You're going to love Macross. It's aged so damn well.

I've always liked the look of it, just one of those I've never got round to seeing. I did love the Macross Plus OVA and thought that was terrific but that's about it on my knowledge of anything Macross related.

Well, Plus is a damned hard act to follow, really. It's one of the finest OVAs ever created, without a doubt. I didn't see the original until recently, though, and totally fell in love with it. Once you're done with that, grab Do You Remember Love and Flashback 2012 (best half hour EVER).

Err, and maybe avoid Macross 7. It really isn't much good at all.

Naruto and Bleach would be acceptable if they weren't long and drawn out so the people involved get more money, weren't full of horrible art and animation, plot holes, bad characters.

You could point Naruto out for dodgy animation certainly (it has a history of saving money wherever possible if theres a big fight/sequence coming up), but you absolutely cannot aim that at Bleach, which has consistently good animation. And asking a shounen fighter not to be drawn out is like asking Meh to shut up about Bible Black - it's the nature of the beast

The problem is that people watch it on a weekly basis and it doesn't occur to them that it takes time to tell the story (mostly due to the nature of the genre and being an adaption). This is why I watch long shounen shows like Bleach, Naruto and One Piece on an arc-by-arc basis. You don't get the problem of it being drawn out because you can get through a 30-odd ep arc in a week or two instead of 8months. these problems affect all long running shounen manga adaptions and it is never going to change as long as they are popular.

Is it true with the Bleach anime that after the Soul Society arc for the next 40 - 50 episodes it has Ichigo having the shit getting kicked out of him basically for the whole time without winning a fight ? A mate of mine ranted about how terrible it was and I still haven't watched any Bleach past that arch, sounds like I haven't missed too much.
All those episodes after Soul Society are typical horseshit fillershit, and didn't occur in the manga at all.

It then carries over some stupid cunting soft toys like Kon over to the next arc. Who don't exist in the manga at all.

It's a horrible mess of a show.

Nice OPs, though.

So the Arrancar and Hueco Mundo eps are filler then too? be more specific when you are going to be a whiny bitch :) The crazy thing is that the Bleach filler isn't even that bad. Naruto's batch of filler between the end of Part 1 and Shippuden was fairly dodgy because it was all randomly created storys, many of which were one offs with a couple of arcs - there was no planning. The Bleach Filler, and the Shippuden filler are all properly written storys and are perfectly watchable. It's just whiny cunts on the internet who read the manga every week moaning because they think they are owed something.

Frankly, theres too many ungrateful cunts these days, and people are even taking issue with Crunchyroll giving them FREE SAME WEEK STREAMS. Speaking of Crunchyroll, out of the middle of nowhere there list of free anime added Gintama this week as well as two shows that are literally "amazing scenes"

I'm talking about Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999. Now, Live-Evil only finished subbing Harlock this week and have already removed it from their site. they also removed GE999, which had taken them FIVE YEARS to do 30 eps. Basically their subbing attempt was a complete joke (and why I stopped bothering after 10 eps) and Toei are giving us 2 eps a week subbed, for FREE. There is a downfall, GE999 (and presumably other shows - although Shippuden is a worldwide deal) is region locked to North America.

But because I'm a kind bastard, you can use This proxy

edit: direct proxy doesn't work, it will claim your flash is outdated even if its not. You'll have to use the link and manually enter crunchyroll with it

I for one welcome out new streaming overlords , and I'm glad I can finally watch Ge999 at a decent release rate! (one year for the whole series as oppossed to five years for a third of it...)

The reason people hate such filler is because it doesn't advance the actual storyline ONE LITTLE BIT. It's called FILLER for a reason, and serves no purpose other than to stall until there's enough actual story to make proper episodes from.

It is a necessary evil, but it's still SHIT.

A fair number of complaints I've read about Crunchyroll have been less to do with the fact that it's streaming and more to do with that their encodes are utterly gash making them horrible to watch (I can't comment since I've not seen them). People are questioning as to what's the point of paying out money to download a version that's terrible to watch.

Personally, I dislike the Crunchyroll site more down to how it's run rather than the idea itself. I like the idea of being able to have a downloadable version of a series for the cost of a small subscription a month but not if it's going to such shit quality that I may as well be watching a bootleg vhs or stuck on a site which resembles a 12 year old's myspace page.

Edit: Argh I can't explain it well. I'll fix it after I've woken up.

Well the shippuden I reported on a few days ago was great, even in full screen (22" lcd monitor). I've not tried anything else, but Im planning to watch GE999 this weekend so I can report back (and that will be going to a 37" lcd, so it will be a decent test). The complaints I saw were about them killing fansubbing, and whining because they turned into a legal site and so removed the blatant piracy (ignoring that they were getting anime as it airs, free. legally). Because apparently there is a lack of illegal files on the internet.... Basically the idiots Dattebayo get so much fun out of winding up

The site isn't amazing (the comments for example as you say), but I'll be watching everything in fullscreen, so its not that big an issue

Depends. If you're going into thinking it's going to be similar to the others, then you won't get too much enjoyment out of it. Like going into G Gundam with an anally retentive mood expecting everything to confirm to ultra realistic standards because obviously you can't have a good story unless it would happen that exact way in real life.

Just tell the part of your brain that is screaming "this is stupid" that it's stupidly awesome and you'll have a great deal of fun watching it.

Well yeah, obviously. It's still terrible though. Unlikeable characters, horrible music, awful style. Yuck. IMO. If it didn't have the Macross name attached to it, I wouldn't have watched any more than the first episode.

Sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome Fire Bomber are and how great their songs are.

Just finished watching The Little Norse Prince there now, really fun film and nice to see that even with their early work Isao Takahata and Miyazaki were still doing good films! Obviously didn't have the highest budget as even though it's really well animated at times a few scenes are slide shows rather than fluid animation (which is down to budget I assume). Saying that it was released in 1968 and does look really good for animated films from that time period.

It's funny you're talking about ungrateful cunts in one paragraph and then I read the next paragraph and I'm sat there thinking "Well, why didn't you try and help then?" rather than being an armchair observer (unless you did, in which case pardon my ignorance). I thought their attempt was relatively good. It wasn't by any means an ideal schedule for subbed episodes to be released but they still attempted it which I at least admire. There's usually a reason why not many people pick up and continue subbing shows which are 50+ eps and especially ancient shows like GE999 and Harlock. It's one of the reasons I don't tend to start on those shows unless they're completed. Also they finished Harlock last week

That said, I'm excited by the move (finally get to see them all with any luck) but it's being kept in check until I see what the video quality etc is like. I hope they give the shows the care and attention that I feel they deserve, which is something I felt L-E did to an extent. I have yet to view anything on crunchyroll but like Mr. Jeff I prefer being able to have subs available in a separate file to download which I can view in my media player of choice at my own leisure and recently of course I've gotten used to getting hi-res video to go along with them. I would even pay a small fee on a subscription basis, like Jeff suggested, for the privilege of doing this. I'm a hoarder by nature so that suits my sensibilities. I'm not going to rubbish the attempt though, after all they can always improve the quality of streams later on I suppose (if they aren't already good enough) and as was the case with the L-E subs I'll take something over nothing any day. Let's hope other companies start following suit and put up more of the classics. I'm primarily thinking of Lupin III and Yawara here

Oh and before I sound like an ungrateful cunt, thank you for those proxy links they should come in handy when the time comes

If it has music, mecha and a romance story as key plot elements, it sounds like a Macross to me

It also has no budget, bad art, and he pilots his YF-19 with a fucking GUITAR.

It's beyond stupid.

And that fucking song he never stops singing. AGHHH

Well the problem with Live Evil is that they try subbing 10 shows at once, then don't get anywhere fast with them. For example the same people work on all the Matsumoto series - but as they were working on 2 or more series none of them got done (well, apart from Harlock :P). Basically Live Evil try to do too much at once. I'm not ungrateful towards Live-Evil (far from it), but a group of their size and status could have done a lot better or at least put the project on hold until they could sub at a realistic pace.

As for Yawara, the first box is out from AnimEigo, who know a thing or two about completing long shows (UY being 50volumes and all)

Fair enough. I was under the impression they did put it on hold. Unless you mean regarding the statuses on their site.

Yeah but as far as I know they don't ship it internationally. Something to do with not having the license to do it internationally but just in the US/Canada. I checked before when they first announced preorders for it. I suppose I could try harder to look for the first box as it may be available on places like ebay. It's just I'd prefer not to have to jump through all these hoops to get it (if you can even consider ebay a hoop  ).

Just got to the end of the Macross arc of Robotech tonight. Overall I've enjoyed it, despite the obvious cuts and edits. I'm really curious as to just how they managed to connect the three series that make up the full set, which will probably become apparent within the next few episodes.

I should also state that I've loved the design. Colourful, bright, at times poorly animated and kitsch. It's great.
