So Whos's Playing Fable?

Been hearing that the game is very linear and the areas are really small. Is this just the begginging of the game or is this all the way through? I was expecting big landscapes to explore but it dosen't seem to be the case

If somebody has written an engine and game system capable of handling large, freely explorable areas, the chances of them hiding this wonderful feature until you are hours and hours into the game, and 'fooling' you with small, restricted play areas for the first day of play are close to zero.

I'd not be so sure, FF games / Zelda games hide the more freeform bits until you've gotten used to the game.

However, this is Molyneaux.

1. It's not Morrowind

2. It's not as world-changing as Moloononeonsononeononeoufhzzzuex wants you to think

I've been playing it for about five hours now (and I'm already 35 in the game) and I'm having fun. It's simple, easy to pick up and satisfying to see my quick transition from bright eyed little boy to pale skinned, scarred evil shit-twat of doom. Plus I have a massive axe.

It'll get a panning from most people simply because it isn't what was promised, but overlooking that there is a fun game to be had. Plus I punched a child, which made me spit out my coffee. Always a good reaction.

It's lovely - been playing it for about 4 hours.

It has *character*, even if the plot is hokum (which it probably is, I've not really seen much of it), and is full of nice touches.

I'm not sure what Dave was smoking when he mentioned 4/10, but...

Not that into it so far - just leaving the guild for the first time. But what's with the shit save system? I did some wandering around, some training. Spoke to everyone I could. Chose to save the game. went back to it later on and was plonked back right near the start. Shite.

As I mentioned on the 1st page of this topic, there are 2 types of saves - Hero Save (saves your characters stats, experiance and items) and World Save (everything). The World Save isn't available until you've finished all your training and 'graduated' from the hero guild.

Stupid? Yes.

Thankfully once thats done you can save at any time.

Egghead wrote on page one...

Boring quest. And what is the point of a quest when you can't fail? In FF games i accept it but in a game like Fable.. neh.

Pardon?

Would you like to explain that?

Saving when your in the middle of a quest isn't possible. Stupid.

Good game balancing decision.

10 Enemy's at 1 time is nothing special.

Not a unique selling point.

Bad sound acting (damn.. Slooooooooooow...)

Wrong. You're welcome to try and name a recent game that does it better.

Useless interaction system. Why? You don't need it.

It's a roleplaying game. And its an attempt to build some life into your character. They've even attempted to make it worth your while doing so.

AND DAMN... THE GUY NEEDS TO STOP SAYING I'M LOW ON AMMO/MANA OR WHEN I HAVE A NEW QUEST. I KNOW! Really, it is so frustrating.

Yes. I hope he stops at some point.

I didn't expect much from Fable and what i got is just a Kingdom Hearts. It's called RPG but basicly it's just a freaking Button Basher with a story. A bad story that is.

You have a strange view of what an RPG is if you don't understand why there's a "useless interaction system". It's far more of an RPG than FFantasy is.

And finally...

Edit : Going back to a guild for missions. Upgrading your skills in the guild. Shooting birds in the guild. A+ for every training you complete in the guild etc. Fuck freedom. Hype rules!

So you're judging how the game stands primarily by the tutorial?!

It's going to be a long day.

[ roll on jade empire too, but only because I'm a massive bioware fan ]

It's more combat based than I perhaps expected (the only encounter to stick in my mind so far would be

the earth troll at the end of the "escort idiotic merchants" quest
which, to be fair, I thought was quite pretty

) but then I don't expect much from my console role playing games.

The combat has potential (combinations of magic and melee or something), but I'm not far enough in to be definite about that.

Hmm. I'm not so sure. I wasn't really expecting anything from this game. But all I've got is lots of really drawn-out button-bashing-in-a-bad-way combat (like, not knowing who your character is targeting because he's wading knee deep in an enemy who may be dead, but who may actually just be unconscious, but either way is obscuring the view of your character and his facing). It's just getting repetitive after about four hours; go to the guild, pick up a quest, follow the icons, hit stuff. Hit stuff again. Hit stuff again. Which might be fine if the hitting bit was fun, but I don't think it is.

And I don't think it's balanced very well. Like, there's a bit where you've got a choice of paying 400 gold, or fighting an entire bandit camp. I chose to take on the bandit camp, munching my way through all my potions (because of the targeting problems above) till I'd eventually killed every last one of them (which took a fair amount of time, because there were lots). And in return I got nothing. They didn't leave a single item of loot. Which is poor because what did they do with all the other 400 golds that they'd been collecting?; and because it doesn't feel like a fair return on my decision to take a risk on beating them all.

And the menu systems are pretty horrible. And it's not that the game doesn't feature large areas; it's that almost all the environments are basically an enclosed path, which, combined with the fairly frequent load times makes it feel pretty claustrophobic.

I realise I'm being negative again, but partly I'd like someone to explain what I'm missing. I have it on good authority from somone who's finished the game, whose opinion I respect, that it's a pretty good game. But so far I've seen no evidence of that.

You're playing, Roadkill, right?

Or you're going by screenshots and second hand comment?

There's one gaping invisible wall apparent in the first section (I don't count low fences - since low fences are insurmountable walls in 99.9% of action RPGs) where you're looking out over a small lake/pond. It's a shame you can't wade in up to your chest (as you can elsewhere) - but then we'd no doubt be complaining that our character doesn't start to swim...

Sudeki bored me senseless within the first generic opening cutscene. If that helps?

That sounds remarkably like my mate regarding my views on comics (putting me in Egghead's position).

Outsiders views can be just as, if not more, valid to a given item largely because they aren't caught up in the hype machine/who made it nonsense that comes in both comics and games lands.

Yes - but at least Egghead's actually played the darn thing, which means he's got a viewpoint based on something other than:

"If Molyeneux hadn't been involved and it wasn't on Console Y then..."

Taurus: I'll agree the fight was tedious in the extreme. I ran round in circles and occasionally darted in to hit it with a sword.

I appreciated it more because of the way it

erupted from the ground relatively unexpectedly/ was animated
. But then, I won't have played as many games as you in the last x years :D and so am probably easier to please!

I'm also, perhaps, comparing it to Kingdom Heart's scary camera combat issues, which I haven't found as bad.

Though I miss an easy first person viewpoint, and find the default camera just too close to the back of my character's head.

Had this been exactly the same title on PS2 you'd all be saying "what utter rubbish, those graphical glitches are unforgivable in a game of this profile"

"Regardless of technical issues, some of this game is simply beautiful to look at, on a few occasions I've gone "woah!" because its lush as fuck."

We've actually stopped the game and gathered everyone round to look at a specific scene a few times, just because its gorgeous. Somewhere in the woods bit with the water, and the backgrounds and the lighting, eeek. Lovely.

Hmm, for the first hour or two, the framerate is really dodgy. But you grow up, and it all looks a buggerload better, your character looks smother, and the framerate is gorgeous.

How inconsistent. =\

Otherwise, the first part of the game was a bit average, but it's getting better now I've started to do missions. :D

its brilliant. It much more zelda than morrowind though, and the atmosphere and graphics are great

If you forget project ego and the silly promises made, than there is a great, though linear rpg to be played

im in six hours and loved every minute so far

Read those quotes again, footle. Not one of them suggests anything more than a generic dungeon crawl.

Really?

Did I forget to put

"TEH BEST GAME EVAR!!!!1"

Sorry, I thought sensible opinions still counted for something, evidently not.

Im actually annoyed im going out tonight because I just want to stay in my room and play. Its rare a game does that.

I don't play any "dungeon" games or any particular style of games, I hate classifying games.

Fable is a role playing game, not an RPG. Its an action/adventure game, its very cool so far.

Seeing as the bandits had a variety of loot stored in pots and chests to the left hand side of the area as you entered it *but off the main path*, including a flame augmentation* worth 1750 gold...

[ I'm assuming here we're talking about the same bandits, but we almost certainly are ].

I'm not especially keen on the menu systems - but I'm keen on the various expressions available. And BlackJack is nice and easy.

Nb. I love the voice acting. It's all about that character thing I mentioned above - they're not all "generic American youth" (a) (B) ©. It isn't attempting to be FFXV and is all the better for it.

And the various stories about the world, as described in the books dotted around the place, are *fun*. Which is something you can't say about any Bioware incidental scrolls, books etc, or Square backstory...

* I think - if it wasn't there then, there's at least 600-700GPs of stuff down there.

Except whilst on a quest.

Which is an interesting solution to the quicksave "problem".
