Not to mention that in Halo 3 beta the radar was nowhere near an enemy indicator due to the many levels of the maps. In the beach one (cant remember the name) you would know someone was in your base but they could be on any of one of 3 levels. Added a really nice layer of strategy.

Theres also the awesome tactic i learned by first becoming a victim. Where one enemy moves a lot and another waits completely still by the doorway. you go to attack the movement and get completely ambushed.

The radar adds far more strategy than it removes.

In any case, if it's anything like Halo 2 there'll be a radar-less playlist for people like Stroker who want to run around unchallenged.

It's hardly about 'running around unchallenged'. It's about being able to apply stealth and a bit of tactical depth the way you would in Rainbow Six or something.

Seriously, I don't get it - you can see where you're being attacked from at every single momen even if there's a wall in the way. Again, if you can tell someone's position regadless of obstructions, that's practically a wallhack.

"But if you stand still it stops tracking you!!! if you crouch, they can't track you, either! OMGGSADFHG!!!"

Yeah, see how long you survive standing still outside of the enemy base. You still have to walk there to get there in the first place so even if you disappear from radar any decent player should know exactly where you are. Of course, you could:

Try crouching.

But that's just fixing one shitty mechanic with another.

Jesus Christ, you criticise one aspect of the game's design and immediately the Halo Defense Squad leaps to its defence - OMG HALO IS TEH FLAWLESS.

I think it's just that a lot of people actually like that game mechanic, myself included. On a related note, I'm rather glad that you can now toggle crouch, so remaining undetected should prove to be less of a hassle.

I didn't notice. That's a good addition. Holding the thumbstick in for any length of time while shuffling about was always kinda awkward.

Dont start being unreasonable Stroker. its not about blindly defending Halo, its about disagreeing with your point.

The radar adds absolutely tonnes of tactics. It allows you tyo lure the enemy into a trap. It allows you to lure them into a false sense of security.

I have videos of me on halo 3 sitting outside a competent enemies base for a good 5 or 6 minutes, just waiting for the right time and point of entry. Its perfectly possible to manipulate the radar into making the enemy think they are safe.

I tend to run until I see a blip on my radar, indicating I am in range, then 'go silent'. In my team (me, krypt, yaw, wolf, tyler) i am the resident sneaker. i use the radar to my advantage massively. It adds so much that makes Halo better than other games.

Taking the radar off is ALSO awesome, its just a ery different type of game dynamic. is till love it, but there is room for both. the radar is only a wallhack to people who dont play the game in a cerebral manner. Quite often if i appear on your radar in an objective based game its cos I WANT you to know I am there (usually cos Tyler will be watching the nearest doorway with a sniper rifle)

Weeeeeeeeeeeell, I wasn't being entirely serious with my post. Maybe a wink smiley would have helped.

Personally, I reckon just being able to barge into someone's base (I only really like to play objective games) from any angle you want is overkill. Getting a flag or something from a Coag base avec le radar is far more satisfying and requires more thought.

Absolutely. As you learn Halo you go through a lifecycle with the radar: First I didn't use it as I wasn't used to it, then I started using it to help me identify others, then I actually started considering how others can see me and finally how it can be used tactically.

Whenever you see pro guides, and the likes, to Halo, they very rarely mention the radar. A big part of Halo multiplayer is how you control your own appearance on radar and using it to control others.

It adds to the strategy massively.

I think you're mistakenly presuming that I want the radar out because I doin't use it. This is incorrect. I use the radar constantly. On certain maps I can play almost by radar alone if the opponents are pissing about. It's the best tool you have, and I live or die by it.

That's why I want it gone.

In other games, I have to stick my head up, look around, think about how the opposition team has been playing and know the map to figure out where my opponents are likely to attack from. In Halo, I just pick a good, flexible spot and wait for the red dots. As soon as a dot appears, I know exactly where they are - let's be honest, we all do. Total shite.

Chief and Aribter side by side? Ooh, i'm feeling excitement.

Me too, even though I hated playing as him. Looks like the single-player is shaping up to be quite the experience!

As for the radar, Stroker, jesus, you'll be complaining about the Ki-meter in Tenchu next :)

I'm being honest. We all DON'T

In any other game you can run around how you please so long as you are out of line of sight. In Halo you have to choose your movements much more carefully. i'm always aware of how I approach beyond line of sight. I'll sometime run within radar range if I see an opponent fighting, cos i figure they wont be checking their radar in that situation. It adds so many more tactics

They were going to let you drive them but I think they ran out of time. I can't remember if it actually lets you get in them but there was definitely a "Hold X to drive" message if you got one in multiplayer.

Yeah, I heard that too I think. And by multiplayer I assume you mean co-op? I'd have to check since it's a while since I whacked out 2P co-op, but are you sure you're not getting it mistaken with the "Hold X to operate turret" message? I certainly can't remember it being that heavily implied that the ability to drive the vehicle was dropped at the last second.

the motion tracker adds an extra tactical level. it really is that simple. i don't see how anyone can argue it.

besides, if you really don't like it. switch the fucker off!

Nah, on a modded Xbox you can import pretty much everything from the campaign into multiplayer.

You can even ride in those flying Prophet chairs!

[edit]

I'm pretty sure you can actually ride in it now, I'm sure I remember doing it.

For me and my circle of friends, the thing that will make or break Halo 3 multiplayer will be public custom games.

i'm pretty sure they confirmed it already somewhere.

if it's just matchmaking i can see it becoming exactly as frustrating as Halo 2, only able to play the gametypes and maps that Bungie want you to.

And of course you'll be able to turn off the motion tracker if you want.

I'm with you. There were cusom games in the beta and they were amazing. the level of customisation is tsunning.

It's obviously not going to be just matchmaking. Even in you weren't aware of the custom game exploit in the beta, why would you possibly presume that they'd drop a major feature of Halo 2? And how, if for some insane reason they did drop custom games, would Halo 3 become "exactly as frustrating as Halo 2", a game that did have custom games? Surely by that logic it would be more frustrating?
