Just re-watching Appleseed: Ex Machina. Enjoying it more the second time around.

The art style is less grating now I know what to expect and the story is a straightforward adventure yarn, John Woo style.

I think the thing that annoyed me most was the fact that one of the main plots was identical to Dr Who series 2. Although I doubt Appleseed was doing the ripping off.

That looks amaze. It makes me want to watch the anime...

How similar is it to the manga, how many episodes? Good?

Did you finish the manga? I've finished the anime, but I'm only on vol21 of 28 (which is partly flashback iirc). The anime goes into filler as soon as the Kyoto arc finishes, and was then pulled off the air due to low ratings before they could start the Jinchuu arc (they were waiting for enough material in the same vein as Naruto and Bleach do every 6 months). Working on the episode list on wikipedia recently suggests that although the Tokyo arc has a few eps of filler, the vast majority of the Tokyo and Kyoto arcs are pretty much identical

Tokyo arc=27eps

Kyoto arc=34 eps

Filler=32eps (after the first 7episodes of filler, the studio changed from Studio Gallop to Studio Dean)

Then you've got Tsuiokuhen a.k.a Samurai X: Truth and Betrayal, which is the Flashback from the Jinchu arc (told entirely as flashback, unlike the manga there is no "modern" characters bookending it or as intermission). Then that was followed by Seisōhen a.k.a Samurai X: Reflections, which is a non-manga story that is told from Kaoru's POV and is set both during and after the series (my or may not have "clips" from Jinchu. I've actually not seen it despite me owning it on dvd at one point! :) Theres also a non-manga movie that isn't anything special iirc.

I really don't remember the quality of the filler, but Kenshin was one of the first shows I watched (possibly in the first 5?) and so it was a good 7 years ago. I watched the Tokyo and Kyoto arcs a couple of times, and they were pretty good, the Kyoto arc speaks for itself.

It's also true! It's an enjoyable show, but it's not exactly faultless. The last ep was clearly there to fill a space and not because the actual content warranted it

note: I'm referring to the last episode on dvd, which I gather was ep9 in the "broadcast order"

You watched them in the wrong order. Well done on ruining the experience for yourself! :)

It's definitely the weakest episode - and not to sound like a No More Heroes apologist (Suda meant for the city to suck!) - the original author of the novels wrote that episode and apparently wanted to show people "What the SOS-brigade would be like without Haruhi around" - the answer is - kinda boring.

I was told by you lot to watch them in DVD order :)

no you weren't!

I can 100% promise you everyone here would have recommended broadcast order, I remember doing so several times at least - the balance between funny/serious episodes is better that way and the mystery of the overacrhing plot is far better paced. Still, I hope you enjoyed it overall.

:) That last bit almost makes me want to see it.

I had heard one of the Macross shows was bad and I think it was that one. Was there something about it later being sort of taken out of the normal Macross universe and was placed in an alternate universe? So it exists on its own timeline and not part of the "real" timeline.

That'll be Macross II. It's a fucking masterpiece compared to 7, but it's understandable why they ripped it out of the continuity. Macross Frontier seems to be what they would've liked to have done with 7, if they actually had a budget and a decent storyline.

I mean, the bad guys have transformable planes too, for fucksakes. And they're like SPIRIT VAMPIRES or something. It's utterly fucked off its tits in so, so many ways. Max looks about 25, and Exedol - oh, poor Exedol - is a fucking HEAD.
