Random question but what was the series or movie that got everyone into anime? Bit interested to see what made everyone else start.

For myself, it was probably when Cartoon Network were still showing Tenchi and Gundam Wing. I seem to remember sticking with the former simply because I couldn't believe there was a cat/rabbit that was actually a spaceship.

Fist Of The North Star round a friend's house when we were 13. I think we watched from the bit where Ken gets fingers stuck into his stomach onwards. It was gloriously ultra-violent and one of the best things ever, though we were bemused by the nipple-less girlfriend when she strips off for no apparent reason.

Love Hina :)

I watched a ton of stuff on Sci-Fi a good 6 months before that but Macross Plus and Castle of Cagliostro aside it was all complete BOLLOCKS (GiTS and Akira included) and it did more to put me off then get me interested

For me it would probably be Getter Robo, but I can't remember which series. This was way back in the late 80s though, when I was a kid, and we had this VHS tape which had an episode of it on and I used to watch that religiously. Don't remember if it was subbed or dubbed though. I also remember some Ultraman back then too so I guess I'd add that. Oh and there was Mysterious Cities of Gold and some other stuff. Since then it's been on and off viewing for example:

I think the first anime show I ever saw was Teknoman on Fox Kids way back in the mid-Nineties, and it was fucking brilliant. "You'll never get this planet as long as I am here to defend it!" :)

this :P after which I didn't really watch more until relatively recently when there was this sort of hour long slot on saturdays (?) on the scifi channel called something like Saiko Exciting and they'd show dubbed episodes of Evnagelion and Nadesico (still a few years back though). Then a couple of years ago I decided to check up on Naruto which people seemed to be talking about and that got me into fansubbed anime, which I was completely oblivious to at that point, in a big way. This was probably the real turning point because I went on to watch loads of stuff after this and still do, but I still regard Getter Robo as the series that started it all off. Now though it's more about balancing it between other interests such as gaming and US tv shows etc...

Hmm, well, When I was growing up I spent my summers in Thailand, so I ended up watching a LOT of poorly dubbed anime like Doraemon and Ranma 1/2. I didn't really think much of it at the time but remembered watching some (poorly dubbed) One Piece and Rurouni Kenshin when I was 13 in the year 2000, (except I thought Sanji was cool). Growing up in my teens I dabbled with Anime, only the big name movies that you could get in HMV - Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Metropolis, Spirited Away, etc. When I was in Japan on my gap year, the hotel I was staying at in Tokyo was selling the viz translated paperbacks of One Piece and so I bought a couple for the journey to Mt. Fuji and thought they were genius. I bought the rest when I got back to england and downloaded the 150 odd episodes that had been subbed so far. Brilliant.

In my first year in uni I was eager to watch the rest after having read all the manga online, and once I didn't have masses of One Piece on tap I didn't really watch much. At least not until summer term, when I bought some Bleach and Naruto tankobons to procrastinate from revision, and ended up watching those shows as well, just for the sake of not working.

Basically I looked in this thread about half a year later and saw everyone talking about Haruhi Suzumiya and so I downloaded and watched that. Afterwards, you guys turned me into a massive geek with all your recommendations and whatnot. Bastards.

There. Much more detail than anyone cares to know!

It's kind of hard to remember that far back, but I seem to recall Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, and Dragonball Z were all mixed in there somewhere, not sure in what order, or how far apart they were, but they seem to strike me as distant bits of my past. Maybe not so much Tenchi Muyo actually, but almost certainly DBZ...

My interest in anime was first piqued by Super Play. I'd read that magazine from cover to cover, mainly for the SNES games of course, but I ended up reading all the anime stuff and was fascinated. I was pretty young though, so didn't have the wherewithal or money to buy all these weird videos from places that I didn't understand. So I never actually watched any of them. But, years later when I was in college they started showing anime on Cartoon Network at around 5pm. So I would watch that. I mainly just gawped at Dragonball Z as it was so bizarrely rubbish (I particularly enjoyed the way that they would say the planet was going to explode in five minutes, and then at the end of the twenty minute episode it was going to explode in four minutes), but I did really enjoy Gundam Wing and Tenchi Muyo, and I especially enjoyed the fact that they were so old that they were actually contemporary with my old issues of Super Play, so I could dig them out and finally understand what the fuck those articles were talking about.

When I got to university, I couldn't get the internet in my shitty halls, and broadband was pretty flash then anyway. So I ended up swapping CDs around with my friends there, and I ended up seeing Cowboy Bebop and Trigun (and then later on Love Hina) through the beauty of low quality DivX. Good times.

Got much further (or if like me you might have dedicated one entire evening to it) with Gankutsuou Lorfarius?

Yup only 5 more episodes to go.

Just seen Alberts chum get killed in the giant robot duel which was a bit odd. Everything seems to be falling apart for Albert and his chums, doesnt paint the count in a good light at all. I was half expecting Albert to be the counts son but the time difference when he was thrown in the Chateau is just too great. Shame as it would have made an awesome reveal.

Plus, Chun-li with her tits out, eh? EH?

Ah the shower scene

Yeah, I remember watching all that stuff on CNX/Toonami/Cartoon Network when I was really young. I thought Gundam Wing was fucking awesome. DBZ too. Saw the odd episode of Outlaw Star/Bebop and saw a few Tenchi episodes as well

First thing I remember watching was flicking on the TV to watch Gohan punching a rock in half when he was being trained by Piccolo.

:D I shouldn't be laughing at that but I just couldn't help myself.

Oh god. So wrong. there seems to be a whole spate of stuff like Tieria role switching. Seeing the entire cast of Haruhi being reveresed is...rather disturbing. And lets not even go near what they did to Sunohara...

Oh my... he looks rather cute... ;)
