The Sims 2

Having played the review-copy for a few days now, I have to say that having ambitions (goals that your Sims wants to achieve) and fears (goals they don't want to achieve) really makes this more like a proper game. The animations and interactions between the characters is also great. And I was one of those who never caught on with the original Sims.

Goal : Threesome

Fear : Nakedness

Solution : Blindfold?

Stuff like that?

Kind of. Every sim have always got four ambitions and three fears. Typical ambitions are gaining a skill point in cleaning, kissing a specific sim, getting a specific job, etc. Fears are stuff like being rejected by a specific sim, getting burgled, passing out, etc. Every time you complete an ambition it is replaced by a new one, and you get ambition points. These points can be used to purchase some pretty bizarre items (like a money tree).

That's *far* too subtle for me, and *far* to similar to a typicially poorly balanced resource management game.

Its a bit rich to claim that the poor balancing of the play mechanics is a deliberate satire on American consumerism, when the balancing of real time resource management games is the hardest bit to get right, and which virtually every other similar game fails at.

Maybe. I've found a quote, anyway

One thing that has been kind of ironic about The Sims is that a lot of people play it for a while, like 4 to 6 hours, and they walk away thinking it's very materialistic. But the ones that have played it for 20 hours realise that it's the opposite. If you buy stuff in The Sims - every object has some sort of traits - it can go bad, or break, or need maintenance, need to be watered. If you sit there and build a big mansion that's all full of stuff, without cheating, you realise that all these objects end up sucking up all your time, when all these objects had been promising to save you time. So they are kind of time-bombs in a literal sense. And it's actually kind of a parody of consumerism, in which at some point your stuff takes over your life. But because it's fairly subtle, and you have to play the game for that long - half the players don't even see it's a parody. They think, "oh, it's so consumerist."

I was watching this while my GF was playing it last night. It looks so much better than the original game, and the AI seems to be devloped and matured in a nice way. The ambition points is great, and the facial expressions is some of the best I've seen in a game. The whole package is like a Dollhouse Sim with "real ppl".

What's the minimum spec for the game?

System requirements:

Maxis has released information on the system requirements for "The Sims 2." If you have a T&L (info about what T&L is below) capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM (such as nvidia GeForce 2 or better or ATI Radeon 7000 or better) then you need at least:

600 MHz P3 processor

256 MB RAM if Windows XP

128 MB RAM if Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000

Actually, Wil Wright has buried a point about consumerism a little deeper than that: I read an interview where he spoke about it.

Certainly, on the face of it the goal is to live the American dream: big house, big telly, lots of consumer durables. You work hard to buy all of this stuff, get a maid to help with the cleaning, and you win!

But in fact each labour saving device has a failure mode. You buy all this stuff and then you are in a nightmarish cycle of trying to get it all fixed, and earning money to buy more.

That's *far* too subtle for me, and *far* to similar to a typicially poorly balanced resource management game.

After watching the game while my GF plays it some more I've come to the conclusion that The Sims 2 is not much of a game, more like a Tamagochi with real ppl.

I was amazed to witness the diffrent personalities in the game, the little digital persons really act like real people.

My GF has created a virtual me and a virtual her...almost all the things we do in real life is done in Sims2 as well.

Our virtual selves got children last night, my virtual GF gave birth to two twin girls.

It was kinda scary to watch all the Energy, Fun and Hygiene meter drop at accelerated speed after having the kids...we'll be parents in real life in January so if the Sims 2 simulation is anything to go by I wont be much online.

It was also hilarious to watch the virtual me puke every time I changed diapers on the little ones... I am certain this will be the case come January.

Im always amazed at how much time my GF can put in to it, I just sit there watching thinking there is no real overall point to it. But then I guess you could say the same about every game if you broke it down to the most basic level. Hopefully this one is a bit more goal driven.

The new ageing process is very cool, somehow it helps you get more attached to your sims. They all seem more mortal now than in the original.

This time you can really build the house of your dreams:

Accidents can happen in the game as well:

Is there any way to make the characters feed themselves and go to the toilet automatically? Or turn that stuff off? I tried to play The Sims after I had played Animal Crossing to death, but got so annoyed between having to spend time feeding the character and such, that I never got to see the fun parts (I assume). I almost got him outside the door, but then he had to go to bed.

If some of the more basic tasks could be done automatically or turned off as an option, maybe I could go out on the town or go fishing? (Don`t know if you actually can do those things, since I gave up when my man was having some sort of nervous breakdown, still inside the house).

Guess I missed out on a lot of the game, but it frustrated me too much. It was like the game decided what I should do, not the other way around.

Well, my girls have hogged the computer since yesterday, playing it non-stop. It stutters a lot, at a rate which I would regard as unplayable but they don't mind it at all.

I've got the latest drivers and turned everything to low. This is on a Barton 2600+, Win 98, 512Meg of ram (EDIT: and a Geforce 4). How's it performing for you?

im running on a 900mhz duron, 512 megs of ram, 54 meg geforce 4 460mx and windows xp.

All settings are on low or off and it runs pretty smoothly, doesnt stutter. Although in character creation mode i could have hand drawn everything and it would have been quicker. It was painful creating one character. im guessing as it deforms in real time that this is what causes the problems.

Still gona update my card drivers, see if that speeds things up and well get back to playing it. Ive only just created a person and gave him a bed, do like the new goals ideas and the graphics are very nice. And while the camera is fully adjustable, it never feels like its in the right place, might turn it to sims 1 style cam which is a selectable option.

Worst save system ever. In fact that's not strictly true as it seems to lack any save system of any kind that's useable.

I was playing one of the scenarios and decided to flick the game on to fanny around and see what I could mess with. One of the characters got killed in a fire. So I decided to load up my game "proper" and guess what - you can't.

Despite the fact when you quit without saving - it fucking saves anyway. Only way to start again is to go to C drive and delete the 350 meg!!!! save files. idiots. Why not just have a load game option. How hard can that be?
