Why I Hate Squaresoft

Think of your favourite narrative based games. Now think of your favourite novels or movies. Has the best game you can think of got the depth of characterisation, structure or narrative flow of a good book or film?

I'm not saying games shouldn't or can't be as well written and thoughtful, just that I've never encountered one that has and as such I've never played a game expecting the same kind of emotional involvement I would expect from a film or novel.

FF4 through 10 (and pretty much all RPGs) are basically soap opera. Goofy anime meets D&D soap opera to hang the character progression / levelling up / combat dynamics / exploration and eye candy off.

God bless low expectations.

Now...where's that copy of Driv3r....

Square haven't produced anything oustanding since FF7 IMO....

what hub said, you dolt.

In a thread where you have jibed the company, you forget to mention FFtactics - one of the best marriages of story, gameplay and 'feel' that has been managed on a console in my opinion. I also have to submit that a few of there games post FFV7 have come up to muster... those games are not FF8 and 10 though

One of the most returned games of all time, apparently.

It was alright, I suppose. the music was great, but the random battles were still as shit as they've ever been. and anyone who cried at the aeris getting moidered scene is a bit...unbalanced, IMO. :D

Pff

You = dead inside.

FFVII is the ultimate and lasting proof that videogames can be emotional and that there's more to game narrative than just filler for loading screens.

FFVIII, on the other hand, shows that it's not as easy as it looks. :D

FFXI_BOX.jpg

Haven't played it.

But I have to assume that the only reason it's any good is that they didn't have to come up with a plot or any dialogue.

Fucking hell. I dread the day they ever consider trying to make a film.

Oh, wait...

I think the one thing that Square REALLY excell in is art direction, architecture and graphical imagination. More so than any other company IMHO. Thats something that's just not arguable, again IMHO.

Up for debate is definately their ability to tell a story, which is hit and miss... and their reliance on certain gameplay conventions that have become anachronistic.

FFXII will improve on this I'm sure of it. :D

Comment away. I probably won't ever play it. MMORPG's aren't my thing.

I think the same thing, I've tried several since getting FFXi and hated them all. There a re few peopel who seem to hop around these games, I still cannot figure out why.

Do you think in Japan the 'hardcore' gamers regard Squaresoft in the same way we do EA?

On the subject of their actual games, FFVII had mini games by the truck load, lots of fun set pieces and a theme park. Fantastic

FFVIII had a card/dominos hybrid game. As did IX. The less said about X's mini game the better. All shit

Their games need more...fun, really.

FF7- great. Had a definate stylistic feel to it, an intriguing plot, varied places, a fun magic system, and didn't take itself too seriously.

FF8- good. Had a definate stylistic feel to it, and a reasonable story (well, at least you got to visit varied places, and you frequently found yourself in the aftermaths of battles which I found neat) but the magic system was insanely overcomplicated. For madmen like me, though, more than playable.

FF9- they just rolled out the old cliches for this one, didn't they?

FF10- WTF?!

Einhander was an excellent, distinctive shooter - a godsend on the PS.

FF7, on the other hand, must be the single most overrated game modern history - so you can imagine what I think of the subsequent iterations.

Anyway, apart from the dismissal of Einhander I'm in agreement with biglime.
