Yep, the latter. It's the lack of any lunge thats broken it for me. It doesn't need to be like Halo 2 but there does need to be some sort of forward motion. Standing millimeters from an enemy and hitting melee and it having no effect is comedic, and wrong.

This too. The melee is like the Shotgun from Halo 2 - broken for us, overpowered for Americans. Classic scenario is two players fighting with close range weapons. You get the jump on the other player so you're already shooting first, shield pops, both head straight on towards each other for the killer blow, and you always die.

It wasn't such a bad problem in Halo 2 with the shotgun because whenever you saw somebody with it you just kept your distance at all costs. With melee it's different. I've stopped bothering engaging in close range combat and thus it's cutting out a massive portion of my game.

Melee to head hasn't been knocking people out in one either.

Melee is a defining feature of Halo. It needs sorting out.

It's so annoying as well, the amount of times I've gone to melee someone and my character has done the animation, and you even hear the 'thunk' sound effect a good 1/2 second before the other player, only to then end up dead. Then I get teabagged and told I suck...soul destroying. :(

Strange, i've found it works better for me than the Halo 2 melee. I never got used to that lunge thing they had and usually got battered after i was sure i'd landed mine first.

I think the melle is better than 2's in theory, but the latency seems even more pronounced with it now.

I'm finding it just as uinfuriating as halo 2 was in matchmaking. i find customs heavenly but playing against yanmks is horrible. Been playing team slayer all morning and despite finishing with an average of +10 in most games i still feel horribly bullshitted most of the time.

The network code really is piss poor at the moment, I used to really enjoy 6 vs 6 when it was in the halo2 matchmaking, but in this beta I avoid it like the plague cos it's just a laggy mess. Even 4 vs 4 at times is very poor. I would have hoped that by the time halo 3 came out peoples average broadband connection would make the experience much more pleasant, but it isn't at this time + their net code seems to have taken a step backwards also. <_<

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. With the lunge toned down you have to be more precise with your melee's, but with the amount of latency at times it's very hard to judge.

Is there a way (like holding back on halo 2) in which you check who has host ?- or are you going by the fact the game seems better your end?

Not as far as I know, you can just tell when the host is on this side of the Atlantic by playing the game.

this ends tonight doesnt it?

Nope.

I completely disagree about the networking code being worse than in Halo 2 though, it seems a lot fairer now, even when playing against americans. I'm sure the toning down of the PP is a big part of that too.

In slayer games you're pretty evenly matched against americans (unless it's a really bad connection), the only real problems can occur in the objective games when you have to get up close to them allowing their quicker beatdowns to be more effective.

Have you saved any of those games so you can see how the host 360's view of it was compared with how you felt it all happened?

how do you do that then?

with the films i've saved i've only ever been able to watch the action from my own viewpoint. i'm sure they'll be putting a lot more stuff in for the final release, like the freeze frame action and movable camera that was shown in the last vidoc.

oo. i'll do that then. should be interesting to see the difference.

The difference between the fun i was having in custom games with mates though, and playing matchmaking on my own today was vast. Latency, quitters, rude bastards and boring repeat gametypes FTFL!

The replay you save is using data from the hosts Xbox, not yours.

Apparently.

so what will that show, his melee connecting more obviously before yours or something?

Complete opposite experience for me. The network code from my perspective is much better than it was in Halo 2. Even playing against Americans is tolerable now (only in terms of latency). I'm sure the majority would agree that it has been improved in general.

I had a pretty horrific experience to begin with, but it has improved as the Beta has progressed.

However, I can't see any noticeable improvement over Halo 2 in any particular aspects. More so, people who lag out (like me, for the first ten matches) have a distinct advantage in that no one can hit him/her because they're lagging all over the place.

Saying that, playing against Americans has improved. I wonder if they changed the 'Let's give the host to the American regardless' rule that plagued Halo 2.

Well living in Aus I seem to be the only person who has yellow bars during games so I'm always trying to pre-empt melee - works 50% of the time.

But the delay gets me killed a lot <_<

I was getting a bit of that also. I've found that filtering by connection seems to fix the problem though.

I'm don't think it does. Robojeebus deliberately saved a really laggy game to see what thje lag looked like from the hosts point of view, but from what he could tell he was given the view as he had seen it during the game. It was a rockets game, so basically he got the same animation anomalies where you shoot the rocket and you see the rocket launcher do it's animation and then the rocket takes a moment to actually appear etc...

You would imagine so. I've yet to remember to save a game where i have a clear idea of an incident i felt cheated on - and remember to watch what the host 360 decided happened from my point of view. It's also a pain in the arse if you want to see something right at the end of the match as you have to sit through it all.

That's contrary to what i gathered from the update on how this is meant to work - it was most definitely data from the hosts xbox that the movie is meant to show, and that shouldn't reflect any lag. Odd

Now I've posted that I can't actually find Jeebus's post about it on Mookismo but I'm convinced I read it <_<
