On a shitter note, I see they decided to make the last episode of Sengoku Basara DVD-only. So it won't be seen until January 2010. ;)

Finally getting around to watching Kaiji. Only 6 episodes in and it's ridiculous, but I mean that in a good way. It was part of the first season I started watching weekly shows, but I skipped it because I didn't think I'd be interested in a gambling show. But the favourable recommendations made me download it eventually. I was amazed when the game they play turned out to be

rock, paper, scissors, and I assume there will be something else after that as it is nearing the end of the game.

How do the TV seasons work out for anime over in Japan for long running shows? People have mentioned a few times how they insert filler into a show until more chapters of the comic are written but how does that work out with say One Piece when they are in the middle of a big battle? Does the series go on hold for a while?

"seasons" don't really apply to long running shows.

As for your specific type of example, Bleach did a entirely separate storyline halfway through a arc because of the time it was taking the manga too long to get anywhere. One piece did entire flashback eps at one point. Basically, they'll do anything except stop. They might skip a week or two, but this is generally down to Tv scheduling rather then a creative choice, and sometimes this leads to two eps being shown in one night.

If they go stop for more then a few weeks, people will lose interest. It might work for breaking up a show into 2x13eps rather then 1x26, but the show will be written for that. Long runners don't have that luxury and will make up new content rather then take a break.

So do shows like Bleach and One Piece run all year round?

All I want to know at the moment is how Asuka is introduced (tv style, manga style, or some other way), everything else can wait :)

I think we already know the direction the film in general is going to go roughly

it should pretty much confirm the alternate/repeated timeline thats been rumoured since 1.0

It's going to be ages before we get a watchable version, even if its a raw. IIRC 1.0 either didn't get one before the dvd release or it took ages

In other news I was planning to finish Captain Harlock today, but Firefox keeps throwing fits, so I've gone with finishing Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei instead. Add my plan to finish Angel Heart at work this week, and I should have 3 shows done shortly. Then I can start these new season shows I've been downloading :)

Who knows? I don't really want to speculate. I'd rather just leave myself open to surprises like with the first film which I really enjoyed.

Indeed, that one element aside (which I'm not really theorizing, its just the obvious thing im looking for), I agree

Watched that Afro Samurai last night, what a load of designed by committee pish.

It wasn't terrible or good, it was just sooooooo fucking average. It felt like they had done some sort of marketing thing and went 'oooh yeah they love that! Black hero! Wisecracking sidekick! gore! violence! robots!'

Now normally that wouldn't bother me of course, I like my incredibly shallow anime (for example the recent Sword Of The Stranger was ace) but I just found there to be no interest in this at all and I wanted to fucking KILL the little twat Sam Jackson was voicing. The whole time watching it I just thought of Kenshin or Samurai Champloo, man those series piss all over Afro. Will watch Afro Samurai Resurrection next but that probably won't be any better.

At least the game seems fun!

I wasn't a fan either was far too average thorughout. Still have Resurrection on the DVD shelf to watch so fingers crossed that redeems the series.

I watched MS Igloo and Gundam Evolve yesterday. Awesome.

Can you say a bit more about them?

I've always avoided them for two reasons - one, that the renders I've seen of some of the mobile suits change the designs in ways I particularly dislike:

rx-78-2.jpg

I've always disliked that RX-78-2 design.

That, and in general I have reservations about mecha anime made using CG. From the early stuff like G-Saviour all the way through to the few CGI bits of SEED Destiny, I've always found it quite crude.

Are they any good story-wise? I've been told that IGLOO is like a Zeon 08th MS Team.

CGI is only bad if it's mixed in with 2D (badly, at that). If it's 100% CG then I don't see the problem.

If it means anything, MS IGLOO had damn good CGI for its time, and MS IGLOO 2 (2008-?) has equally awesome CGI by today's standards. MS IGLOO 1 (6 episodes) focuses on the same Zeon R&D team, with each episode being fairly episodic with some things that link them to each other. It covers the beginning of the OYW right until the final battle, and I think it's brilliant. MS IGLOO 2 seems to be completely episodic with an extremely small connection (Both the main characters serve the same commanding officer), and focusing on the feddies on the European front fighting desperately and in vain against the overwhelming power of Zeon's Zakus. Storywise, as with all Gundam side stories or shorts, it's quite grimdark but quite emotively powerful, as well as giving you background information for stuff that goes on in the original Gundam and filling in some blanks. Also, you can't help but love the WW2 style propaganda TV broadcasts.

24mvvp4.jpg

As for Gundam Evolve, it's a series of shorts that are less than 10 minutes or 5 minutes each. The only long(ish) one is the re-imagining of 3 episodes of the original Gundam combined into 15 minutes, the only one to feature the RX-78-2 properly. The nature of it results in you not actually seeing the RX-78-2 up close for long enough so that I didn't even notice the design change until you pointed it out, actually. That one was actually amazing, the music and the general presentation just screamed "space is lonely, silent, depressing place".

But you really should watch them, they're not just for UC, they're for some of the AUs such as SEED, Wing, and G Gundam as well. Some humourous, some just plain interesting, like the one about why Char decided he was going to throw away his past and have the Hyaku Shiki remain gold instead of painting it red. There's a hilarious one which is quite obviously a parody of the Matrix where the Strike runs into a base and does ridiculously over the top acrobatics and matrixesque stunts. Another one features Amuro, the White Wolf of Solomon, and a newtype girl fight Ramiel in 3 Zeta Gundams in space while it attacks the Karaba base during the gryps war. There's one written by a now happy Tomino that features an alternate ending of Char's Counter Attack with sexy Nu Gundam fighting. Yeah, it's great.

Funimation are putting up One Piece for streaming. Starting from the first ep with a choice of sub or dub, and they will also be doing the current arc.
