nice. btw where did you get it from? I don't 'buy' much music y'see but wanted some of their stuff and don't know where to look. bit of a music-buying noob am I...

possibly-uninteresting fact: a girl on my uni course is going out with russell the guitarist in BP, and she does all the artwork for their releases.

Erm. I think it was a virgin megastore.

'Music has the right to children' will change your life.

Also try 'Kid A' by Radiohead. Download 'How to Disappear Completely' as a taster.

I think he said he wanted something aggressive, yet gorgeous. That album is just a stinking pile of shit.

My advice? Try the new Dizzee Rascal album. It's wicked good.

well you sound like you need Godspeed you Black Emporer.

They are mind-blowingly epic and beautifully gorgeous.

download Storm, Sleep and the first track off Slow Riot for new zero kanada (whatever its called). definately my 3rd fav band at the moment (behind tool and radiohead).

oh, and ignore the debaser. both Kid A and music has the right to children are awesome albums, they just don't click with some people. take a few listens (as do godspeed).

I met a girl who likes indie, can you tell me some bands to name drop so she does naughty stuff with my spam-dagger?

Check out Amazon's genre list thingy, it's always good for starters. And then check the 'customers who bought this also bought...' on a specific album page. It's like a never-ending list of recommendations.

If you want to win brownie points you could namecheck indie that was around in the Britpop era: tell her how Blur's Parklife is your favourite Indie album, and that you used to listen to Kula Shaker, Elastica, Ash ('1977'), Cast (download 'Walk Away' and say it's your favourite song :(), Bush, Echobelly, Shamen, Republica, The Cure, Shed Seven, Bluetones, REM (well, not indie, but Automatic for the People was definitive), Portishead, Pulp, Ocean Colour Scene, Oasis ('Definitely Maybe' really was the highpoint), Skunk Anansie, David McAlmont and Bernard Butler (download 'Yes', it's an amazing song), Black Grape, Bis, Suede, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Super Furry Animals, Supergrass, hell, even Beautiful South or Depeche Mode! And even though it isn't indie, play More Than Words by Extreme to her.

I'm sure a lot of those above would be completely obvious, or you've heard of them :D

Marillion: Brave

One of the most emotional albums of the past 20 yrs. It's basically a concept album, which tries to re-trace the steps of a real life event. A girl was found on the Severn Bridge, unable to speak, and in a total state of shock. The lead singer tried to piece together the history of how she could end up in such a situation.

An extremely powerful album, which represents the finest work from one of the best bands of our time. Criminaly ignored by the masses of course. Their new one, "Marbles" aint bad either, but I'd really try Brave if your looking for music that means something.

Why?

I don't know.

Heard "something"* in the pub on friday... Carl Wayne died on the 31st august... flowers in the rain...

*obviously Roy Wood in style, but I couldn't tell you what it was called. Something about a girl, in the city, on friday nights or something...

I was only kidding. She can shove her indie up her arse! It's proper bent music, like.

I need to get some stuff by the move/wizzard/elo

Basically anything with carl wayne / roy wood

Is it ELO that did Mr.Bluesky? They played that after everybody had finished 'moshing' to some Slayer nonsense at a club I was at last weekend and I thought to myself "Now this is some proper music" and had a little dance to it.

Sun is shinin' in the sky

There ain't a cloud in sight

It's stopped rainin' everybody's in a play

And don't you know

It's a beautiful new day hey,hey

Runnin' down the avenue

See how the sun shines brightly in the city

On the streets where once was pity

Mister blue sky is living here today hey, hey

Mister blue sky please tell us why

You had to hide away for so long

Where did we go wrong?

Hey you with the pretty face

Welcome to the human race

A celebration, mister blue sky's up there waitin'

And today is the day we've waited for

Hey there mister blue

We're so pleased to be with you

Look around see what you do

Ev'rybody smiles at you

Mister blue sky, mister blue sky

Mister blue sky

Mister blue, you did it right

But soon comes mister night creepin' over

Now his hand is on your shoulder

Never mind I'll remember you this

I'll remember you this way

Mister blue sky please tell us why

You had to hide away for so long

Where did we go wrong?

Hey there mister blue

We're so pleased to be with you

Look around see what you do

Ev'rybody smiles at you

Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba

Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba

I'm slowly but surely working through the suggestions here guys. Thanks.

Already a mini fan of Elliot Smith, tried the meutral milk hotel (can't quite see the Tool connection yet, but I certainly like it) Got some boards of Canada stuff to listen to too.

I'm not a music snob, so I don't care about the Genre/fashionability of the bands.

Thanks again so far

Glad you like it. The Tool connection is hard to describe and probably my own delusion anyway, but in case it isn't I'll give it a go. Basically, while both bands are very obviously from different genres and generally sound nothing a like, they are both placed on the "psychedelic" fringe of their genres and whether either really should be described this way, it is an example of how, in my opinion, both are basically attempting to communicate the same message and an appreciation of one should therefore lead to an appreciation of the other. Hopefully that didn’t sound too gay.
