Of course there is. Obviously, better players should still win, but the idea of n00b-friendliness is to make it fun for everyone, whether they're winning or losing. The problem with Halo (and most online FPSs) is that losing isn't usually much fun and you don't learn anything from it, thus the incentive to become better is not very strong. If someone snipes you from the other side of the map, you don't learn how to snipe. If someone finds a better weapon than yours, you don't learn where to find it. Getting better at Halo certainly is a learning process, but it's done in spite of the competition, rather than through it.

It would, however, take drastic changes to fix the issue. Making all walls transparent, removing weapon pick-ups entirely and forcing everyone to use the same set, or the total removal of any one-hit-kill attacks, are three such ideas, although these are pretty extreme.

What do you think they can do to make it fun for everyone considering that I can have fun even if I'm not on the winning team or at the top of the post match scoring table ? Not every noob will have the same experience depending on there level of 'noobiness' Part of being a noob will mean you will get owned very quickly in Halo (or any game for that matter). Perhaps there could be a handicap system whereby a noob could take more damage but I'm not sure how they will be able to implement this as the game will not be able to distinguish from a Halo veteran or a brand new player and if they where the former that would make it unfair.

I'd like to think that most people that were new to Halo would not jump into matchmaking unless they wanted to learn things the harder way. The easier way to learn the basic mechanics of Halo will be able to play the campaign mode, then to learn weapon placement and maps etc, start a custom game with friends and also review your performance with the playback mode which will all be available in the full game. Admittedly the beta is pretty hardcore but thats to be expected.

Well, most of that would have occured to me anyway, but I'd still have to find where the shotgun is for instance - I don't learn that from being shot with one.

You could just ask your team-mates. :(

If your not wanting to get noobed constantly I recommend playing the 'training' sections of the playlists when the game finally gets a release. Its not to say people still won't be out to win but whenever I've used it in Halo2 its usually not as win-driven as the Rank modes. This is what I did anyhow.

Weird, I'm finding it far more accessable than Halo 2 was, and an awful lot of fun too!

In terms of the way the maps are designed they are pretty straight forward to learn, the weapon balance and finding your range with particular weapons is good but the overall combat itself has a pretty steep learning curve.

I didn't find that the complete answer, although it's a start. To be honest, the only way to get properly decent is to pair up with someone skilled, or join a clan, and learn from them. After you reach a certain proficiency in terms of accuracy and positioning, you need to learn the maps and how to 'use' them during different game types, particularly in team games (not many people care about single DM in Halo, anyway - it's all about skirmishes and BTB).

Can you blame the game for not making it even remotely clear that there are settings to adjust? Where are these mythical sensitivity settings?

When you start the beta and are in a lobby, press start, and then press right on the left-thumbstick to access the settings menu.

I have my sensitivity on 7.

Anyone done any custard (custom) games yet. Can't see the wood from the trees on the bungie forum but there appears to be quite a few real looking vids on YT.

Custom games aren't available in the beta! However, due to some bug, it is possible to access the settings for custom games where you can tweak things like player gravity, motion tracker range and things like that. I believe it was mentioned some time last week.

The next best thing is to get 12 players in a party and then just do BTB Training/Skirmish/Slayer.

Come on Sean, stop talking shit! Press 'start', press 'right' to go to the settings tab.

No, I'm never playing the beta again. In fact I might well delete it from my hard drive, that'll teach Bungie!

Custom games have been accessed now, beyond just the settings:

Be honest, you're doing this on purpose, aren't you?

No, I'm at work, it's just I saw a thing on screen that said "press A" and when I did I went to a screen that gave no explanation as to what it did, but there was a pretty picture of a spartan, in blue, and some empty boxes or the other.
