What are the best Gundam series to watch and in which order or are they all self contained ?

Looking to grab a few series and I've no idea which ones are worth watching as unfortunately my Gundam experience is pretty much non existent.

(I might have asked this before but I'm stupid and forget easily)

Start with Gundam SEED Destiny, then Gundam Wing.

'Save the best till last'.

Grabbed and tweaked from an old post of mine. The ones marked in italics are Universal Century, which is the timeline of the original show and its sequels and spinoffs. The ones in bold are what's called Alternate Universe stories, which aren't related to the original show and can be watched separately without worry of missing anything.

The following are absolute must sees:

Mobile Suit Gundam - The first ever series, from 1979. A young boy called Amuro Ray ends up piloting the experimental mobile suit Gundam when the space colony he lives on is attacked by the Republic of Zeon. Amuro joins the Earth Federal Forces and clashes several times with Zeon ace Char Aznable.

Zeta Gundam - Basically The Empire Strikes Back of Gundam. Seven years after the original series, the Earth Federation has created a cruel and oppressive secret police called Titans to hunt down remnants of the Zeon forces.

A new cast and some returning characters form a resistance group called the AEUG to fight against the Titans.

Char's Counterattack - Big finale of the story arc set up by the above two series. Char Aznable declares war on Earth under the banner of Neo Zeon, and Amuro fights to stop him with the Nu Gundam.

Turn-A Gundam - If Miyazaki did a Gundam show, this'd be it. Space colonists from the Moon return to Earth, which has regressed to a time similar to the early 20th century. As the Moonrace declares war and their advanced technology looks set to crush any resistance, the ancient Turn-A Gundam is unearthed and used by the Earth Militia. It is piloted by Loran Cehack, a Moonrace recon scout sent to Earth a few years prior who uses the Turn-A Gundam to defend his adopted home.

If you liked those, then try out the rest. I recommend the following:

Gundam 0080: War In the Pocket - Six episode short story, about a boy who befriends mobile suit pilots from both of the warring factions from the first series.

The 08th MS Team - A side story to the original Mobile Suit Gundam, from the perspective of the common soldier rather than ace pilots.

Gundam 00: A stalemate between three warring factions is interrupted by the appearance of Celestial Being, an armed group who use four advanced Gundam mobile suits to intervene in conflict and eradicate war.

After War: Gundam X - Earth is decimated by dozens of space colonies dropped onto the planet, and gangs of survivors band together. It's pretty much Mad Max with Gundams, and my personal favourite. The lead character is Garrod Ran, a boy who hijacks a mobile suit with just a pistol and a home-made flashbang, steals a bounty hunter's prized possessions, finds a Gundam, wipes out an army with an experimental laser weapon, and puts his girlfriend into a coma. All this happens in the first two episodes.

I literally just finished Turn A. That was godly. My brain is just so wracked with emotion and post-series afterglow. I don't think you can fully appreciate it until you've seen most other Gundam series though, it's intended as a "finisher", and my god, it certainly does it well.

This is my personal Gundam tier list:

Animations only here, no novels/manga. Takes into account mech designs, fights, plot, music, and characters.

Top Tier:

0079 Movie Trilogy (Movies, 1983)

0080: War in the Pocket (OVA) (1989)

G Gundam (Marmite, though, you either love it or hate it) (1994) (TV series)

Turn A (2000) (TV Series)

High Tier:

Zeta (1985) (TV Series)

08th MS Team (1998) (OVA)

0083: Stardust Memories (1990?) (OVA)

Above Average Tier:

Char's Counter Attack (1988) (Movie)

MSG 00 (2007) (TV series)

Average Tier:

After War Gundam X (1995) (TV Series)

F91 (Movie) (1991)

Victory (TV Series) (1993)

Wing: Endless Waltz (Movie)

Low Tier:

ZZ (TV series)

SEED (TV series)

Wing (TV series)

Worst Tier:

SEED Destiny (TV series)

G-Saviour (Live action & CGI movie)

I really thought V Gundam was very good though. Never really like "tier" systems either. A bit to /m/ tastic for my liking.

Hmm, think of it as more of a "Piro's personal ratings". Even then, my favourites contain things from the middle tiers.

There's a few completed versions of the original gundam out there but I think they all have only english audio and no subs. However, Zeonic-corps have been doing it recently with the jpn audio and english subs and they're currently at episode 24 of 43. If you search for zeonic-corps on tokyotosho that should give you some torrent links to grab those episodes.

I found the former while having a look this morning too. However, the latter hasn't been working for me for the last couple of days. Is it just me or is it working for you?

I really do recommend you get the movie trilogy instead. It cuts out the filler and "monster of the week" type thing, and a lot of the absolutely horrid animation. It'll save you some time as well.

I personally prefer watching the full thing when it comes to any show so I'll wait for the subs to be completed and then do a run through of all the UC shows I've got waiting to be watched. That's the plan anyhow. Maybe I'll think differently if/when I watch it myself.

Tokyotosho? It works fine for me. Someone else had a problem with it and they managed to get on fine using the alternate site: tokyotosho.info rather than .com

Hmm, I'll wait till they get a bit nearer the end, thanks for the tip though

Yeah, caught it last November, so my memory's a little fuzzy, but it was pretty good for the most part although it sticks really closely to the series so it doesn't give itself enough time to end properly, and so you get a big mash up fight at the end to compensate. The new animated stuff is a bit few and far between tbh, but there is one absolutely amazing Imaishii explosion sequence at the end.

Be warned it's very seventies.

Doesn't bother me one bit, if anything I always think that adds to the charm <_< As long as it's fun I'll more than likely enjoy it. As has been said though it seems like a bit of a pain to find. I noticed that there were 12 volumes released in R1 dvd under the name Mobile Suit Gundam. Does this have english dub only or something ? (plus they seem to be OOP anyway)

I'll get at least a few of them Gundam series even if it turns out to be the alternate universe stuff. There's plenty to watch anyway :)

Yeah the DVD releases are dub-only. You're better waiting for Zeonic-corps releases. Sixty deuce has subbed the first 39 episodes as well, but the video quality isn't as good for most of the episodes (before he switched to the remastered DVDs) and he seems to have dropped the project now.

Aye, you're both right just did a bit of checking and no subbed versions at all. I might just go with the 3 films for now and if I enjoy them go for the full series when a full set of subbed episodes is available <_<

Let me know what you think of them. I watched the series dub, because I wanted to see the whole thing (and though it's dubbed, it is uncut at least). I'm curious about the films; I know they removed some things that Tomino didn't originally want in the series that were forced on him by Bandai's toy merchandising department (some of the Gundam's weapons for one). I do know that although it's obviously abridged, it does largely follow the story - conversely, I'm told the movies of Zeta changed things quite a bit.

Do not watch the Zeta movies unless you have seen the series. You will not understand what is going on, and if you have seen the series it will feel like a recap done extremely well, with a lot of missing things that aren't the bare bones of the plot, but a different ending. I loved them, though.
