Disgaea Hour of Darkness

Ripped from Pillage eh? At least they have taste.

Actually, not sure who got to market first. The Japanese PB is out already, so it could be close. Claim it anyway.

There's some stuff on IGN, including a hands-on with the Japanese version.

Phantom Brave looks rather nice. I haven't even properly started La Pucelle yet.

Atlus have another one coming out...it was on the magic box...erm...StellaDeus, that's it. Looks nice too.

Here's a Disgaea warning I just this minute culled from bitter experience:

I was in an item world, and doing okay. I got to level 10 and got a Mr. Gincy's Exit, and since everyone was still alive, I decided to press on. It was at level 18 when I lost a couple of characters and didn't have any items to regain SP that I decided I'd better cut my losses and leave. And that's when I discovered that at level 10, you aren't actually given a Gincy's Exit, you just have the option to use it there and then. Since the Exit was displayed along with all my other bonuses for level 10, I assumed it had been put in my inventory.

But no! So that was at least two hours wasted - I pressed on regardelss, and managed to get through to level 19 and got next to the exit, but a crazy chain of Geo Panel explosions (which I killed the exit guardian with) left me standing on a damage panel, and that's what killed me. I was also asleep! Asleep, standing right next to the exit that would have taken me to level 20 and a chance of escape. Imagine the shaking of my tiny fist.

Bugger. So remember, you can't take that Mr. Gincy's Exit with you.

Arc : Twilight of the Spirits was, again, similar to Pillage's. Hell, I even designed a battle system about 18 months ago was similar. I wouldn't be surprised if it could be traced even further back.

Not that I'm saying Pillage is unoriginal, just that it's clearly not the first use of this system as Sam ponders.

You can! You just have to make sure you have space in your inventory. Otherwise items go into your item box thing.

My PS2 sounds like it really does not like this game. Lots of clunking noises and the drive speeding up and slowing down. But as I have read this is a problem on some PS2s with CD based games. Enjoying the game so far even though I do not understand all of its nuances yet.

Finally got round to play Disgaea this weekend. I agree with others that the actual game is superbly deep and fascinating. I also agree that the interface and presentation could do with quite a bit more work. JP's point on cursor placement, for one. However, by rotating the map with R1 and L1, you can normally get a good view of where your cursor and characters are.

Only played about 6 battles so far. Initial impressions are that I prefer Final Fantasy Tactics Advance due to it's "pick up and play"-ness and also it's highly polished presentation. I'll keep at Disgaea at home, however.

I agree that putting this title on CD may have been a bad move. I don't know about the technical differences in the way that CDs and DVDs are treated by the PS2, but my Disgaea disk doesn't seem to stop spinning (due to the music I guess) and the unit sounds like it's on its last legs when loading new level data. Bleurgh. Can I rip it and burn it to DVD?

Yeah, cheers. I did suss that out a few hours later. Problem is that by level 10 you don't have any pigging space in your inventory, so it goes in the warehouse and then you can't use it on the later levels, unless I'm missing something else...

At any rate, I've learned to monitor my inventory carefully. It was still annoying to lose those hours of play - for an important item like the exit (in that context) they shoudl give you the choice of keeping it in your inventory, even if you have to abandon another item to do so.

Bah! This game needs a much larger manual...

I can see your point. There's only been one time when I've not gone into the item world without an exit from the start, and that was the first. Just got to be careful I guess.

Hardly even touched my copy as I've just started playing OOT (first time I've played it).

Disgaea isn't even going to get a look in for the next few weeks.

If you play it a lot, you'll be done with OOT in a week unless you get all the golden spiders. Hint: Don't bother getting ALL of them

This game is messing with my head, there's way too much to think about, what with the effects of the geo mod system, not walking my characters into the space needed for other characters special techniques, setting up team attacks, co-ordinating attacks in the right order etc. etc.

I only realised today that you could "pass" combos over from one enemy to another using area effect spells and the like. Potential for completely insane combos...

the real fun starts with deep level transmigration. Until you have a level 800 laharl you can't really know the meaning of videogaming one hit kills

Blimey!

Absolutely loving this game so far, completely dominating any free time I have. Hardly scratched the surface, barely understand the basics, but am compelled to keep going. As long as the CD drive holds out that is, it sounds as if either the machine is killing the disc or the disc is killing the machine, either way, not good.

Ten hours in and I'm finding it hard to keep going. You have to do too much under your own steam in this game for my liking and seeing as how I found Skies Of Arcadia a push to finish maybe I shouldn't have bothered .

The level design issue really grates though as does the fact the creatures seem to single out your weakest guys which is an annoying cheap tactic that doesn't actually provide a challenge.

I just remembered now that I completed La Pucelle what a pain in the ass Disgaea is, and it is really stripped down in comparison apart from the multiple person combos. In La Pucelle, it goes to a Final Fantasy type screen when you engage and everybody surrounding the enemy you are fighting pitches in to fight. Also, there's no throwing business but there's purifying where you convert monsters and make thse energy waves defract around the battefiled then set them off like a fuse, damaging enemies as you go.

La Pucelle has different objectives and you can retreat meanwhile in Disgaea it's just Kill! and you can't go in and out of the maps. I guess La Pucelle still isn't what you want though, only Vandal Hearts itself will be able to do that! I still quite like Disgaea, it's harder than a Pucelle. I remember having to go around all the maps of chapter 1 4 times to get up the levels to finish the last map :S In La pucelle you only have to do that much preparation for the last few missions.

However the Disgaea sequel whose name I forget because it sounds like a mecha game title... Phantom.. Brave? yeah okay... well anyway that is getting a release over here.

The one with the Pillage like movement looks ace. I'm guessing they've dropped tiles altogether which should be interesting - it will be a lot harder to set up team attacks and such like...

Blimey Indeed!

Level 800!

When the game was at its height in the states there were some crazy screenshots of extreme high level players arond but I can't find any now.

Here's some posturing and tips from Saurian over at NTSC for any rllmuk players that have decided to really look into what the game has to offer specifically with regards to the Cave of Ordeals 3

The way I been doing it makes it easy (I even power up mages using this tactic)

I went into a Legend Excalibur and levelled it until I could steal a Rare Cosmic Blade from an enemy (or got it from a boss, cant remember)

Level this Cosmic Blade to around level 50 or 60 and put a in high Gladiator, maxed Statistision and high/maxed Armsmaster. This weapon will be enough to take care of Cave Of Trails III easily even with a level 1 character.

Equip the sword and get your character to learn Winged Slayer - doesnt matter which character class as long as they have the sword they will learn it. The best way to learn it is to go to Jotunheim (Terrible Cold?) *the one where all but one square is invincible*

Once there - throw all enemies together to make one powerful enemy. Get a charcter to lift and carry this enemy (so it cant move, and the character cant counter) and repeatedly attack it until your weapon mastery goes to level 10.

Use the Dark assembly to power up enemy levels till it costs 250 or 300 to level them up again - this will get you to level 1000 quickly - this value is a good starting point, you'll end up increasing enemy level LOADS to get to level 3000 and beyond.

Now go to Cave of Trails III - position your character to be levelled so the Winged Slayer covers the 3x3 grid of enemies. The first few fights you may need to cast Braveheart on the character b4 he/she attacks - you can cast up to 5x onto the character to double attack. You'll see that the attack power of the character will increase quickly and soon will be able to take the enemies on a Winged Slayer alone, this is when you start to level VERY quickly.

Level up to level 1000 then Transmigrate the character to same class, Genius and (for a fighting character) putt all points onto Attack, for a mage all on INT. You'll find that the starting attack level from level 1 is STILL enough to take Cave Of trails III easy. Now level back to the level b4 you Transmigrated and you'll notice that the characters stats are MUCH higher than the first time round.

I got a Savior levelled up to level 1000, transmigrated and levelled back to 2000 in little time last night using this method. Did the same previously with my other magic characters, you can use an invincible stage to increase spells afterwards. I use this method for all character classes, equip them with the weapon you want them to use after making them learn Slayer and levelling them up. If you need to learn skills fast with another weapon use the same attacking technique I said about in the invincible stage in Jotunheim (same goes for spells)

Again- this is for the more dedicated (and underpopulated) end of the gameplaying rllmuk spectrum but its useful advice nonetheless
