eh?

Its a a shorter, alternate retelling of "canon" plot, just as if it took place after Enies Lobby instead of before Arabasta (which is ironic seeing as they did Episode of Arabasta first...) with all the changes that entails. I've not see it, so can't really expand on Lorfarius comment, but it's hardly filler as you see it.

Basically everyone but

Brooke is on the crew when they apparantly find Chopper. It's not filler in the slightest from what I can see but like you say a complete retelling of canon plot. Just seemed odd to me though as they give the original timeline one hell of a kicking for it to be that way.

Ha!

I really don't think I could sit through another Jump-ey show. Bleach pretty much killed my interest stone-dead, and the first few of One Piece seemed to be targeted squarely at... 10-year olds. Like Bleach, I know - but god it was so... rubbish.

I read up to chapter 70 of the One Piece manga and stopped.

Most manga would have been through a large portion of the story by then but One Piece hadn't even begun to attempt to start the beginning of the initial stage of the plot.

Honestly Meh I'll even admit FMA is rubbish if you give OP some time and dont like it. Probably one of the best series to ever come out of Japan.

Piro's post killed any plans to do that, Lorfarius :hat:

He probably became confused by it being pictures and words ;) One Piece is about the journey the plot doesn't consist of a big finale but the adventure to get there. Which is why it's so fantastic with so much happening every issue.

What. The entire plot is essentially to get to the last island and find out what the big treasure is. Everything is part of the story of what happens them leading up to it. If you give up after reading chapter 81, it's clearly something wrong with you. You just can't compare Luffy's non-ending enjoyable idicoy to something Naruto's story of homolust towars his best friend and Ichigo's continual saving of some daft whining bitch in mexico.

Why isn't the new Haruhi series on that chart?

Because the series itself is mixed in with the original series at the moment so it's not technically classified as a new series.

Because KyoAni don't even fucking acknowledge that it exists?

Seriously, their web site says nothing about it (and the melancholoy page only updated the copyright info), they've made no statements and no one has a clue wtf is going on. And I'm not convinced we'll find out before they announce the dvds

One Piece is fantastic. It just has a lot for talking when compared to Naruto, Bleach or Beserk.

It's still my fav series, very much like Hajime no Ippo as far as goodness goes. Though the latter is starting to drag a bit.... but after nearly 900 chapters what do you expect?

Don't tell me they STILL haven't rescued her?

Well, they've found her but at the moment we won't find out what happens to her for another year becasue we have to go through all the fights of the second lieutenant's left adjutant, right-handman's cousin's sister's friend's dog's wife who just so happens to know another guy connected to the 19th duke of the 1st captain of the royal guard of Flim versus some mexican guy with the number 1, oh no wait, it's 11, oh no it's actually a number 0 but no it's actually a fake tattoo with the mexican word for penis instead. And then you still have to name their swords. Oh and the mexican's now turned into a rocking horse for his bankai.

No wonder he doesn't have time to do any backgrounds.

Anyway, go read One Piece. Everyone in this thread apart from Piro has said how awesome it is; surely that's worth something.

Lies. Nothing beats Berserk. Berserk is a MASTERPIECE.

Berserks ART is fantastic, utterly astonishing stuff. But the story has been pretty hit and miss. Current arc is great though...and yeah, those drawings

One Piece is absolutely the best storytelling of any Shonen manga, each chapter is worth a good four of Naruto for plot development (and fifty of Bleach  )

Current new love: Team medical dragon

Hajime no Ippo is glorious, fantastic stuff. Good to have something more...grounded in reality to read every week.

Arts!

I don't think One Piece is bad, just that it may not be for me, and it's too long and intimidating to start.

I can grant you that in respect to the anime; 330 odd episodes isn't easy to burst through all in one go even with extensive use of 5 second skip. I tend to have a problem with anime in that I want to know what happens but the characters aren't speaking fast enough or events are taking to long. That's generally why I prefer reading something since it's a lot more friendly for setting your own pace.

Manga-wise it's pretty much the same as reading any book; it all depends on your reading speed/comprehension and how much you engage with the story.

I think it took me a 2 and a bit days to burn my through One Piece but before I'd gotten an hour into, I was hooked already. If you engage enough with the story it feels less like a chore.

That aside, after reading the first chapter of the new GTO series, I decided to blast through the original again. Fantastic stuff.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Watch it by arc. Why would you even want to blast through it all when you'll have to endure the agonising wait each week when you catch up? Far better to break it down into it's logicial pieces

Sephy, I think the issue at hand is that 300 odd episodes is a pretty daunting number. Also, you do seem quite curiously insistent that people watch these shows arc by arc... what gives? Did a weekly show traumatise you as a child?

300eps is a daunting number, hence my suggestion. Take advantage of those chunks rather then moan how the week wait is annoying or that its too many episodes to get through in one go. People always moan in here and the manga thread about having to wait, or something being too long or too slow, but this simple solution seems to never register to people.

The story nature of the typical long running shonen series actually clashes with their weekly nature (both chaptered and animated). The boring/slow complaints can usually be avoided by not insisting you keep up with it on a weekly basis. Take a break, read/watch something else for a bit, then come back to it when there is enough content to satisfy.

One Piece is 400 eps at the moment, but thats 5 "saga's", each of which breaks down further.

1-53 - East Blue,

54-78 The first chunk of Baroque works,

79-91 Drum Island,

92-130 Arabasta,

131-143 end of baroque works

144-152 Jaya

153-195 Skypiea

196-206 G8

207-219 Davy back

220-224

225-226 Foxy pirates again

227-263 Water 7

264-312 Enies Lobby

etc. Water 7/Enies Lobby is a perfect example of two intertwined stories that can be nicely seperate for the purpose of doing this. Essentially it's one big story, but theres a clear divide where it moves from one half to the other, and it worked well to watch them weeks/months apart. And they always spend 5minutes summarising at the beginning of the episode, so its not as if you'll forget what happened

Far easier to manage. Personally I got pissed off with waiting, and once started the arc thing when Naruto hit filler (not that naruto was the cause, it's just the first example where I actively started waiting). What can I say, it works for me. The "big three" all work better when done in blocks if you ask me, expecially as one fight can last a couple of months. For shorter shows, not so much of a problem.
