I want to watch an anime series. Things that would appeal to me include

-A good sci-fi

-A fun adventure

-Something intelligent

I'm looking for something a bit intelligent, and my problem is when I go to look for something to watch, there is so much that just looks incredibly juvenile and hyperactive, that I can't figure out what is actually good. I'm not really a fan of big robots either..

I don't mean it has to be incredibly intellectual or anything. I would consider something like "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" not to be juvenile, even though it was aimed at kids.

Suggestions?

Crest of the Stars and it's sequel Banner of the Stars. Looks a bit dated but I'm enjoying it a ridiculous ammount.

Edit - imp: yeah it's the one with 45 min eps. It's essentially some fairly bloody scenes with the occasional softcore yuri scene. It's like Gwyn says, keep your mind off the plot and it's quite entertaining.

Not the following:

Code Geass

I would recommend Voices of a Distant Star or The Place Promised in Our Early Days, maybe even The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. All of those are feature-length (well, the first is all contained in half an hour) but I think you would enjoy them.

Of course I would normally plump for Neon Genesis Evangelion, but it does have more than a smattering of big robots. Still, if you can get over that it fights your criteria very well.

Cowboy Bebop perhaps?

Edit: What was wrong with Code Geass? Did it not fit all his criteria?

He did say he wanted something that wasn't hyperactive and juvenile with no big robots. Besides, Geass is many things but I don't thing intelligent would be the first word I'd use to describe it.

It's funny, pretty much every anime(apart from Ghibli movies) that I've ever checked out has just been recommended to me, heh.

I really liked Planetes. Cowboy Bebop was enjoyable. I really love The Place Promised In Our Early Days, mostly because of the atmosphere and the music though, I think the characters tend to vocalise their feelings a bit too much a lot of the time, it seems unnatural. Voices of a Distant Star was decent. Apart from Ghibli movies, that is essentially every Anime I've ever seen.

I'm planning on watching Byousoku 5cm soon. Same for The Girl Who Jumped Through time. I was looking more for TV series recommendations, although recommendations of great movies are still welcome. I guess I'm looking for a series to get into, because a big part of my motivation for wanting to watch some anime is for Japanese listening practise. That said, the desire to watch something good is also a factor.

In that case I would recommend you try Neon Genesis Evangelion for sci-fi, action/adventure and some thought processes thrown in. There are gigantic robots, but they don't form the entirety of the series by any means, it's more about the characters themselves.

5cm A Second is definitely worth a viewing at some stage.

o/\o

Not so much the first 6-8 eps, but certainly the bulk of the show. That and don't judge the tv ending till you've seen End of Evangelion

Indeed. One of my friends stayed at university over the holiday, I leant him Nodame Cantabile and Neon Genesis Evangelion to keep him company. Talking about the characters and so forth of the latter with someone who'd just seen the series... good times.

I'll probably give it a re-watch in the endlessly long Summer holidays, although I've said that to myself about a number of series.

The mood stuck me to search for Haruhi on Play.com and it seems they're listing special versions of Volumes 1-4 to be released from the 26th of next month (and once a month thereafter) in PAL format. Hooray! Totally preordered and shit. Apparently it's been licensed by Beez, who did cowboy bebop pretty well. The special editions seem exactly the same as the R1 releases.

I don't normally buy volumes, just boxsets. But I think I'll make an exception.

You've got my kind of taste.

Check out Mushishi, it's no sci-fi but it just has this brilliant atmosphere. Last Exile might also be something you'd enjoy, it's very pretty and has a pretty decent plot. Well, until they loose it all at the end.

Fook, I just remembered the BEST one. MONSTER. This isn't sci-fi, but it's really excellent. One of my top 5 series.

If you haven't seen it either, then I suggest that you check out Full Metal Panic at some point.

For peeps after box sets, Amazon.co.uk have loads cheap. Ordered Azumanga Complete for £24, R2 :-)

Partious, you should check out The Melancholy of Harhuhi Suzumiya, it's definitely fun, has some minor sci-fi elements and is pretty intelligently written.

EDIT: It is hyperactive though... go with Mushishi, I hear nothing but good things about it.

I think I'll check out Mnemosyne when Ureshii sub the DVD rips; if I'm going to watch it for guns and tits, they may as well be uncensored guns and tits, right? (Impressions in about a year then, probably).

DOUBLEEDIT: o/\o to JohnC.

I don't think it's censored beyond some of the more....graphic scenes to be honest and even then I doubt you'd really want to see them. Think Higurashi's nail scene and you'd be close. Do it now ffs. Only 2 eps out anyway.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH. Censorship is good. Okay, I'll download them later today. I thought I'd finally get round to watching Clannad, too, so I'm downloading the widescreen eclipse subs. Although, first... I am watching Haruhi again, because it's utter genius. I'm pretty glad the director of Fumoffu! Is directing Haruhi S2.

Just watched episode 52 of Hayate. Maan, it's really weird to think that show's been on for a year now. I remember being so excited when it started too. It's not always been fantastic, but it's been pretty entertaining for the most part, so I look forward to seeing it back on whenever they want to bring it back.
