ADV have done a Gonzo

HOUSTON, May 22, 2008— Today ADV Films, the number one producer-distributor of anime outside of Japan, announced a special promotion with Crunchyroll, the leading destination for Asian content on the Internet, that will bring the fan-favorite series Welcome to the N.H.K. to the web. In a progressive campaign to leverage digital promotion, ADV has made the first two installments of the 24 episode series available for at www.crunchyroll.com. Two additional episodes will be added each Thursday over the next five weeks.

Coming just in time for the long holiday weekend, Crunchyroll’s internet broadcast anchors a summer long campaign to bring this critically-acclaimed anime series to a mainstream audience. To help new viewers jump onboard, ADV has arranged for select national retailers to offer volumes 1-3 of Welcome to the N.H.K. DVDs at 50% off the regular suggested retail price. In addition, Crunchyroll is running a community contest to find the “Top Otaku,” where fans can win free Welcome to the N.H.K. DVDs.

Welcome to the N.H.K. is an unconventional anime from Studio GONZO (Afro Samurai, Chrono Crusade) and director Yusuke Yamamoto (Sgt. Frog). The series turns a humorous eye to the NEET generation (Not in Employment, Education, or Training). Throw agoraphobia into the mix and you have one of the strangest anime comedies in years. Originally a hit novel from critically-acclaimed author Tatsuhiko Takimoto, Welcome To The N.H.K. has also been adapted into a manga series of the same name (published in North America by TOKYOPOP).

Welcome to the N.H.K. is a dark comedy filled with social satire, interesting characters, and crazy conspiracy theories that is sure to appeal to anyone with a little nerd in them. “Whether you are a proud otaku, a fan that lives in constant fear of being perceived as a geek by your friends, or a borderline hikikomori, you will see a part of yourself in it, and have lots of fun in the meantime” (Protoculture Addicts).

Crunchyroll is airing English dubbed versions of Welcome to the N.H.K., which are accessible to Internet users across Canada and the USA.

The anime companies seem pretty split over internet showings. A couple of japanese studios have embraced the concept, and so have ADV. On the other hand Bandai USA and Funimation have both issued press releases over recent months condemming Crunchyroll and co and seemingly have no desire to do themselves a favor and work out a mutually beneficial arrangement (In crunchyroll's defense they have complied with all of Funimations requests to remove specific content).

So I decided to bump up Nijuu mensou no musume to the top of my to watch list, given the comments in here, and I'm glad I did. It's great. Only 2 more episodes left till I catch up to the most recent subbed one. Some great characters in there and surprisingly enough even the kids that are in there aren't annoying. I think I'd probably have been satisfied with just an entire series of episodic adventures with Chiko learning the ropes, but I like how they're building up the other story thread. Nabari no ou after I catch up on this

Toshokan Sensou ep 6 - great episode again. I particularly loved some of the self-referential stuff from Komaki during his monologue. And reading through some of the stuff in the animesuki thread regarding the show has just served to strengthen my love for it. :(

Glad you're enjoying Nijuu Mensou. It's a really cool show.

But you've seen Toshokan Sensou ep 6? Have I missed something or have you strayed from the path of FB-menclave? (wait... are you working on Sensou?)

Piro: A happy series is WAAAAAN PEEEEEESU! or, Keroro Gunsou. Or just watch the Girl Who Leapt Through time again.

I'm watching Keroro Gunsou now myself, and it's so very silly.

In other news Bandai Visual USA is closing it's doors. However unlike Geneon/Pioneer's closure it looks like it's being reabsorbed into Bandai as a whole. I wonder if this is due to Bandai's attempts at near silmutaneous releases across the globe (well, US/Japan at least :) )

I thought haruhi was out this month (monday coming), but play has it down for 6th june.

Surely this is the best package to hit the uk yet (assuming you want to pay £30 each for 4 special editions). Bonus discs have broadcast order, so I'm guessing the normal discs are the japanese dvd order?

Amazon also had it down for 26th May, but looking now it has also been put back to June. But my pre-order has not had its date changed. I assume that's just a mistake with the pre-order and I won't be getting it early.

Code Geass R2 08:

Someone on the writing team is a fan of Anonymous.

LOL, nice observation.

What's he doing though? Putting a million people on an iceburg doesn't seem like the best of plans to me..

I'd definitely sign up for a ride on an iceberg. No questions asked!

Golgo 13 is awesome.

And now it's time for Geass. Kaiba 5 subs out too.

Edit: Geass 8: Oh man. I laughed so hard at the reveal that I started to feel sick. Also,

they put a dog in a Zero mask in one of the larger shots.

No preview at the end of the eclipse version. How about the gg version? Does this mean the rumour of episode 9 being delayed a week I read was true?

After hitting the 26ep mark in both Keroro Gunsou and Galaxy Angel 3, I'm now starting to crack through some Shin Lupin III (Red Jacket series). It's good that the first episode is set 5 years after the original series (when it did actually have a 5year gap in reality) and is a sequal to the first episode of the original. Just a shame I'll run out of eps because Geneon were incompetant, and the group who released it online have no plans to finish the series until someone re-licenses it. Which strikes me as shit because the same group fansubbed the original unlicensed series themselves :) and bootlegs are cheap and easily found for the source material

Just finished watching Death Note.

Wow.

i'm up to ep 20 and really enjoying it. Its the first anime that my wife has wanted to sit down and watch too. I think the slow(ish) pace helps. I'm going to try and get her to watch Monster next but i'm not sure if the length of the show will start to wear her down.

You've got some amazing stuff yet to come.

Best thing I've watched in a very, very long time.

Plus, the music's fantastic. (Except for the first op and ed, which are ear-splitting shit)

Is it just me who

found that all rather deus ex machina... I mean, to organise over a million people to do anything is pretty hard in and of itself. Furthermore to actually get them each a costume and have them store it on their person beforehand... I was convinced it was an optical illusion at first, but it later seemed I was wrong on that count. Still, amusing way for him to do it... always the pedant and the trickster, Zero.

It wasn't really a deus ex machina, it was his plan!

Very impressive changing speed though! Those guys must have practiced hard!

Especially the dog.

It's not really that hard to just put a helmet on a dog, to be fair.

Unless they train dogs really well in the alternate history future, in which case I have a newfound respect for Zero.

The obvious answer here is clearly:

He geassed the dog to make it put on it's own helmet. Obviously.

While I'm waiting for more new subs to come out, I decided to finally do something about my ridiculous series backlog from the beginning aiming roughly to finish a series a day. So far so good but apparently I have enough to last me for 2 months at this rate. Ho hum.

That raises an interesting question. Does

geass work on animals?
