I Listen To The Best Music

Glad you like it. The Tool connection is hard to describe and probably my own delusion anyway, but in case it isn't I'll give it a go. Basically, while both bands are very obviously from different genres and generally sound nothing a like, they are both placed on the "psychedelic" fringe of their genres and whether either really should be described this way, it is an example of how, in my opinion, both are basically attempting to communicate the same message and an appreciation of one should therefore lead to an appreciation of the other. Hopefully that didn’t sound too gay.

I understand what you are getting at there. And the song structures are kind of similar in a non-standard way.

Classic indie!

Have you heard The Eels' Novocaine For The Soul? It was one of the five best singles of the 90s, so get that if you missed out at the time.

Agreed. Beautiful track. I love the video to Last Stop: This Town too.

I'll add a few more:

Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode (best song ever made)

Say Hello Wave Goodbye - Soft Cell

Swallowed - Bush

I just bought Before and After Science by Brian Eno.

It's great.

(But Phil Collins' on it).

I'm buying up his entire back catalogue at the moment.

An excellent and overlooked Eno 'pop' album is Wrong Way Up with John Cale. Some beautiful songs on there, particularly Spinning Away. Slightly more out there but containing possibly my fave song EVA (Baby's on Fire) is Here Come the Warm Jets.

That's what I'm doing also (the joy of CD re-issues).

Yes, Baby's on fire is wonderful.

And don't get me started on John Cale. Music for a new Society is still the saddest, scariest record ever made. I almost can't listen to it. (I keep a) Close Watch, brrrrrrr.

Heidi, just remembered you're a big John Cale fan... I picked up the Modern Lovers over the weekend (an album produced by John Cale) and it's fantastic. Also, if you have Winamp you can get an entire concert performance of Songs for Drella if you go to the videos section and look for Lou Reed.

Oh yes, he's also a terrific producer. Bar the obvious (Smith's Horses, Stooges, some Nico), you should try Element of Crime's first album (Try to be Mensch), an excellent german band - they sang in english at that time.

The Modern Lovers is wonderful indeed.

About Songs for Drella, I have the movie taped somewhere. I will have a look.

I'm not convinced by his last album, but everyone must listen to Fear, Music for A New Society, Paris 1919 and Words for the dying (the latter being maybe a bit too "arty"...).

Hmm, I might have this at home somewhere, is this the one with an orchestral track which he talks over as if he's a camera director?  Might be another album actually.

Well, it's the one which contains some adaptations of one of your poet - Dylan Thomas, thanks Google - ahem, poetry, and yes very orchestral.

But I'm so lazy I didn't listen to my vinyl since a long time, so for your question, I can't answer.

Produced by Eno, Google reminded me.

But really : Music for a New Society. I should start a thread about that.
