controversial opinions on music

Eh? What is it? Modern classical? Some of my mates are composers who write lots of music pushing the boundaries of song construction, time signatures and themes. All of their music is still shit.

hahahaha cant really argue with that!

But yeah, bands like sinergy are basically modern classical. With screaming and loud guitars of course.

If you sequenced one of beethoven's symphonies in a music program exactly as its written on the sheet music, wouldn't it be the most technically proficient rendition of that symphony possible?

No, not at all. Cos you wouldnt have to play it live 5 nights a week and get it exactly right each time.

Can someone change the title of this topic to "controversial opinions on music that in no way conflict with my own", please. This is flagrant false advertising.

You are entitled to any opinion you like. But what point is there in just listing? I'd much rather discuss. in the grand scheme of things I couldnt give a toss what any of you think about music, but in the context of this thread i'd like to think that a statement that is truly controversial might actually spark some discussion.

ODB's Return To 36 Chambers is the best Wu-Tang album, including Enter The Wu-Tang.

Outkast have never released a good album, but have fooled everyone into thinking they have by releasing a selection of fantastic singles.

Oh, I thought of another one! Notorious BIG's "Gimme the Loot" is the best hip hop song of the 90s. It is slammin' and dope and everything that's awesome rolled into five minutes.

I'm afraid I will never be able to take you seriously ever again.

I'll get by. One day at a time.

But Return to 36 Chambers clearly is the very best output from Wu-Tang. "Snakes", man! Boy howdy, I love that song. The top five, according to me:

1. Return to 36 Chambers - Ol' Dirty Bastard

2. Enter the Wu-Tang - Wu-Tang Clan

3. Liquid Swords - GZA

4. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx - Raekwon

5. Ironman - Ghostface Killah

He has the best bit in the best song on Enter the Wu-Tang, too! His verse in "Da Mystery of Shadowboxin'". Ghostface Killah samples that bit where he goes 'Intro-ducin' the Ghooooooost-faaaaaace Killaaaaaaaheeeeeaaaeaaa' about five times on every album he releases.

No one cares what you think, you BOUGHT ALL OF EVANESCENCE AND LINKIN PARKS ALBUMS.

Kerraig: unskilled music alert!

Kill. Kill. Kill.

Some highly skilled producers on those albums though. Do they count?

Whoever makes the Linkin Park singer's voice sound good must be some kind of genius.

Liquid Swords should be number one, if you count the Gravediggaz as Wu-Tang their first album should be number two.

It's sampled in one song on one album, man :)

Yeah, ODB's verse on Chessboxin' is great. But only because he's rapping about other (better) Clan members :o;);)

you can get a far greater variety of sound out of a guitar than with any synth.

and it sounds like it's played with feeling due to the nature of the instrument. most synth music sounds like MIDI.

and finally, you cannot even approximate the sound of a guitar using a synth. only Jon Lord and his Hammond ever came close.

finally finally, most electronica offers almost zero technical proficiency since it is mostly pre-programmed and played back afterwards. thus, with very few exceptions, it is extremely unimpressive to a musician.

Speaking as a musician - what a load of horseshit.

It's on Ironman at least twice, I swear! And I've definitely heard it on Supreme Clientele, too.

Personally, I'd say the only Wu-Tang member who is actually more talented than ODB is the GZA, but ODB is the most unique and interesting MC by a very wide margin.

Who said anything about bought :)

But seriously, you have to listen to more than Wu-Tang Clan to get the best song or album of the 90's. Thats like listening to only one group and proclaiming them the best ever.

Every single point a load of rubbish. er, except 3, although there have been quite a few advances in instrument synthesis over the last few years you're right in saying that synths can't duplicate the sound of a guitar (although I do think approximation is getting better and better). I have a heard a few models which have been suprisingly good, but go outside a small range the quality breaks down. Ah well, Guitars aren't everything afterall.

Shimmy Shimmy and Rawhaide are fucking LARGe tracks Cal, you know this. :)

Shimmy Shimmy Ya would be great if it was an instrumental :o

For me, Method Man, GZA, Ghostface, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck and even RZA are better MC's than ODB. Ol' Dirty is just a little too crazy for me. I like him on Clan songs, but I couldn't take too much of just him. Besides, it's always the production that determines which Wu solo releases come good. It was all up to the RZA. I reckon.
