Second Sight Impressions

Bastards. I gave this another try yesterday, after giving up after a bunch of guards happened to "know" i was heading to Patient Records early in the game. Second time around, they weren't there. <_<

So, after that, the game improves enormously, and becomes something resembling fun. Once you get Telekenisis (or wootevar it's called)+, you'll be loving it, those who still don't like it.

Oops, the game just stepped back into "mind-numbing tedium" mode. I imagine I'm about 3/4 of the way through the game now, and I really can't play anymore of this repetitive, glitchy game. Any game where 3 enemies respawn DIRECTLY BEHIND ME simply isn't worth my time. Shame, it showed a bit of promise, then pissed it up the wall. Repeatedly. Hey, just like... Timesplitters 2!

I especially love the "6 Months Earlier" bits. It's like they took a look at Freedom Fighters, thought "wow, let's copy that, but rip out the fun, and team management" and thrown in a rubbish engine for the fun of it.

Bum.

I read an article on SS recently that got me excited, yet I hesitate at the thought of the flashbacks. I'm worried that they break the feel of the present narrative. Can anyone comment on this aspect of the game?

The flashback bits play like a retarded Freedom Fighters in places, with rubbish stealth bits in others. That is all.

Been playing this for a few hours now, I really like the visual style and the presentation is top notch, great script and voice acting as well.

It's similar to Beyond Good and Evil in that it's perhaps more of an experience than a game as the story is really one of the most appealing aspects of it. I love exploring the computer systems though; they seem really interactive (esp. the MSNs :)), FRD have also implemented one of the best 3rd person shooting engines ever.

Psi-powers are fun to use but the physics are nowhere near as good as those used in Psi-Ops, they are not as satisfying to use.

A decent title none the less.

That's good to hear, because I read that one of the reasons they even made this game was to show everyone that third person shooting does not have to suck. They built that engine to show a new way in which it can be done. So I read.

Shame it feels retarded, then.

Are you playing the PS2 version?

I find the aiming with the Xbox pad quite good but the dead-zone on a ps2 pad may make it quite cumbersome.

No, XBox. The targeting is inferior to a lot of things. It's just no good. The lock-on seems to prefer locking onto barrels etc. Yes, I know you can change it, but it's incredibly cumbersome.

That's just rubbish. There's a hundred and one games that do this thing 100% better. Like... hmm... Freedom Fighters.

EDIT: Forgot to mention Kill.Switch, which fucking rapes it in terms of third-person shooting.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm erring on the side of "this is one of the most enjoyable games I've played this year."

I love the clean looking style, the music and effects are lovely and crisp in that goldeneye style and personally I'm finding the controls a total breeze (xbox). Good fun story too so I jusy thought I'd bump this thread back up to show my appreciation for this excellent game. Strangely it feels more "goldeneye" than PD or TS2 to me.

I've been playing Second Sight, and it is a bit "meh" to be honest.

Seems like a typical shooter to me. The psychic powers aren't really used that well compared to PsiOps - seems like a direct replacement for guns. And, some bits really require you to just do loads of shooting anyway in order to get through, which devalues the whole "you're vulnerable and hunted but you've got super psychic powers" thing. Ah, just shoot everything, it's easier.

Other gripes:

Can't skip cut scenes, and they are so dull.

Can't invert Y.

Can't save your game - it auto-saves at certain checkpoints but it isn't very reassuring.

The missions are so heavily scripted at times, there's little room for asserting your own style of play.

Powers are disabled randomly - this is a real pain, but at certain points in the game you just won't be allowed use powers like "charm". For no obvious reason, other than the designers felt it might make that bit too easy. It's the psychic equivalent of invisible barriers. Artificial rules that make no sense, either in the real world or in the game world.

Cheesy plot, hammy voices, contrived scenarios.

Infinite spawning bad guys.

Clunky stealth bits.

It really isn't great. If it was 20 quid, I might feel more forgiving.

I would like the shooting, except that I can't invert Y. Unusual considering that FRD usually overload their games with millions of options and leave it up to the player to finish designing the game for them.

I really haven't enjoyed what i've played so far, but to be honest I'm a bit tired of the whole stealth thing right now anyway, I just wanna shoot everything and everyone and that tactic doesnt seem to be getting me anywhere.

Is Psi-ops a bit more of an all out shooter? If so I may grab it...

and me. Fantastically atmospheric, totally engrossing.

What I'm really enjoying is how many posiblities there are for geting around - you can make yourself invisisble to enemies, or possess them and make them shoot each other, or lift them up and fling them over the nearest roof while you hide under a table, or scare them off by moving objects around telekinetically...

After the delights of Psi Ops, I switched off Second Sight after 15 minutes.

Worst voice acting ever. Shit psychic powers system. Dull environment.

No thanks.

Have you ever played House of the dead 2?

I think the cutscenes and voices in second sight are very high quality, but horses for courses eh?

Shame about Y-axis but I'm not an inverter any more so I never noticed. The first few levels are all about the stealth but it shifts more to gunplay later, with stealth as an option.

Here's a big 'FUCK YOU' to people who don't like this game, then.

It has one of the best storylines in any game I've played so far, the best voice acting I've ever heard, and a tight gameplay mechanic that lets you scope out the upcoming area with the 'projection' (and 'possession') ability and remove some of the opposition before you wade in with your sniper rifle.

Well worth the £30 I spent on it. I've had it for four days and I haven't finished it yet, unlike Prince of Persia and Beyond Good and Evil.

And come on, how can anyone dislike the character design, which is full of personality? And this is from someone who was easily bored by Timesplitters 2.

Pah! Haters beware! I hunt you down like the dogs you are!*

I did it in 10:01 on normal, two good days of gaming there. There's a lot of scope for score attack here; the game gives you a comprehensive stat breakdown from the menu screen for accuracy, time, stealth etc and you can attempt the firing range games without any hassle.

Staplehead I agree with what you said; the gameplay mechanic reminded me of prince of persia in reverse. Instead of rewinding when you make a mistake, here you look ahead so that you don't make a mistake.
