'official Outrun 2 Thread'

OK. Say you've got a corner followed by a short straight and another corner. You can slide around the first turn, continue the slide down the straight and into the second turn. The camera won't follow the car smoothy, instead it smoothly tracks you around the first corner, tries to jerk into a straight ahead view on the straight, realises that you're still sliding so jerks back behind the car and then jerks again into the final turn.

Also it jerks a heck of a lot on the runaway train hairpin on the Daytona 2 track which makes no sense at all as it's really no different to the roundabout on the Metropolis course in terms of layout.

Similarly the camera jerks if you run over a kerb in the Daytona 2 city disproportionately to the height of the kerb. Not to mention that it'll jerk for every movement of the car. So if the front left goes up, then the rear, and the front goes back down onto the road, followed by the rear, there's a very nasty jerk-jerk-jerk-jerk which is rather nauseating at times, especially when you've cut 4 kerbs in succession.

Also: The Testarossa has been modified from the arcade version. The engine cover has reverted back to its classic OutRun look from the flat look it had in the arcade. That's not a criticism, by the way. Just a bit of trivia for you!

What are the extra cars burai?  PM me with them if you want.

Your secret cars are:

328 GTS - Intermediate

250 GTO - Professional

512 BB - Professional

F355 Spider - Intermediate

The last of which is a big throwback to a certain other Sega racer. :(

Nice to see the First one and the last one listed in there. So is the arcade testarossa in there ( I think it`s the 512 TR) along with the original looking testarossa or is it just the original looking testarossa in there now? Cause when playing the demo i came across the arcade testarossa quite a few times?

Huh? How can you get better drifting? I've been playing the demo like a mad man over the past couple of days and the drifting is basically all automatic, there's so little you need to do to get it right.

Yea, like what Hodge said. Also, counter-drifting is much easier to enter if you continue the gear-flick as you apply opposite lock, thus keeping the speed higher. Changing down to fifth (or another gear) allows one to control the speed of the car much better entering a corner. And like in Sega Rally, too much brake could result in the gears dropping down too far and then you're at the wrong speed. Keeping a high gear doesn't affect the speed-loss in the same way braking would.

This is what I've been getting from playing OR2 although it's obviously not true for everyone to play like this -- using Sega Rally as an example again, there were some AT players that were just as good and had their own little quirks/gameplay tactics although on average, they were much slower.

It's not about getting it right, but about getting it fast AND right

Sorry to say. I thought it was a bit ..meh.. IMO.

I'm with you.

The game has one trick that it does very well, but it's not complex, intense or deep enough to stand as a home experience - certainly not as a full price game, anyway. I love Outrun 2 in the arcade, but it was always going to struggle to be a satisfying home experience.

I could spend a lifetime shaving milliseconds off of my Virtua Racing: Flat Out times, but I'm already bored of Outrun 2, and I can't quite pin down why. I'm tempted to keep playing in the hope that the unlockable tracks are more interesting, mind.

The drift mechanic is as lovely as ever, but the whole game just feels a bit. . . pedestrian.

Charming.

Anyway, doubtless it has been mentioned before, but does it have custom soundtrack support?

heathen!

The bottom line, chums, is that if everything in the world was made this way, and understood its purpose so well, the universe would be an immeasurably happier place. OutRun 2 is glorious. If this game doesn't make you beam like a big happy idiot, you might as well just throw all your consoles into a quarry. And ideally, chuck yourself in there with them - you're only making things worse for everyone, you soulless, joyless nightsoil. Ciao!

 Campbell pwns all. as usual.

I still don't think it's that great. It looks good enough and it plays well, but it feels hollow and shallow (just like the arcade version). It hardly ever gives this feeling of speed and adrenaline like BO3 does. If it wasn't for the Sega logo and the Outrun name, it could just have been another run-of-the-mill also-ran racer.

What modes are supported in online play? If it's just the basic racing (without traffic), I think I'll give this one a miss.

I can see why people could find it indifferent but you've got to look deeper. It really is a joy. If you don't want or feel the need to then don't. I like Burnout 3 aswell but it's a totally different experience.

The real beauty comes from having a perfect run, in some of the more difficult stages whipping round the bends, dropping gears here and there and drifting at break neck speeds. Its like a score based racer. Your rival is yourself, it's about the best times and not really racing at all. Most of Segas best games are based on the same principle, NiGHTS as an example.

Having tinted glasses on only enhances the game B)

I can never be arsed with Manual Transmission in racing games, as it's too much fiddling about for too little reward. I've heard some talk about some advanced drifting techniques only being open to those who choose MT. Is it really necessary to twat around with the gearbox to get the most out of OR2?

Stuff that. I can never get to grips with manual gears in any racer for some reason.

Normally I'd agree. OutRun 2 is the first game in which I've ever even tried manual gears.

DRIFTU

Maybe I just couldn't get used to "Brake Drifting". Using the gears makes things much tighter and faster.

Put it this way, you'll get bummed online with AT

I disagree. The fact is that some of the bits in mission mode expect you to reach silly speeds around corners, and that your speed isn't brought down by drifting round it if you're in automatic. in fact, rather like initial D, you can go faster drifting in some circumstances.

But it's all subjective, innit?
