I don't particularly want to get into watching the series because there's about 72346 episodes and it still hasn't finished, I'll just try getting those films for now.

Do what I did and watch it on an arc by arc basis. The length of the show is clear, but it does break down nicely into smaller chunks if you are "catching up".

http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Episode_Guide should provide a decent idea. A few 50ish ep arcs, but mixed in amongst others of smaller size

Can someone recommend an anime for a new viewer? I want something that is good and mainstream nothing too obscure, also I like science fiction. So far I have seen Akira and Vampire Hunter D. So, what else should I watch?

Oh and what are the best anime sites on the web? I'm looking for the rllmuk or NeoGaf equivalent in anime.

Strike Witches.

The anime community generally takes some getting used to, I advise to steer clear unless you're ready to accept the consequences....

Seriously though, agreed with Ryan here, go with Cowboy Bebop, it's like the Mona Lisa of anime by now. Great stuff. Planetes is amazing too.

Oh, and definitely Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. If you find it a bit too silly for you....

More general recommendations:

Death Note - Thriller/Paranormal

Detroit Metal City - Death Metal Comedy

Full Metal Panic (seasons 1 and 2 + comedy spinoff) - Mecha/MilitaryAction/Comedy/Drama

Haruhi - Paranormal/Comedy

Kaiji - Gambling/Thriller

Kara no Kyoukai - Paranormal

Macross Franchise - Sci-fi/Singing/Romance/MISSILES AND GERWALK MODE

Gundam Franchise - Sci-fi/War Drama/Mech Battles

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Scifi/Mecha/Mindfuck

Rurouni Kenshin - Samurai Action/Adventure

^_^

I'm still completely lost as to how those are supposed to attract people. Both nearly put me right off

These are the sorts of things to start with:

I fail to understand how anyone can dislike Bebop, let alone put them off.

One Piece is ridiculously long. I read up to chapter 70 and something like 5% of the main cast had been introduced by then.

It's long, but the episodes contain on average 15mins new content, so you can get through 4 of them in just over an hour.

..and it's well worth watching, it's one of the best series going..

Hmm, during Enies lobby this is certainly the case (with 7 eps of filler/flashback across it's 50ish eps). Can't speak for the rest as it's been ages since I saw pre-Water 7.

Yeah. It's definitely the case during Enies Lobby but I don't remember the pre-Water 7 stuff being that short in terms of new content per episode.

Just looked through some of the memorable moments in One Piece on youtube and the like after the recent discussion in the thread. I'd forgotten how epic it could be. So many brilliant moments/standoffs/fights ^_^

It's very "marmite" humour wise. You can either appreciate the humour or you'll hate it or find it dull. Personally I like it. What's not to like about high school antics involving Freddie Mercury, a gorilla and a robot in a school of delinquents. But that's just my taste.

Sample of the humour;

Personally I think it's the style of humour that makes it what it is, it's simply unique in that respect. Like when Chopper and Luffy meet Sogeking and think he's a hero thats appeared

they get him to sign autographs while the rest of the room can see that its blatatly Usopp

Saji: Louise..

Louis: Saji...

Andrei: Mother...

Soma: Colonel...

Allelujah: Marie...

Lockon: Anew...

Tieria: Veda...

Setsuna: GUNDAM!

I love this anime

Aside from the hilarious lolz at the end (which was still good even though we're able to laugh at it), it was an excellent episode.

Anything Studio Ghibli related is worth your time and should be first on your list.

I would highly recommend Hajime No Ippo, it's a boxing series and is well worth watching with great characters that you all root for. There's no villain present either, all the boxers have their own reasons for fighting with near enough everyone well developed.

It depends on your sense of humour but anything by Rumiko Takahashi is well worth watching such as Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku. Maison Ikkoku is probably the best developed one in terms of characters and a storyline which lasts the whole series whilst Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura are more episodic and very very funny.

Wings Of Honneamise is a MUST, one of the best anime films ever made.

Rurouni Kenshin is also fantastic and well worth your time.

Cowboy Bebop - another one of the best anime series ever made and very easy to get into.

Everything Ghost In The Shell is awesome, but it can be pretentious wankery at times though I love all that shit. I love all the series and movies to bits but it isn't really for everyone. Tachikomas rule.

Akira's another one which even if you end up not liking is worth watching, it's a classic that deserves a watch at least once.

There's loads of others I can't think of offhand, but out of everything I would especially recommend the Studio Ghibli films.

Watched One Piece the movie 6 and enjoyed it, full of fun and some lovely animation. HOWEVER I've just been trying to watch the 9th film, I got half way through and gave up.

The 6th is the one which Imaishii (Gurren Lagan) did right? I've been meaning to watch that for ages....

Episode of Chopper Plus isn't it?

I guess! They were on some ice island and the storytelling/animation was pretty awful. They even replaced the characters with 3D models in some shots thinking no-one would notice. From what I gather the end of the film looks lovely so I might just skip ahead and watch that!

I think so, the animation style was very awesome. I recommend! Get ittttt
