Prometheus gets a bad rap - but I'd put it 3rd overall behind Alien and Aliens (original cut not the boring directors cut) - the worst of it all is surely Alien Covenant - that is just full stop piss poor

I'd personally put the Alien series in order of release. It's been downhill ever since the original (though Aliens is still great, just not as good as Alien). Obviously Alien: Isolation gets slotted in at number 3 if we allow non-films into the canon.

It doesn't seem like everyone on the forum realises Grobbelboy just said Prometheus is better than Aliens and Alien 3. That's what he just said. I know it's the point of the thread and it's not like I expect the rest of the forum to suddenly stop and everyone come in here and pile on him, record number of reports and a 6 month ban. It is the point of thread. There's still a line though isn't there?

I'm not sure this even is a controversial opinion but based on the average IMDB rating for the Marvel films I'm guessing I belong in the minority when I say that most Marvel films are overrated and leave me cold.

If we're talking 5 star systems most are rated about a star too much. Infinity War is a standout. Most of the rest are threes.

The Happening is great! It depicts the human race under attack by an invisible enemy that forces sane people to take their own lives, desperate to understand what is actually happening a theory is offered that the planets ecosystem - more specifically it's plant life - could be responsible. It's the sort of hokey plot that you'd expect from a 1950s era Science Fiction film, such as The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Instead of Communism, we have our current preoccupation with the climate crisis. Viewed as a modern attempt at this classic genre I believe that The Happening was one of the most enjoyable films out in 2008. Mark Wahlberg is superb as the vacant school teacher desperately trying to wrap his head around the unexplainable, while queen of kookiness Zooey Deschanel makes the perfect partner for him. The acting is as joyfully hammy as the script and as amusing to watch as the elaborate suicide scenes. People get too hung up on M Night Shyamalan's intentions, saying he had not set out to make a comedy throwback movie to a more innocent time, but I have nothing but sympathy for them...with the right mindset this truly is a four star film.

Must admit I enjoyed the original a little less when revisiting it a few months back. Although I found the story, acting and gunplay are still watchable (and must surely get a pass for being so innovative at the time), it's the hand-to-hand combat that really bored me. Such pitter-patter bollocks, my 4 year old lands harder hits on me when we are play fighting (see also Kill Bill).

 

The likes of Wick, Nobody etc have spoiled us in this regard.

 

Edit: and the less said about the 4th film the better - none of the redeeming features of the original, just a bloated mess.

Yes, the pat-a-cake fist fights are truly terrible.
I think there are individual scenes which are okay - probably some of the fire-fights as you suggest.

I find all the leather and sunglasses quite laughable though. I like Lawrence Fishburne but that character is terrible. Even the name 'Morpheus' is pretentious and when he's being all profound I just want to cringe. The less said about Mr Edgy 'baddie in their midst' the better.

 

I haven't seen the latest one and have no desire to.

I tried watching one, The Grand Budapest Hotel I think and stopped after about 15 minutes because it was so self-consciously deciding to go up its own arse.

 

I remember being in a bad mood and thoroughly disliking The Matrix while watching it.  The plot is a teenagers idea of clever, takes three films to do what Men in Black does as a twenty second post-credit sequence and the use of Marilyn Manson over the end credits summed the whole thing up perfectly - old tricks, dressed up in modern clothes.

Other than The Nightmare Before Christmas, his entire oeuvre is exactly the same and utterly uninspiring.

Not sure I'd agree that Pee-wee's Big Adventure is exactly the same as Ed Wood or Dumbo, or the Planet of the Apes is exactly the same as Sweeney Todd, but okay.

Burton's least Tim Burtony™ films are probably Ed Wood (which is great), Big Fish (which is good), and Big Eyes (which is OK).
