It wasn't in Macross. In Robotech, they destroyed SDF I (in the same attack that happens at the end of Macross, except in Robotech it didn't survive), quickly skipped over SDF II and it's off-screen destruction and went straight to SDF III actually existing too, again off-screen. All that in about 30 seconds, IIRC. The whole bit made no fucking sense.

It made as much sense as they could get from the limited animation available. They needed to make it sync up with Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, AKA Robotech: The Masters, which prominently features a mesa with three mountain-tops, and something buried underneath - so they said that one was the original Macross, one was SDF-II, which was destroyed at the end of Robotech: The Macross Saga, and the third one is the remains of the facility where SDF-III, the ship Rick Hunter (Hikaru) leaves earth on, was constructed. They explain it away by saying that the people of Earth were concerned that other space-faring races would come looking for the secrets of the battle-fortress, so as a short term measure they buried the remains of them (by this time it was already obselete anyway).

They tie all the series together by stating that all the mecha in Robotech are powered by a mysterious power source called "Protoculture", and the battle fortress contained the last protoculture generator in the known universe. Consequently the Zentraedi of (the villains from Macross) are sent to retrieve it, then their Masters (the villains from SDC Southern Cross) come to get it back in Robotech: The Masters, and the Masters' enemies, the Invid (the villains from Genesis Climber Mospeada) come to get it in Robotech: A New Generation.

The Shadow Chronicles further extends the saga using this plot device.

Despite the obvious issues with the storytelling, which don't sync up to be absolutely airtight, it is still very clever how they managed to weave a singular story from three totally unrelated shows, and the gaps are smoothed over quite well in the dialogue - that problem you mention JohnC is one of the worst-handled bits, because apparently they had originally intended to get Tatsunoko to animate them a "bridge" episode to go in place of Macross's ending, with several minutes altered footage to make things blend better, but their budget wouldn't stretch to it.

Thought I'd share this with you all.

Decided to revisit my GM Custom model to see if I can create a short animated piece; need to watch Gundam 0083 again to see how the Mobile Suit battle scenes are directed.

Neat. Does it have a special ability where it

self destructs after an important plot point

?

July would suggest new season to me. The word "airing" was used too. It's been confirmed on ANN too

Apparently someone tried seiyuu scouting Hirano Aya while she was out shopping

And Viz are going to stream some of their shows on Funimation's service o.O

That concludes Dandy Sephy's news report of the day :(

New episode of boobs..I mean Basquash is out. I'm pretty sure Dan is going to form his own team of awesome-o players to fight their way to the moon where they find that the leading sport is robots playing cricket and they then battle it out to prove some point.

Then the boobs-girl boob's then create their own gravity well and everyone dies.

Seems odd for Shaft to be doing a second series for Summer when they already have one planned(which sounds really awesome). Still, I'm not complaining.

Summer's definitely looking up now.

Edit: Hack, you missed the bit where they build a giant robot to use the moon as a basketball.

:) Yep,

it sucks what happened to South Burning. He's one of my favourite Gundam characters from UC, along with Kelly Layzner - neither of which come away well from the series. In fact, canonically, most of the characters from 0083 are either transferred to graveyard jobs after the series, and some are even executed.
