I'm a big Evangelion fan, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who's watched little, if any anime (5 years ago sure, but not now)

What's changed in the last five years? I only ask because I'm relatively new to the world of anime and I watched Eva for the first time less than a year ago. It blew my little mind. :)

FLCL (Possibly the best six episodes of anything ever)

Gurren Legann (AKA "Evangelion For Men")

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Lots of talking, but offset with the coolest man with pipes for eyes ever conceived)

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (A generic high school anime if a generic high school anime was made wikked)

Cowboy Bebop (If you haven't seen this, you are, in the best case, only operating at a 70% smooth level)

All the Ghibli films of course, but especially Kiki's Delivery Service, which is the best film ever made.

Oh, and Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star are 1) Basically the same and 2) Are, I suspect, effective simulations of what it's like to have Down's Syndrome.

On a Gurren Lagann note, apparently the dvd for the movie will be out in a few days. Be interesting to see how they change it.

I've seen it and essentially; there's a lot of pacing issues, they don't have enough time so they stitch about 3 big fights into one giant one at the end, but in that big fight there is some nice new animation, so that's okay. It will make you want to watch the original again though!

Wat. Azumanga's a funny, charming show that's genuinely funny. Lucky Star just reeks of "this will appeal to weeaboo fucks."

I'm quite surprised you like Macross 7, Cack - the mechA were a bit turd, really. The VF-17 was a totally balls design, and the custom 19 was a bit... gay looking.

Technically there are three custom VF-19 models, as the UN Spacy variants weren't mass produced. The Fire Valkyrie had a face because Bandai wanted to cash-in on the Iron Leaguer craze. As for the VF-17, you're made of balls and your Mum is too.

Macross 7 is the weakest entry into the series really, mainly because it was twice as long as it needed to be narrative-wise.

God, I accidentally pressed the wrong button on a keyboard, how embarassing.

SARCASM FAIL

No way, man; the 14 looks miles better,

except for the horrible modified Deviln version

. The 17 looks like a fucking stealth fighter, and its stompy mode looks like AIDS.

I'm quite partial to the Thunderbolt after watching DYRL, too.

The Vampire was sexy, yeah. The Nightmare was meant to be a take on the F-117, in the same way a lot of other VFs are for other real world fighter planes. I really liked the designed and the toys were class.

As for the Thunderbolt, that was the VF-11B in Macross Plus. The VF-4 Lightning is probably what you're thinking of (but that only really appeared in Flashback 2012)?

Ahh - I thought it WAS the same one as the one from DYRL.

Naah man, it really gets incredible once they got into the swing of things. The first... 10 or so were hard-going, I'll admit. Then it all starts to kick off with what happens with Macross 5 and stuff. Awesomeness ensues.

Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea is finally getting a dvd release in Japan on July 3rd, about fucking time

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/rcms/anime/ponyo_...aomiyazaki.html

Was it not supposed to be getting a cinema release this month over here in the UK ? Haven't seen any sign of it so far

Since we're chucking out lists some of my favourites just for fun:

Hajime No Ipp - my favourite anime series ever

Anything by Rumiko Takahashi (though I haven't seen Inuyasha)

Cowboy Bebop

Rurouni Kenshin

Love Hina

Ah My Goddess!

Hare and Guu

Full Metal Panic

Ghost In The Shell (love both series)

Lupin III

I probably tend to drift a lot more towards the comedy/romantic comedy side of anime, even the really cheesy ones. Though saying that I'm watching Monster and it's absolutely fantastic and looking to become another firm favourite, Johann really is a nasty piece of shit.
