The new voice actors are a pain, and the shifted timeline is confusing (Hughes doesn't even live in a similar house, never mind Elicia having already been born before they meet him). I heartily approve of Yui for opening song though. Yui
Hell yes. Again's an awesome song.
Well it did have an epic bassline, but Yui ftw

I'm in my final year of studying animation at University and am trying to write my dissertation at the moment. "An analysis of 2D animation in the digital age", thinking at writing about topics such as how 2D animation isn't as commercially viable in the West as it is in Japan (probably an emphasis on feature films here), the difference of creative freedom given to directors and also the notion of mark making and gesture in drawing, how 3D animation lacks such qualities (vs how 3D animations retain these elements in new ways).

Most of the essay is just in planning stages and it would be nice to hear any opinions from you all, any topics or examples that you think would be good for me to research.

I've also been asking people if they prefer 2D or 3D animation and why, it would be nice to hear your thoughts.

Not a lot to say except I like how 3D is being integrated into 2D, but made to look 2D (as opposed to "realistic" or shiny 3D objects). Is that cell shading?. Mostly used for vehicles, such as cars, planes, spacecraft, etc. or used for moving around corridors and the like, although perhaps it often isn't used as well for that and can look bad.

I assume a lot of the "clean" looking new 2D animation is done digitally too, rather than flipping through pages to get the animation right.

One site that might be useful for you (and one I spent the last hour trying to remember the URL of!) is: http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/

Someone linked to that on asuki when I was really into anime a few years ago and started to take more of an interest in the animation side of things. There's a wealth of articles on there and the guy seems to know his stuff. It's where I first started to hear of the likes of Iso, Imaishi and Yuasa, plus it lead me to other lesser known shows which I've tracked down to watch. I've always planned to go back and read some more of the stuff on there because I found some of it quite interesting (particularly some of the history of japanese animation). Maybe it will give you some inspiration. Hope it helps.

Ah, interesting you brought that up. I've written a little on that subject - whereas 3D animations are usually animated on 1s (a new image for every frame) 2D animation is usually animated on 1s, 2s and 3s etc (a new drawing every 1,2 or 3 frames) depending on what's going on and the budget. In 2D animations this can look natural, in 3D animations this can look jarring or sluggish, however 3D animations usually use this method to blend in with 2D. A recent example of this would be the Big Foot car things in Basquash which are obviously 3D but are often animated on 2s or 3s in an attempt to blend in with the characters.

Thankyou for the link, I know I have seen this site before some time ago when looking up Yuasa's works but I shall take a proper look at it now!

Depending on the quality and type of animation used for each, I'd probably favour 2D more than 3D. I think it allows a lot more leeway in how you can animate with various different styles. When I think of 3D, I tend to think of stuff like Pixar and the like's stuff where's it's made to look realistic(ish) but never reaches there and that jarrs with me a lot of the time since it's a lot more obvious that's something's wrong.

I've lost track of the point I was trying to make.

Well, have the full length FMA OP anyway.

Started watching Monster and it's a bloody brilliant show, I heard it was good but really surprised at how excellent it is so far. Fantastic stuff and highly recommended. Ippos also as much fun as ever and it pains to wait for each episode. Looks like we're getting close to Takamuras world title fight as well, can't bloody wait.

It's pretty close, all things considered. There's a lot of things changed, though.

And no tits

But spider robots crushing buildings. FUCK YEAH.

Then the sequel came along and dumped any similarity to the manga whatsoever, choosing instead to indulge in John Woo's fucking dove fetish.

By having ROBOT. ASSASSIN. FUCKING. SPY. DOVES.

The man is AWESOME at ruining potential good things.

See also: Mission Impossible II.

The sequels not that bad, still a lot of fun to be had. Not as good as the first one though and agreed with the doves being over the top and Mission Impossible 2, though it's still better than the awful first MI. Jim Phelps a traitor my fucking arse. I am a Woo fanboy so can find good stuff in most of his films, except Paycheck, he made it very very hard for me to like that one. Thankfully he seems to be back on track with the Red Cliff films though.

I know when it comes to opinions I'm near enough the opposite of you with a lot of things in terms of anime so I'll shut up, except Macross Plus, which is fucking awesome  Seen the start of the original Macross series too and it's looking goooooooooooooood. Monsters eating up my anime viewing at the minute, such a good show.

That reminds me, is the new FMA anime much cop ? Didn't even realise it had started airing.

It should get awesome once it's past the first 25 eps or so and people realise what I've been preaching about for ages.

Good stuff. I'll probably leave it for a good while until there's a load of episodes out. I've learned this the hard way with the new series of Ippo, I just can't stand the weekly wait and it would kill me for FMA

I don't reckon it'll take as long as that unless they add lots of filler. I mean, the plot starts to change slightly at around chapter 20 ish when they

get back to their teacher with no organs. After that it's the shit with greed and regaining Al's memory.

The only downside will be later on when we have to watch

Roy Mustang's fight with Lust being voided by fucking Lockon Stratos

.

Is Battle Angel worth watching? After a look around, I see it is based on the first 2 volumes of a 9 volume manga. Is it horribly incomplete or is it a complete enough story on its own?

Skip it. It's... okay for what it is, but just read the manga, which is great.

Except for the sequel. Which is fucking awful.
