So Whos's Playing Fable?

After around ten hours play (but probabaly not getting anywhere near ten hours into it, if you see what I mean) over three days, I've developed a bit of a love/hate relationship with it. It's easily one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen and gives you far more freedom over your character than anything I've played before. You really do find yourself stopping just to admire the scenery and to watch the inhabitants of the little villages going about their day. Aside from the invisible walls the whole world is so rich and believable.

So far my favourite "little touch" is back when you're a little 'un, if you grass up the cheating husband to his wife (better yet accept his bribe, then grass him up) and then go back to where he was having an affair he's now having a full-blown very stereotypical row with his wife, her screaming things like "I bet she's younger, in't she? So, go on then, where did you pick up the little tart?" I can't remember the last time I saw attention to detail like that and it's all so British.

On the downside the things that's annoyed me most has been the combat system. It just seems like they've made a more fiddly version of KOTOR's system, added a poorly implemented version of Zelda's Z targeting system, where you can't see who you're locked onto in a crowd, leading you to fry innocent tradesmen even though you're trying to play good; and taken out the pause feature, making it needlessly frantic... Have most people managed to get used to it or is it just me?

You don't need to lock on to an enemy to hit them with melee or ranged attacks, you can swing a sword or use some magic around NPCs and it won't hurt them as long as your not holding L.

Woah, this game is taking some stick.

Only picked it up yesterday and have spent around 4 hours playing it. I've got side-tracked a fair bit so I've only done a few quests.

It kind of reminds me of Vice City crossed with PSO crossed with KOTOR.

I'm actually really enjoying my time playing it, despite it's imperfections, and found myself thinking about it whilst in the boozer watching England...and games that make me think of them when I'm not playing them are usually the good ones.

I try to avoid the hype on games these days. This means I can simply enjoy them for what they are. Fable's a very nice game IMO and is one of them that makes you think about the future possibilities of gaming.

What is everyones favourite Will power thing?

Excluding Emflame and the lightning thing, which I both have already.

Slow time, I guess. Extremely useful against those giant rock trolls. And it looks cool too. :)

Anyway, I've almost completed the main quest, and I've grown horns. My eyes aren't eyes anymore, just 2 black holes, and I'm still full of scars and tattoos. Attractivenss -100, scariness +100. :)

don't spell any naughty words.

ha ha ha. I did that first of all just to see what would happen.

i've only just released that you can hit the boulders back at the troll like things with your sword.

and i've been playing for 11 hours! games that do that make me smile.

Yeah I know but I find it too hard to realistically pull off in a crowded battle. Is that something that should come with practice, or what?

COMBAT TIPS PLEASE.

Use the block button. I'm not being facetious! I actually didn't realise it was there until about 3 hours in. It helps.

Don't always use the lock on. In fights with more than one opponent, it's better not to, as you can hit more than one person at the same time, and change attack direction quicker.

Don't forget to use your B button move, and I find pressing left or right whilst doing is more effective. Which is a big sweeping move, rather than an attack directed towards one opponent (which often misses).

If you're having trouble with crowds, get the surround flame magic spell. It get's everyone the fuck away from you and gives you a bit of a breather. I'm not sure of it's name, but there's animations before you upgrade, and you'll recognise the one I mean.

And if there's a group of enemies which you think you might not be able to handle all at once, try to draw one of two out by using the lightning spell, of a crossbow shot, etc. And if in doubt, leg it.

I just tried that. Great fun.

Thanks dangerboy I didn't know about the sweeping B move, which came in very useful in the Hobbes cave. I'll try getting the surround flame spell once I've got enough xp too because at the moment I'm having to spend it all on making my character strong enough to carry his new weapon. :(

So it's like Enflame but less damage? Surely that means it's not that good?

No, it's still very useful if you're being surrounded, as you can just push everyone miles away.

Whereas enflame takes about a second to use (cos he needs to throw it on the floor), so you can still get hit. Force Push is instant.

Just completed it.

It took me back to the menu screen after the credits :( can't you carry on playing?

Me too. Quite a poor ending and story IMO. Loved the art & freedom but never really felt immersed within the world. All the cut-scenes were a bit lacking and whilst the voices were charming in some instances many were disappointing. Doesn't seem much to do after completion either.

Still, one of the best games this year for me, mostly for what it does thats new rather than producing a really well refined RPG adventure.

I'm stuck on the Knothole Glade siege mission. I'm getting really annoyed now. Each time I try it I end up accidently hitting allies, getting attacked by them as well as the bandits, bandits run through to the prisoner, who then casually strolls out of the camp which messes up the mission. It's absurd that you can't stop him from just walking out without killing him and failing.

Just done the arena. Wow. Maybe it;s just me but I approach boss battles expecting to lose a couple of times, but I got through stage after stage after stage .. after 45 mins I was like "fuck, i'm going to cry if I have to do all this again". In the end took me 1 hour, but I did it first time. In my pants. Boasts rule!

I must say, the more I play this game the more I love it. I love that it is different from the Japanease type RPGs. For me, the story is great, I couldn't believe it when my sister turned up as a blind sorceress last night. It seems to flow so well as a game without being over-complicated. It might be RPG-lite, buts perfect for my game playing tastes.

This is keeping me from Rome Total War and Psi Ops.

I've said this before and then regretted it or changed my mind, but here I go anyway -

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES I HAVE EVER PLAYED!!!!!

Click For Spoiler
First of all, don't use the left trigger to lock targets when there are allies around. That goes for any situation like that. The people you're supposed to kill will already be highlighted red, so just use X and B.

Next, learn the slow time spell. Then when the gate opens, start making your way into the bandit camp, slowing time and killing the bandits in threes. Keep heading towards the guy that you spoke to at the start of the quest, slowing time and killing each wave of Bandits. Voila. Job's a good 'un.

I'm an hour or so in, having done 2 post-training missions. It's quite fun so far.

Two questions though:

1) Can you re-map the d-pad short cuts? I see you can re-map the R_trigger + d-pad buttons, but cannot find a way for the normal ones. One of the buttons is permenantly assigned to "fart" which is a waste! The manual doesn't seem to answer this,

2) Does all the snarling, flirting, farting stuff actually affect the game in any real way? Or is it just eye candy / molyneux-time wasting stuff?

ta :)
