The japanese Blu-Ray for FMP:Second raid is up for pre order on cd-japan. A whopping $250 for four discs! No idea if it has english subs, but as it has enlish audio(!) I'm guessing it will. But seeing as you can buy the dvd box for £30 or so, I can't see many takers for the import blu-rays (which require a Region A player anyway)

Don't know why you would want the Blu-ray version when a DVD upscaler is perfectly fine for anime since you're upscaling large blocks of colours anyway. You can barely tell the difference between the Air Blu-ray and the normal DVDs. You only notice them when you squint at the video and make direct comparisons between them.

It's highly debatable that theres no point, and I can't speak for any specific anime titles having not seen any on Blu-Ray, but upscaling dvd is no match for a proper high def transfer. "large blocks of color" means nothing - theres so much more to it like that. Image sharpness, image quality and animation quality, all play a part. Dvd simply isn't as vivid or sharp as blu-ray, upscaling dvd isn't going to make the image quality better.

Saying that, if the source material isn't upto scratch or its a shoddy blu-ray transfer, it's not going to be noticable. The same goes in reverse - rubbish transfers are commonplace in anime dvds, and macroblocking due to compression can be extremely noticable on some transfers. Then you need to consider things like a screens native res, the quality of the scaler, the playback device, screen size, viewing distance and all that stuff.

As more and more anime is created in hd, upscaled dvd just isn't going to cut it.

Now that lovefilm have sent the last disc of fummofu I was missing, I'll be starting my rewatch of FMP (greatest ending theme of all time? I certainly think so) and Fumoffu, as well as actually watching TSR for the first time. Given the quality of the look of FMP, I'm going to take notice of just how good the transfer is. I'll be watching a upscaled 1080p image, so although I can't do a direct comparison, I should be able to see how well dvd copes.

For stuff like Tekkon Kinkreet though, Blu-ray is aces!

atm is it just this and the new Appleseed that are on blu-ray?

There's a lot that a DVD upscaler can do as long as it's a decent one. I personally couldn't tell the difference between the Air Blu-Ray and the upscaled version watching from a normal distance but I do notice artifacts and jaggy edges when I look from a few feet away.

5 centimeters per second is on blu-ray. It looks faaaantastic

Somewhat late to the party, I've finally started watching Gurren Lagaan. Up to episode 9 now and we've already had two episodes that were about 50% recap and episode 4 looked like it was drawn by a completely different team of animators. Except it's all brilliant.

Episode 8 though - :(

EDIT: Dammit. Episodes 15 onwards are in MKV format and my idiot Mac refuses to play them (well, all sound and no picture more like). Does anyone know where I can get AVI/MP4 versions of episodes 15 to 27?

FYI, Slayers revolution airs on wed (so far the only thing I've got to look forward too on my birthday  ). 2x13eps I think it is, although if that means there will be a gap or if it's just straddling seasons, I don't know. Theres a manga running now as well, but I don't know if the story is the same

Excellent.

Please Note: XBMC for OS X currently ONLY works on Leopard/Intel.

Well, if I needed another reason to upgrade my PowerBook then that would be a good one. In the meantime I still have to pay off my credit card bill for my new plasma TV, so that's going to have to wait for a while. Bugger.

Before you do that, try this custom build of Mplayer, compiled by two of the members of animesuki - it's compatible with PowerPC macs. http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=31445

It's a little fiddly (you have to press "j" to activate subtitles every time you use it), but it's very stable and handles the font rendering superbly.

Macross 12. WTF? EDIT:

guess I'm just a Macross n00b. So Pol Idols > Mechas in the Macroverse?

As I understand it

The Zentradi were originally a race with absolutely zero culture. So when they came across a race with culture it totally blew there minds and still does.

If you watched the TV version of 06, go and download the DVD uncut version. No long flashbacks in that, and the episode makes sense and is a lot funnier.

Also, download CCCP, you should be able to watch anything then.

No CCCP for Mac, Piro.

Watch it. NOW. It's technically a side-story, set a while after the original Macross. It helps a little if you're a fan, but was obviously made so that anyone at all could just dive right in. They all seem like that, tbh.

Plus, it's got one of the finest soundtracks of all time. Yoko Kanno at her damned best.

Watched the movie the other day it`s damn fine . There`s some classics out there. Watched oedo 808 too not long ago that was the first anime i was introduced to when i was 18 and was pretty blown away.

Tried watching Kaiba last night --couldnt get my heed around it and i loved kemonozume but could only get half way through before having to watch dr who ep12 again.

Have been watching the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya too . Some amazing guitar scenes and the story was brill but I can only seem to get up to ep 13 is there a new season to come soon I need more! Otherwise I`m watching it again.

Buy a PC :P

Talvalin, if you can't find them in .avi anywhere, then convert them yourself.

A quick Google turned up Visual Hub to do this. I've got this downloaded somewhere, so I'll give the trial version a go and see if that works (2 minute conversions only though).

Ahem. Give it a go, it's less fiddly than bloody converting files!

Do we know who's subbing Slayers? I might actually follow a show on a weekly basis again with this. The original was probably in the first 5 series I watched (something like Love Hina, Slayers, Evangelion, Kenshin and something else were the first batch)

So, did anyone else here watch Kurenai of this years spring season?

Also, watched Fate Stay Night the other day.

Ending left me kind of wanting more, and felt like the entire thing was kind of pointless, but still good.

Also, Archer lives up to his reputation as GARcher.
