Key points.

  • Takes place on the planet Aether.
  • Roughly same size as the first game.
  • No loading times!
  • New visor - the Echo Visor. Could be used to "see" soundwaves.
  • New weapon ability - multiple fire homing rocket launcher
  • New ability - Screw Attack. More used for exploration than attacking.
  • Two new beams, Dark and Light beams. These have limited ammunition as they are extremely effective.
  • No linkup between Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime Hunters.
  • No LAN mode.
  • Visors not used in multiplayer.

I've not seen any of the vids but has does anyone know how this game sounds? With it's ear searingly haunting tunes Prime was/is an absolute belter, i'm hoping Echoes is the same.

The Fendrana(?) drifts had some really beautiful music.

It doesn't sound like a huge departure from the original but that's no suprise. Still, when you starting from something as good as Prime a tweaked half sequal is still a good thing.

More like 1.75. After all, Metroid 2 probably hasn't taken place before th events of the game.

.::: Ah, wouldn't it be great if they link Echoes with TRoS at the end? Since the GaFe soldiers are already on Aether, it seems like a good setup to introduce more metroids and convince the GaFe to give Samus the order to exterminate all of the metroids at SR388.

For those still in the blue, chronologically the series is build up like this;

- Metroid Zero Mission - GBA (replaces the original Metroid - NES)

- Metroid Prime - GC

- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - GC

- Metroid II: The Return of Samus - GB

- Metroid 3: Super Metroid - SNES

- Metroid 4: Metroid Fusion - GBA

It's nice how Zero Mission and Prime are now effectively parts 'zero' and 'one' judiging by title name.

The final clash against the SA-P would be a good excuse to make Samus lose most of her abilities, too.

.::: For those who missed that part btw; the Ing actually steal all of her equipment in Echoes. Inventive.

Now that is crafty.

It's getting a bit silly, finding ways to get rid of all those abilities all the time, though. I wonder what the connection between the Ing and the Zebesian pirates is...

.::: Well those 'pirates' we saw in the initial screeshots are most likely GaFe soldiers taken over by the Ing, which are some kind of parasites (dare I say the Ing act a bit like the headcrabs from Half-Life and the Flood from HALO).

Since a phazon meteorite also hit Aether, I'm guessing one of the other Pirate Frigates has detected the power source and went after it. Of course, I'm fairly certain the Ing will take over a few Piates as well.

Still havn't got a clue who or what the Luminoth are....

It's quite amazing how such an interesting backstory and universe has been built up over the Metroid series without it ever becoming plot-heavy. The right sort of franchise stuff going on- non-linear connections between all the titles, expanding on and revising interesting ideas.

.::: Yes, the strength of Metroid's story is that is told in actions rather than text. The first didn't need a 'plot', but the second already had implications. Taking the larva along added more plot then text could have done.

Super was terrific with this, the entrance to the planet, the room behind Ridley, the descent into Tourian. Marvellous.

Prime might have used text, but the log entry style of it all still coveyed the 'it just happened' atmosphere without giving you a lecture. I really hope I'll be able to scan some GaFe terminals in Echoes.

Absolutely crackers; she must be really pissed at it by now. Metroid Pi: Samus misplaces her equipment in her purse! "Fuckfuckfuck, I know I had that Ice missile two minutes ago"... *rummage rummage*

Your knowledge of Metroid is frankly a bit unsettling at times.
