having watched the last few minutes of Geass....

I suspect he isn't dead at all. I THINK he may have gotten C.C's code or whatever that Charles was also after to make him immortal. It may also explain the whole memory bleed into the Nunnally.... which was rather odd at the time. Also C.C's tone at the end suggested she was possibly speaking to the Guy controlling the horses....

I like this idea. Just finished myself. I'd like to join Jack and Piro with

ARGH OHGI DIE YOU CUNT. Mildly annoyed about Kallen as well. "Oh zero's dead and I loved him. Oh well, now onto Gino my new fuck buddy". Overall though, quite pleased with the ending despite the ambiguity with the final scene. It finished the the complete randomness of a series quite nicely even though we still have the questions of what happened with ohgi, villeta and the maid, and how Diethard got beaten up.

Wouldn't say it's the greatest series ever but for sheer randomness and silliness with it's plot it's enjoyable enough.

Now onto Gundam 00 and I'm predicting it'll be stupid as well. Oh and the first ep to be a recap in traditional Gundam style(says I having only watched GS and GSD).

Emm...

Ohgi is the Japanese Prime Minister or something. He was the one 'Zero' and Nunnally met with at the end. Villeta marries Ohgi, its their wedding picture you see..... The maid, I dunno. and wasn't Diethard killed when Lelouch cornered Schneizel?

I mean earlier in the series.

There was a scene where the maid catches Ohgi and Viletta together and she throws knives at him and they both go over the cliff. Never explained what happened after that. In another episode, just after Zero leaves the Black Knights, Diethard's talking with everyone about what to do about Zero. They change scenes then they come back to them and Diethard has bandaids and marks on his face as if someone has beat him up.

Edit: Also

quite like to know what Anya sees when Orange de-geass's her as well. Sound stages and picture stages are all well and nice but not if they leave giant holes in the series.

Ahhhhhh

In other news, One Piece has sort of grown on me. Up to ep 7 now.

One thing I thought was weird about MF was how they

just go and land all their shit and start a new civilisation on someone elses planet

Yeah, it did seem a little odd.

I imagine it's because that was their intention before they realised the Vajra were alright folk, and they just set down temporarily

Macross (or the Robotech version you got) would be the first. Macross Plus is some years later. Macross Frontier is some years later still. They are in the same universe, but the stories are not directly following from each other, other than following the course of history. You will get an occasional mention of something from a previous series, but nothing major, IIRC.

I really should watch Plus again. It was the first I saw and it was ages ago. My memory of it is a little hazy now.

Oh, fuck. You bought Robotech Macross. Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck. Throw it away. NOW. Horrible bastardized american chop-shop job. THROW IT AWAY.

Then download a batch torrent of Macross. Just Macross. Robotech is BAD.

Then drown in the loveliness of early 80's anime, when cel animation was king.

Then BUY. Yes, BUY Macross Plus. It's quite simply one of the most incredible OVA/movies of all time, and I've watched it easily more than 70 times. No shit - it's that good.

Then DOWNLOAD Macross7. It'll never, ever be released in an English-speaky country, mainly because it's tied up in all sorts of legal bullshit.

Then buy Macross Zero, which is a prequel, and shows off some lovely CGI and bat-shit mental people.

Then we come to Frontier. Which is just fucking amazing.

Robotech fucks with things to make it fit into the other two shows they smashed onto it, though. Names are changed, all sorts of shit. It's bad, bad, bad.

YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES

Macross Plus is incredible. Great story, memorable characters, some of the most unbelievable 2D animation and an incredible score by Yoko Kanno. Seriously, everyone who likes anime should have this, Akira and Patlabor 1 and 2 on DVD as a minimum. :D

You know, I ripped the first 2 DVDs onto my iPod. I think I would reckon it's shit if I was sitting down on the sofa looking for some proper entertainment. However, I watched #1 and #2 on the way into/back from work today on the train and they seemed to work quite well in that format.

I think I know what you mean though. It all seems to be very sickly sweet with a generous helping of gung-ho-top-gun-hi-fives. Still, they did seem to pass an otherwise boring train ride quite well.

All noted, and thanks for the info. I was looking for Macross Plus when I was in town last week but nowhere out of about 5 stores seemed to have it.

EDIT: Just sourced it from LoveFilm. Should get it this week.

BTW, what's an OVA?

No, no, I don't think you follow quite what he meant. To some anime fans, Robotech is a shining symbol of everything that is wrong with Western anime adaptations.

Robotech was "created" because the American TV company Harmony Gold wanted to release a kid's sci-fi animated TV series. To this end, they considered their options, and decided to go with buying a foreign series and rejigging it for an American audience.

Unfortunately, anime series didn't tend to have enough episodes to run in syndication in the states (they needed at least 52 episodes, i.e. one a week for a year, or something like that). Super Dimension Fortress Macross, like most anime series, had around 26.

Macross worked though for HG, as Transformers were still reasonably contemporary, so they really wanted to bring another transforming robot series to American television. In order to do it, they sent a scout over to Japan to find more material for them to pad Macross out with. They found two series, "Southern Cross" and "Genesis Climber Mospeada".

Using the editing equivalent of a butcher's knife, and severe re-scripting in the dub, they wrought out a 3-season story, with SDF Macross, Mospeada and Southern Cross becoming Robotech: The Macross Saga, A New Generation and The Robotech Masters. The key thing to remember though is that these series had no storyline link in the Japanese originals; they were totally different. They covered up the differences in animation by making them different seasons, set quite a while apart, whilst cleaving out parts of the story to cut the length and make it kiddie-friendly. They even changed the lighting in some scenes and the colour palettes to make it more bright, and recoloured characters' hair to write in that certain characters across the original, unrelated material were in fact related.

Depending on how you see it, it was either an amazing job in the editing suite to bring anime to American telly for the first time in a series format. Alternatively, it shit on the brilliance of the original series and forever set a precedent which gives American companies license to butcher anime.

I'm divided over it, because I did like it as a kid, but some people really despise it.

BTW, what's an OVA?

It's a term used to describe anime that was neither created for showing specifically on television (i.e. it isn't a series) but it wasn't made for cinema release/isn't a "feature" either (so it isn't technically a movie).

Often they are short series with several episodes that form a continuous story arc. Macross Plus is an ideal example.

Is that the one that was a 4 part OVA and they also made a film from the OVA ? I think there was a dvd set from Manga with both bundled together.

If that's the one then it was fucking awesome though I've never seen any other Macross, the original series is called Super Dimension Fortress isn't it ? Must try and track that down.

Also. is the original Gundam only available with an english dub or something ? I've been looking for the original series for a while but even retail wise it seems to be dubbed only.

Oh no, I did kinda pick up on his hate for it. I should have been a bit more clear. I'm just talking about having the series on my iPod for a bit of entertainment. To take it as-is, if you like. Thanks to you guys, I now know it's a bastardisation but surely I can still watch it in pocket format, enjoy it for what it is but still accept that it's not a proper representation of the Macross universe?

You guys are giving me great info as to what's really good in the Anime world (which I'm really grateful for). Surely I need to experience a bad one so I can have a balanced view myself? :D

Gundam 0079 (i.e. the first Gundam series) is available in dub, if you want it. It's not bad, well, certainly similar to Gundam Wing - but the slightly more serious source material means that it works a bit better.

Bear in mind First Gundam is very difficult going if you're not committed; it looks distinctly Sealab2021 today. It IS brilliant though; the story is incredible.

Yeah, the DVD release is dub-only. There are fansubs, although not of the complete series. One group (sixtydeuce) has been subbing it for ages and reached episode 39. The releases though (although they were infrequent before) seem to have stopped. The quality isn't as good as it could be as when he started the new remastered DVDs didn't exist and so he only switched it those for the more recent releases. Also Zeonic-Corps have released the first 11 episodes subbed using the new remastered DVDs as the source. They plan to have the complete thing subbed by April, whether or not they will though I don't know.

And while we're talking about robots, everyone should check out GaoGaiGar. It mightn't be to everyone's taste as it start off very monster-of-the-week, but it's gets more awesome towards the end. The 2 DVD boxsets that make up the whole series can be bought stupidly cheap.

I've just really started getting into Macross F now that it's finished (I like to marathon) and I have a couple of questions since I've never watched any series before (I will be watching plus... probably later today). I'm up to episode 12.

There are a bunch of things I'm wondering if they had any significance in earlier series...

Firstly, what's the story with the film that Ranka plays Mao in? is it some kind of post-modern reference to an earlier Macross series or film?

The song that ranka sings in the pageant... they announced it was an oldie... so, was it a song from a previous macross?

And was I supposed to recognise the red valkyrie that the cyborg guy uses?

Well, anyway, I'm really enjoying it and if Zappster still visits here, good job on QCing in the AonE-Gekkostate-Menclave releases.
