'official Outrun 2 Thread'

I played B3 this morning and thought FAST!

Then I played OutRun2 for the afternoon and thought FASTER!

Going back to B3 it was initially like treacle.

I've re-adjusted but it was weird as I expected the sense of speed to be more in B3. Anyone else find this? or the opposite? Also PGR2 was impossible to play. I logged into LIVE and after 1 race gave up as it took soooo much effort to get going. I love PGR2 aswell.

Mixing up 3 COMPLETELY different racing games in one day is not good/easy. My head hurts...

To say that Burnout 3 is more graphically accomplished than OutRun 2 is somewhat foolhardy.

If you look at the car models, they are all very low poly with little in the way of detail in Burnout, with little texturing, relying instead on single colours to map the cars. Those that do have more detailed paint schemes rely on very low-res blocky textures, ala Ridge Racer V.

Likewise, the locales are similarly low-poly, with similar low-res texturing. Even the people are part of the main building textures (I've spotted a woman with a shopping bag, glued to a shop front).

However Burnout gets away with these graphical failings by running from a zoomed out perspective (blocky textures look less blocky from a distance), running at a very high speed, throwing plenty of these graphically primative elements at the screen at once and throwing all sorts of special effects at the screen, mainly speed blurring and sparks.

Regardless, both games are trying to acheive very different things with their engines, so whilst Burnout's engine is technically the ugliest, it's the ugliest by neccessity.

believe me i am no playstation fan (my ps2 has long been relegated to the cupboard - until GTA - SA anyway) - but if this had been any other game other than Ourrun 2, i am not sure the graphics would have stood out from the all usual suspects in the racing genre.

on my TV the car looks very ill defined and blurry. on the title screen the reds heavily bleed through the text ect - as well as on the car. me thinks i need a new HD tv. the difference between the coin-op and my TV is profound.

Nah.

What you're experiencing is the side-effect of Microsoft using really cheap DAC chips in the Xbox.

The RGB picture on the Xbox is the worst of any console I can remember, but I've found that a bit of tweaking with brightness on my TV and the in-game menu can sort it out to a degree.

It's not perfect, but I've found you can get used to it.

Grudgingly I have to agree there.

I paused BO3 a few times last night in game and it really breaks the illusion when you see how primitive the immediate sides of the track are.

Still, it does the job and 99% it looks fantastic in motion so you can't complain really. Thoughj in a way, it is more accomplished because it pulls off the illusion of looking amazing whilst working whithin the PS2's limits...or maybe not.

They've managed it in Burnout though. Is it 8 players as well?

Burnout 3 is 6 players max for racing and road rage. 8 players for crash mode.

I don't think I'll miss traffic to be honest. Not in a full game with 8 racers. I'm interested as to how the branching will work online. ie. will everyone go where the lead player goes or will it be picked by the host beforehand?

Whoever gets to the junction first chooses, the other lane is then blocked off. (or so I hear)

You don't really notice the missing traffic when playing online. Just concentrating on catching people up is enough to think about. It's fucking good stuff online.

I noticed the lack of traffic in the demo, and thought it made the game suffer on Live as a result, especially when you were a little off the pace of the leaders. In fact, I had more fun offline than online on Saturday as a result. To me the Outrun experience includes weaving in and out of traffic. I'm sure it will still be great fun, especially with 8 players rather than 4, but I'm still disappointed.

I'd love it if Outrun 2 had custom soundtrack support.  The original songs are awesome but be nice to use the likes of The Prodigy as well to race along to, perfect for this sort of game, and Burnout 3.

As much as I love the Prodigy, OutRun without it's own soundtrack would be like the 70's with out Disco.

The first thing I done was turn the SFX down a bit and stick the music on full blast.

Nah, it's a good thing. less chance of random crashes into annoying traffic, leading to less broken controllers from losing your leading position in a matter of seconds.
