Microsoft today announced the return of the Crystal Xbox® across Europe. Originally issued as a limited edition in March 2004, the "crystal clear" console proved hugely popular with gamers and style gurus, winning praise and accolades from gamers and media alike. Available across Europe from 8th October, the "crystal clear" console comes with a crystal controller and will retail for €149/£99 (SRP). This time around gamers can also buy additional single crystal controllers for €39.99/£24.99 each

The rest of the press release is just a line of crap about Microsoft and it's Christmas line-up.

This is certainly good news. I think I'll hold out on getting a new machine until the Crystal Xbox's are widespread; there's little doubting they're far, far sleeker looking than the ugly dark green ones.

One thing's not entirely clear - whether the return of the Crystal Xbox will make it a permanent feature of the Xbox hardware line-up, or whether it's just another attempt to extend the lifespan of the format itself, or perhaps its an attempt to distract some attention from Sony's PStwo announcements of late. So it's not clear-cut whether you'll be able to buy the damn things for the forseeable future or just for another shorter time-span.

I've heard that the Crystal Xboxes will now be a long-term thing.

It would also explain the recent shortages of black Xboxes that a lot of places have been having - apparently M$ haven't been supplying any more of the black Xboxes at all, which would make sense if they're going to replace them all with Crystal ones in the near future.

That's what we were told at work the other day. No X box sales for a couple of weeks, seeing as we sold the last one on friday.

I've also heard an extremely vague rumour about the PS2 (something to do with black ones being discontinued), but I'm not at all convinced about that.

Nice. I was going to finally get an Xbox and now it doesn't have to be quite so ugly.

If everything's OK at your end, I'll be contacting you about a premodded crystal XBox with a 160Gb drive for me in about a month, Yod@ ;) (I PMd you a couple of weeks back.)

Those blue Xecuter Leds flashing through the transparant casing would be

How man Blue LEDs could the xbox power? Could you just fill it up totally so It was just like a big crazy glowing blue box?

Actually, I'm not sure - I don't know how much power the Xbox/DVD/HD draws from the PSU. I don't think I'd be comfortable having more than about 15-20 LEDs in it at the most.

We bought an X Box the other day and the Game manager did state categorically that crystal was going to be the new standard console with black (really, it's green? :D ) being discontinued and the same for the silver PS2. We bought the black one but he wrote on the receipt that if we kept it pristine we could exchange it for a crystal one in a few weeks when they arrived. :D
