Why I Hate Squaresoft

I'm not a gibbering FFVII fanboy or anything but at the time it was rather spectacular, and something new for quite a large number of people. Hence its popularity I guess.

The problem is they've not really moved on in any significant way. Making a horrible film and nearly sinking the company probably does that to you.

Welcome to your twice weekly 'Square are shit' / 'no they aint' thread.

Square are such and easy target, everyone seems to hate them, I wonder sometime who buys their games.

Personally FFXI, Vagrant Story and FF Tactics would always get into my top 10, all fantastic games. I think it would be fair to have this much hatred for Square if they rushed things out, but all of the FF games are labours of love, with the some of the best monster design and cohesive fantasy worlds ever invented.

Anyway Valkyrie Profile was ok, I liked the graphics but the story didnt hook me.

3 top games at least - better than a load of companies I can think of.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

Beyond Good and Evil

Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow

Three top games in one year. Some companies are capable of THIS.

:Whisper it....It wasn't made by anyone Japanese, so....:

So, you're saying I'm a nipponphile or something? Hmm, *looks at games collection* (not really I'm in work :D)

More western games bought in the past year than japanese. Most of the games I'm looking forward to this year (bar FFXII & RE4) are western.

Cheap.

I love RPG's.

It's not my fault that most of Square's are shit.

:D

I've not played any RPG that rivals any of Square's best*, ever.

And of course it's putting them in a bit of a dull light by referring to the likes of the Bouncer and Driving Emotion Type Shit. :D

*Chrono Trigger/Cross, FFVI/VII/VIII, Vagrant Story, etc.

FF7- great. Had a definate stylistic feel to it, an intriguing plot, varied places, a fun magic system, and didn't take itself too seriously.

FF8- good. Had a definate stylistic feel to it, and a reasonable story (well, at least you got to visit varied places, and you frequently found yourself in the aftermaths of battles which I found neat) but the magic system was insanely overcomplicated. For madmen like me, though, more than playable.

FF9- they just rolled out the old cliches for this one, didn't they?

FF10- WTF?!

HIGH FIVE DOT JAY PEG

FF VIII was the beginning of things going down-hill, everything after and including FF IX has been pretty bad IMO. the story in VIII was dire, but the actual gameplay was very ingenious and enjoyable (until the game forced you to re-arrange everything, which was a serious flaw).

apart from VS which I don't personally rate, Sprite Machine is dead-on. Chrono Cross is fan-friggin-tastic, anyone who hasn't played it is doing themselves a disservice. FF VI and VII are the pinnacle of the FF series.

Oh, and the stories are sometimes bad, but often very enjoyable. So sue me if they aren't award-winning, I still find them completely acceptable.

And biglime - are you not enthused to hear that Sakaguchi has his own development studio now, away from Square?
