How is this for zombie news?

George Romero Set for Land of the Dead

Source: Variety

Thursday, July 15, 2004

George Romero is set to direct Land of the Dead, a horror film that picks up on the zombie saga he hatched with Night of the Living Dead and continued with Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. Variety says the film, from Romero's own script, will begin production in October in Winnipeg or Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh was the site of shooting for Romero's original 1968 zombie trilogy.

In the film, the zombies having taken over the world and those left alive are confined to a walled-in city that keeps out the corpse corps. Anarchy rules the streets, with the wealthy insulated and living in fortified skyscrapers.

The drama revolves around a group of scavengers who must thwart an attempt to overthrow the city while the dead are evolving from brainless slow-moving creatures into more advanced creatures.

Romero had been developing Diamond Dead, a black comedy musical that's being produced by Scott Free and Andrew Gaty, and he also scripted an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, which he may direct for Canadian financier Don Archibald and Lions Gate.

How is this for zombie news? <snip zombie news>

That IS good news and I kinda expected it following the DotD remake's success. However the zombie evolution aspect has me slightly concerned - I really hope it's not a Bub-style development of social skills...

Still, early days and I shall wait with baited breath.

We've been here so many times before that I'm reluctant to believe until it's actually in the can. I so desperately, hugely want this to be good - but bear in mind, of course, that the rumours and plot fragments circulated in recent years have mostly been terrible; that one that had the zombies relegated to bit parts as they decompose on the streets while the humans try and rebuild the world, for example, was a logical progression from Day and yet would, if we're being honest, be quite dull if you like zombies, and the less said about the one where humans roam the wilderness in a Scooby Doo style Mystery Machine the better. So it's quite hard to know whether or not Romero's lost his mad zombie skillz in the 19 years (19 years!) since Day. On the other hand, with a decent budget, Fox behind him and zombies back in vogue, this could genuinely be the best thing ever. The tension, eh?

Apparently he is contractually obliged to deliver an R rated pic to the cinema, but has leeway to release an NC17 version on DVD.

however i'm slightly skeptical about the whole thing cos I read the dead reckoning script and it was horrible. I'd much rather he left it as the greatest trilogy ever made than risk fucking it up now.

I once saw a film called The Video Dead. It had zombies coming out of a TV.

It was rubbish, but memorable for a bit where a zombie gets hit with an iron which sticks in his head, and for the fact that the main character gets chopped in half by a chainsaw at about the mid-point of the film.

I was only 12 or so when I saw it. Ring bells for anyone else?

No running zombies! Hooray!

The practical, level-headed fellow in me is remembering the Dead Reckoning Scooby Doo style Mystery Machine, the general panning Bruiser received and the gap in time between this film and the impossible-to-top excellence of Dawn and Day, and is slightly undecided about all of this. Meanwhile, the zombie film fanboy in me has totally fucking creamed.

Well for those that read the interview, you know where the land of the dead is headed...

SPOILERS

Gang roam the city in their vehicles killing zombies that broke in, going outside the city to get weapons and food, finding any survivors they can. The poor people of the city plan an uprising against the skyscraper wealthy folk. It involves explosives. The gang try to put a stop to it. It eventually all ends in tears with the zombies taking advantage of a mistake in the battle between these poor people and the wealthy folk (human conflict as with previous 3 films) and the Zombies munching all except maybe 1 or 2 main characters who escape in a plane/helicoptor/zombie blasting vehicle.

Yep, saw it as a teenager. There seem to be very few references on 'tinternet - nothing on imdb last time I looked. I'm sure I've got an old issue of Fangoria with some pictures in up in the loft somewhere.

Absolute best zombie film is Zombie by Lucio Fulci.  This movie still scares me to this day.  Plus, it has a scene where a zombie fights a shark underwater.  The movie is gold.

:D

Would that also be known as Zombie flesh eaters? If so, I don't know why but I just can't get interested in it at all :) , really poor, although loads of people seem to like it, I prefer The beyond by far.

I really don't think it is known as Zombie Flesh Eaters. I think I saw part of ZFE once and it had something to do with a few girls on a boat. I have to say ... I did not really like it ... at least the half hour I saw of it was pretty terrible.

If you get a chance, check out this site for information, pictures, videos and sounds from the movie Zombie.

It is also my favorite movie poster of all time.

Zombie and Zombie Flesh Eaters are the same film. It gets confusing because there is also known as Zombi 2. Then there is also ZFE 2 and 3 which are unrelated and Zombie 3 which god knows what that is.

But the film with the underwater Shark and Zombie battle is known as Zombie in the US (as on that cover), Zombi 2 in Italy, and Zombie Flesh Eaters in the UK. And it ISN'T scary in the slightest - It is rare for a Zombie film to be scary. It is a good laugh and full of action.

Oh and ZFH/Zombie/Zombi 2 has one of the catchiest and overused theme tunes in history.

Can anyone remember a film from the 80s that involved a group of teens in a typical white van that goes off the road into a woods and they find a hut that leads into a massive underground lair of horrors including mummified zombies and such? I saw it when I was about 9 and my older brother and sister hired it out of the video shop.

That sounds very much like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Apologies if that's too obvious a guess, but it does!
