Burnout 3

Now 73% through it and I've got a total of $76 million on the Crash Junctions! Another $14 million and I unlock another vehicle!

73% already? If you got that today that is some serious gameplay.

I'm on 4% and still having touble getting used to using the circle and square buttons to accelerate and brake compared to the triggers of the GC version. So my driving is currently terrible. Road Rage mode is fantastic and the game gets a lot better with the EA Trax and the DJ turned off.

The loading times to retry a crash junction are really irritating. They were absent (or at least brief) in the GC version of B2 and I hoped they would be mercifully short or non existent in this iteration. Sadly I was wrong.

Unfortunately its also suffers from EA's worst thing: "EA Trax". Although I'll freely admit there are at least 3-5 songs on the soundtrack that I like (Ash, Franz Ferdinand and Futureheads come to mind), which is a better hit rate than most EA games.

No EA's worst thing is their version of Live. I could live with only custom tracks if they hadn't fudged up the online play.

Is this what PS2 owners have had to put up with?

Jeez they have a lot to learn.

103 golds so far, about 60% done.

As great as certain game modes are (Road Rage, Race), there are some I'm dredding playing. For example the bastard Face offs on that European Autobahn are all fucking gay. I don't know how many times I have to take down the opponent only for him to get me on the last corner and win the fucking thing. Surely there's some inbalance in this mode. Another problem is if he gets you at the start and zooms off, it's almost impossible to catch up with him, I HATE FACE OFFS!

The rest is fucking great though (except Live aswell)

Considering the absolutely horrific influence the first 2 games had on my real-life driving (but only in the morning when there aren't many people about kids), I can see this making things 10 times worse...

On game related comments though I'm loving the racing (esp. rage...), i'm hating the EA Trax aspect (playing PS2 version), the fact that after auto saving you have to press continue (even though you have no other option), the waiting for restarts to load, those two fucking annoying little cars on the loading screen, and the fact that the replay camera isn't controllable in crash mode.

I really hope all the error messages on Live are just due to the huge amount of users today.

You gotta admit, when you're actually in a game Live it's brilliant. Completely lag-free.

It's the rest that is shit.

the sad thing is judging by past records i don't think they'll bother fixing it either.

ask the Generals community.

although this is severely broken so maybe they will have to act.

i've just spent 40 minutes online trying to get a game with my cousin and in the end it crashed with the static noise. so i've given up.

i do agree it's an amazing experience if you get in.

how the fuck this got 9/10 when it's so broken i don't know. then again i guess no one could have predicted EA would cock it up this much.

well except PS2 owners who already have to put up with this.

The soundtrack is pretty good for EA. OK, it's got wank like Frank Ferdinand and Funeral For A Friend but it also has excellent stuff like The Bouncing Souls and PEnnywise.

Looks like MS were right about keeping Live as an internal thing. EA have shown what a mess it could have been.

From the Official XBL forum:

My buddy just got off the phone with MicroSoft because he was having a very hard time getting into races and reconnecting after the race. They told him that one known issue is a conflict with the XBL auto launch menu and EAs servers (it doesn't effect everyone). If you are unsure what the auto-launch menu is, it is the menu that opens when there is no disc in your Xbox that shows how many friends you have online, and you can go in and add gamertags to your friend list...ect. Anyway disable the auto-launch option and log into XBL through the burnout menus and that should hopfully resolve your problems.

Hope this helps

Nice one Soong. :D

Let's hope this work's. And it's not a "Have you restarted/rebooted your computer" style of helpdesk response.

I'll try it later though.

I'm sticking with offline for now.

Lest the online shanigans spoil my Burnout experience too much.

nope not at all. i've had auto sign on disabled forever, even after the last update that turned it back on.

well around 2 hours and i still haven't had a race with a friend.

at least they're coming up with new and random error messages now.

"unknown Room"

"wrong game"

and so on and so forth.

my favourite is the loud electronic noise that tells you to turn your xbox off.

Some futher impressions.

More races. More fun. This game seems to epitomise what arcade games, never mind arcade racing should be all about. Fun, fast, immediate enjoyment and accessibility. I know comparing this game to PGR2 is like comparing GamesTM to Edge but the main difference seems to be that even if you are shit, you're still in with a chance. You can take down other cars. Being able to battle your way back to 1st place from 6th is so satisfying. Equally annoying is losing 1st place and ending up near the back.

But that's what makes it great. Tactics, too. Do you hang back, waiting to attack the first car? It's like being a sitting duck when you've just made first place. Waiting for the proverbial red shell to hit you. At first I thought the lack of a map was a glaring ommission, but it makes it more fun. Where are the other cars behing me?! What you don't know... hits you hard. Impact time: gets you right back into the thick of things.

Oh, this is fun.

Ya know, it may have the worst netcode ever and everything... but it's still not very good anyway. Am I alone in thinking this?

Driving along trying desperately to see where the road is going when suddently two opponents you slammed into the wall earlier in the race have hunted you down are now doing all in their power to make your face meet the oncoming wall at 100mph+. Now that is racing. No automatons in this game. It is the first time I recall Ai cars purposely out to get me and it is the biggest step up from the previous Burnout games.

I like going flat out at all times to win the races, taking out whatever car is in front of me on the way there. Makes the latter part of the race interesting when they come to get their revenge.

Things I don't like however are:

- Same car, different pain job. Unlocking what is essentially the same car over and over again is not as much fun as unlocking say the one Muscle car in Burnout 2

- Loading. Perhaps I have been spoiled by Nintendo but the constant loading is really irritating me.

- Traffic. Still pretty sparse even in the main city parts of the circuit. The game is now more about trying to be crashed by your opponents instead of threading through traffic at light speed.

- The OTT interface. I am a fan of keeping things simple and the zooming into the map, confirming things over and over again. I also find that my progress is not as clear on the world map as it was in Burnout 1 and 2. But that might just be me.

Fantastic game. haven't stopped playing it since I got it.

only thing I'd say against it is that the cars feel very light to handle, but it's just something I'll get used to. housemate got the PS2 version so live's a no go anyway, unless I get the xbox version in due course. Shame it sounds like it's a bit messed up, but at least it's only the usual suspects are predictably banging on about it on here like it's the end of the world or something.

Quite. I mean the point of AUTOSAVE is that it saves, well, AUTOMATICALLY. Therefore you don't need me to tell you to CONFIRM and CONTINUE.

Urk, got home from work and stuck this into the Xbox, played races until I got too tired and my reactions started to go, then played lots of crash junctions, then my house mate got back from the pub and we played a lot more crash junctions. My right hand is stuck in a permanent claw shape, I've got a smile on my face that would make the Joker look well adjusted, and I really need to go to bed. The worst thing is a little part of my brain is saying I just go back downstairs and play a little bit more. :D

The crash modes are great. I think it was in the Alpines where I hit an oncoming rig after collecting the boost and I must have been thrown 50 feet in the air! Amazing. Jaw-dropping stuff.

Bought this during my break today. Only just got into it, playing the World Tour- wow, it just gives and gives when you do well, doesn't it? It's bloody fast, too- I thought starting on the small cars would be annoying, but, by gum, it's eye-bleeding!

The only thing that gets me is the soundtrack- it's far too samey. Burnout 2 had variety in it's home-made stuff...

Will get stuck in tomorrow.
