Burnout 3

You know how incredibly frustrating it is in something like PGR2 when you're playing online and someone smashes you into the wall?

I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy a game where that's the entire point. I think I'll get really really really fed up with it really quickly.

Doesn't it just seem like a really frustrating idea?

In PGR2 you're trying to drive quickly so people fucking you up, fucks you off. In Burnout 3, you're trying to take people out so people fucking you up is the whole point of playing in the first place.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Looking very nice indeed, I'm liking the swooping-blurry camera effect on the crashes. Although the music (judging by the site) is rather shit, looks like I'll have to turn the bastard thing down... again.

I've been playing the demo every time Rllmuk takes a while to load, when the kettle's boiling, when I'm waiting for the oven to heat up... it's massively addictive. I've never had so much fun in a game when I'm not winning before. 6th place isn't a bore- it's a chance to not break on the next bend and take out three other cars. :) The aftertouch system is sublime, getting Takeout vengence on someone by sliding into them is excellent, and the superb idea of adding a "Matrix time" button to slow down the action during a smash is worth it's wieght in gold.

Shaping up to be my Game Of The Year.

I had a go yesterday and agree that there is nothing better than setting up a beautiful takedown. It's actually so much fun that you wan't to slow down to get your speed and all the angles just right. Can't believe it looks this good on PS2!

The online modes are absolutely brilliant - teaming up with other cars (four to a side) to smash each other to bits, having four people race for the finish while four others try to fuck them up, multiplayer crash junctions... it's all good. Really, really good. The demo doesn't even do it an ounce of justice.

GOTY? Perhaps. But then, Christmas is a busy time in 2004... but certainly, it's the arcade racing game of the year, if not of all time (since OutRun, certainly). And I don't say that lightly. :)

Now that Crash of the Week is lame. We all can do much better. At least, I can for sure :)

Tell me, is the following good or bad: a crash course has these icons spead over the course: 2x bonus, 4x bonus, gold coin (for extra points). When I started playing the game I mainly focussed on the traffic, trying to crash into trucks and tip over busses. I never ever reached a high score. Then I started aiming for the 4x bonus icon and got one highscore after another. 8 cars + 4 busses + 1 truck = 250.000 points (example). 6 cars + 2 buses + 2 vans + 4x bonus = 470.000 (example). Good? Bad?

Oh look, my first sex wee. ;)

Looks absolutely spectacular.

Sadly, NFS:U2 will probably outsell it 10 to 1. mad.gif

Well obviously NFSU2 will outsell it, but Burnout 3 will do just fine with EA's help I reckon. It has two months or so to dominate before that's released anyway.

I've actually hidden the demo disk to stop myself playing the damn thing so much- I don't want to cane it before the full game comes out.

Personally, I'm looking forward to custom soundtracks in crash mode (again). There's nothing quite like smashing head-on into a truck to the sounds of the music from Grange Hill.

EA are gonna advertising Burnout 3 to HELL AND BACK.I wouldn't write-off it's commercial chances against NFSU2 just yet.

Although yeah, it's quite a challenge.

Real cars? That you can customise? That's probably enough for the ignorant masses.

Although the move to EA should certainly help the game reach a broader audience.

The demo disc is stupidly addictive, even with just one lap and one car to drive I've been glued to it for hours and I've ended up sticking it on most nights since I've had it. It feels completely different to the previous Burnouts to me but in a good way, the Takedown idea is brilliantly implemented as you're always looking ahead for sneaky opportunities to take your opponents out, it makes you look at the track differently. I like looking ahead for potential places to crash on purpose, slamming into an oil tanker and watching the disaster that follows with all your opponents trying to avoid crashing as you steer the wreckage into them is wonderful. Going over the finish line in slo-mo just after a smash looks cool as fuck, I've ended up doing that intentionally too just to gawp at the visuals and physics.

When you start chaining Takedowns together and the bonuses start racking up the adrenaline really starts flowing, it's tense but loads of fun and guaranteed to put a huge grin on your face. Anyone worried about the combat elements should sleep easy, it's just massively enhanced the game. The only thing I'm unsure about is the lack of a rear view mirror, I'm not sure if this has been added to the final code. Anyone?

I'm gagging for this now, with Halo II that Live sub will be worth every penny.

Two questions i have

1) have they fixed the boost from the demo so that you can only use it when its full?

2)have they added in the nice blur around the edges of the screen when you do boost?

I don't think they're going to "fix" the boost, because it's a deliberate decision to let you boost without a full bar. With all the takedowns and stuff, it makes more sense to let you boost at any time, because then you can use it to nudge people when you see an opportunity open up.

L1 - there's a rear view, but no actual rear view mirror. Still, that makes it all the more fun - you can hear the opposition coming up behind you, but often they'll just come crashing right into you. Don't know if it's in the demo, but the enemies have coloured indicators over them that show their aggression (yellow, orange and red) that changes the more you mess with them. Takedown the same car a couple of times and he'll be gunning for revenge before you can make it round the next corner... :(

I've been playing the code almost solidly (well, as solidly as my schedule allows) for a week now and I'm still only about 35% of the way through it. Admittedly, I'm being anal and making sure I've got every gold medal before moving onto another area (unlike some folks here who've been just clearing races at the lowest level to unlock stuff, then coming back) but still... that's some longevity right there. And I haven't even taken my save online yet because the PS2 servers aren't up and running at the moment (only played Xbox version online). Joy. ;)

Like it says above, boost isn't like the other Burnout games - you can use it anytime, even if you've only got a little. How much you get depends on what you're racing; if you're doing a Burning Lap with no opposition, you'll get more reward for driving into oncoming traffic or near misses than you would if you're doing a Road Rage event where there are other cars to smash up. And the blurring effect is lovely, although if you drop speed quickly then the jarring effect of the screen 'bouncing' back on itself like a ripple is a little hard on the eyes if you're not used to it. :(

I know about hitting L1 to go into rear view but I always end up slamming into something if I use it for more than a couple of seconds. It's not a big deal really, as you say it probably just adds to the fun.

I noticed the different coloured markers above the cars but I wasn't sure what they meant, it makes sense now but I'm colourblind so it won't make much difference to the way I play it. It's a similar system to SSX I suppose?
