I gather most people know that Geneon (formally pioneer) shut their US office down, pretty much overnight a while ago. Well, Funimation have signed a licensing deal with the Japanese arm of Geneon.

FUNimation Entertainment and Geneon Entertainment Sign Exclusive Distribution Agreement for North America

First Titles Scheduled for Release in Late Summer

FLOWER MOUND, July 03, 2008 -- FUNimation Entertainment, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Navarre Corporation, and Geneon Entertainment (USA) Inc., a leading producer of Japanese animation, announced today their partnership to distribute select DVD titles in North America.

Under the terms of the agreement, FUNimation Entertainment obtains the exclusive rights to the manufacturing, marketing, sales and distribution of established Geneon titles, including international successes "Ergo Proxy", "Hellsing Ultimate" and "Black Lagoon".

Among the first titles to be released includes the special edition of "Hellsing Ultimate", directed by Tomokazu Tokoro and produced by Satelight (“Aquarion” and “Baldr Force EXE Resolution”).

Follow up releases include "Black Lagoon Second Barrage", “Karin”, "Kyo Kara Maoh Season 2", and "Lyrical Nanoha".

“Geneon is a strong producer, known for excellent production and quality of its anime series,“ said Gen Fukunaga, president and CEO of FUNimation Entertainment. “We are pleased to partner with them and we are committed to the successful release of these series.”

"FUNimation’s momentum as the leading anime distributor continues to build," said Yushin Soga, president and CEO of Geneon. "We are sure this partnership will only grow the prominence of our portfolio."

Additional titles include: “Black Lagoon”, “Elemental Gelade”, “Fate Stay Night”, “Kamichu”, “Ninja Vixens”, “Paradise Kiss”, “Rozen Maiden”, “Rozen Maiden Traumend”, “Shana”, “Shonen Onmyouji”, “The Familiar of Zero”, “The Story of Saiunkoku”, “When They Cry”, and “The Law of Ueki”.

Apparently someone in Funimation/its parent company suggested in febuary that the two were in talks over licensing shows that Geneon USA had handled. Given Funimation's prior dealings with the Lupin franchise, I'm hoping Funimation will knock out the rest of Shin Lupin III as oppossed to the 79eps Geneon released (of 155!)

Oh god. They're going to attempt Nanoha. That'll be amusing. At least Black Lagoon and Higurashi will have their series finished now.

No anime watched since Saturday from me except an episode of Golgo which is unusual after my marathon for the past 4 weeks. (168 episodes in a week ended up being my highest record.) I blame this entirely on Warcraft and Diablo 2.

Yeah, it does now.

I'm hereby predicting that ADV will shut its doors by Jan 1st 2009. Thats the second big list of titles they've lost in the last 9 months. They closed their Uk operation that was running for 12 years, they've got bugger all "big name" content, they've downsized their staff, and they were auctioning off some of their office furniture recently. Considering that a couple of years go ADV was one of the bigger licensors of anime in the US/Uk, they've now been overtaken by pretty much everyone. ADV seemed to go about licensing everything under then sun and never actually releasing anything (see: Gurren Lagann and Keroro Gunso, both of which they sat on for quite a while).

Latest updates:

New series of FMA has apparently been commisioned

ADV have a new licensing partner but aren't announcing anything till Otakon.

Evangelion live action movie is being considered by 3 western studios and one japanese studio. As if ADV still have the clout they had to get it made :(

I've not watched it yet, been busy all day, but I look forward to doing so tomorrow! Also, I think the first subs of Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora are out by Rumi, but they aren't a very good group, so I think I'll wait for the Ureshii version. (I think I read they're picking it up). It's the show that's taken over the noitanima slot, so it should be worth a look, and the art style looks quite charming in a Girl Who Leapt Through Time sort of way.

You realise there's a previous series right? No doubt it's perfectly watchable just thought you should know.

Read a few impressions that Birdy's looking quite awesome...

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that Antique Bakery was currently airing in the Noitamina slot. After which it'll be replaced by the Nodame Cantabile continuation :P

I've not seen it mentioned anywhere else that Mahou Tsukai is airing in that slot :)

Kaiba is the true Warp with the hole in his chest who we've been following about. Oddly enough Kaiba is also the name of this giant plant that's eating stuff.

Sorry I was confused - it's by the same director of Paradise Kiss, which was in the noitanima slot, so I just jumped to the wrong conclusion. You're right though, it is the bakery show that's actually in the slot. I noticed GG subbed the first episode of that... any good?

Thought so. Bloody confusing naming!

Not seen it yet (nor any other new show really...) but I've rarely been let down by a noitamina show so I'll be giving it a chance. I've heard it's BL-rich but that and one for the girls but that hasn't stopped me liking some other shows before. It could be the good kind like in Ouran or the inoffensive kind like in Nabari. We shall see

Yeah, I'll probably do likewise when I have the time, I've really enjoyed at least 3 Noitanima shows!

And I have to mention that Soul Eater 11 was AMAZING! Best episode so far.

How can you people keep watching Geass? It's like the faggiest mecha series since Seed Destiny.

Because it's meant to be awful wheras Destiny tried to take itself seriously and had Shinn fucking Asuka, one of the top 3 most annoying cunts in the world ever.

That said, I still haven't brought myself round to watching 12 or 13 yet.
