I've just really started getting into Macross F now that it's finished (I like to marathon) and I have a couple of questions since I've never watched any series before (I will be watching plus... probably later today). I'm up to episode 12.

There are a bunch of things I'm wondering if they had any significance in earlier series...

Firstly, what's the story with the film that Ranka plays Mao in? is it some kind of post-modern reference to an earlier Macross series or film?

The song that ranka sings in the pageant... they announced it was an oldie... so, was it a song from a previous macross?

And was I supposed to recognise the red macross VF-whatever that the cyborg guy uses?

Well, anyway, I'm really enjoying it and if Zappster still visits here, good job on QCing in the AonE-Gekkostate-Menclave releases.

The 'movie' episode is based on Macross Zero, and in fact in the closing credits thanks the Macross Zero team for their help. The feature-length SDF Macross movie does a similar thing, with the original series being the obvious focus. The song that Ranka sings is a cover of "My Boyfriend is a Pilot" from the orginal series, sang by Lynn Minmay. I actually far prefer the new version, as it's over-used to a ridiculous extent in the original show. The red VF-whatever I haven't seen enough of Frontier to comment on, but it's not in the original shows whatsoever, and I reckon is linked to the SDF-2 Megaroad that apparently vanished shortly into its journey to the centre of the galaxy (I could be wrong, as my Macross knowledge is a bit shakey, only now getting to the end of the original, and with all of Macross7 to go through once that's done :))

I fucking love Macross, me. Somebody drag the Cackmeister in here.

Then buy Macross Zero, which is a prequel, and shows off some lovely CGI and bat-shit mental people.

Did this ever get released on DVD or was it a BluRay only job? I've been meaning to buy this for years, if only for the completely insane dog-fighting scenes.

I'd add that even I've seen Gurren Lagaan, except I've only seen half of it. Fucking mkv files. ;)^_^

Apparently the new VLC is supposed to be much better with soft subs - also: have you tried this version of MPlayer?

That site doesn't seem to display at work. I suspect I need to find a PC or just bite the bullet and upgrade to an Intel-powered Mac laptop so I can use XBMC (?) on it. This issue has also prevented me from watching Kamichuu!

Incidentally, is Kamichuu a series worth buying, because I could always just get the DVDs. GL is getting bought for sure, but I'm waiting for a boxed set.

I really enjoyed Kamichu but it's not for everyone. It's a kind of teenage romance series mixed with comedy and the gods premise it has. Could be a bit too cloyingly sweet and cute if you're not used to watching stuff like that. I can't really think what to say about it so perhaps your best bet is trying to watch the first ep on a streaming site or something.

Edit: Also, it does have the best blush faces I've ever seen.

Guys, could you recommend me, say, 5 anime films I should watch?

I like sci-fi/robot/action type stuff (Ghost in the Shell) rather than the fantasy (3 x 3 eyes or whatever) stuff.

I've barely watched any. I tell you what I absolutely adored, though, as far as manga comic goes: Dirty Pair and.....some thing with ''boomers'' and this group of bad-ass chick ins power suits running around slicing them up.

eech, not so good with films but in terms of series - Code Geas: Leouch of the Rebellion is as good as anything I've seen pretty much ever. Great characters and plenty of Big Robot fun. Amusing in that "Britania" are the bad guys who've occupied Japan!

One good film (even though it's really a series) Is Macross Plus, 4 eps or one cut down film I enjoyed both

Spriggan was cool, very good action anime, vaugly futuristicy, excellent visuals

Cowboy Beebop - the movie, if you've not already seen it

I'm sure others will be able to recommend more,

You must've watched some dire trampy shit if you think Code Geass is even remotely good. Worst execution of a fantastic premise ever.

But then you mention Macross Plus, and all is forgiven.

Spriggan's a bit shit, though.

Meh, what would you selection be, then?

And does anyone know i'm talking about re the manga comic with ''boomers'' and some chicks flying around in powered armour in a future Tokyo?

Because it was fucking amazing and the definition of right up my street.

Bubblegum Crisis?

Film-wise, I'm not sure but I think the first two Patlabor films are supposed to be good. I think the general consensus is the 3rd film isn't as good as the other two. Should get round to watching them myself. There's also Sword of the Stranger which a very enjoyable samurai film which can be easily torrented. Also, not so much mechs or action but The Girl Who Leapt Through Time would count as sci-fi I think?

And obviously Macross Plus is a must watch.

Yeah bubblegum crisis sounds more like what you're looking for. Another sci-fi one that involved power armor that was alright was Virus Buster Serge, very reasonably priced if your purchasing and not downloading

EDIT: also Meh if you can suggest something that was better than Code Geas i'm pretty interested, one prob with internet Anime hunting is knowing what to look for

As Mr.Jeff suggests, get The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. It's wonderful.

The Patlabor movies he suggests are also pretty darn good, though they're appreciated more if you've seen the original show (+OVA?) that preceeds them. Patlabor 2 in particular is quite awesome. Just don't expect 'splosions in it much.

For me, though, Macross Plus is untouchable. It's simply perfect. Even the dub's good, for fucksakes. Go get the box-set, even though the movie version included is a VHS transfer.

If you liked Ghost in the Shell, I'd recommend picking up the first series of it. Just don't touch the po-faced shit-heap that is the second season.

And don't touch GitS2. Honestly. Don't.

Eureka Seven. There's something to start you off with :(

Oh, and Bible Black.

Liked?

The hairs on my neck were standing up during the end sequence.

The buzz-whine of the tanks legs, the music, the vicious buzz of the cannons......ace.

Then get the first season of Stand Alone Complex, the GitS series. It'll be cheap as chips by now. The music's very different (being done by Yoko Kanno, who I previously mentioned does the fantastic Macross Plus score), and it's decidedly slower paced, being more a detective story than the movie, but it's nonetheless actually a far more interesting take on the GitS universe. And briefly features Kusanagi's two lezzer mates.

Just don't touch 2nd GIG unless you like to sit there stroking your beard while supping tea and speaking to boring cunts.

I *hate* Mamoru Oshii's works post-Patlabor 2, and the cunt's fingerprints are all over it. (Also see: Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. I'm all for the whole deeper meaning of things, but this takes the absolute piss on a grand scale, and isn't entertaining in the slightest. Unless you stroke your beard daily.)
