I'm looking for something that's beautiful, dark and thought provoking.

Patlabor and then Patlabor 2! Both are excellent and have all three of those qualities mentioned (well, a little less dark and a little more thought provoking). They're political thrillers.

Maybe Jin-roh: The Wolf Brigade, you will want to read the summary before watching this. It's a love or hate thing.

All three of them are out on DVD although Jin-Roh might be a little hard to find.

Not posted in here before, but I'm after watching some good Anime. Other than Studio Ghibli stuff, Akira, Dominion Tank Police and few other of the more well known films/series I've never really watched much. So I'm looking to you guys for some recommendations of stuff I can download and try out.

I prefer the more cutesy Anime as opposed to mental robots and space fights (though I'm not vitoing those all together), but nothing so crap that it looks like it's geared towards 3 year olds.

This is probably a long shot but I did watch a film (could have been part of a series), back in the early 90s, which involved some school girls which I think had some weird powers. If I saw the box cover or maybe a name then I'd probably remember it, but I remember quite enjoying it and would like to see if it's still as good as I thought. I realise my description is a bit vague but that's as much as I can give.

If you can't figure out what I'm on about then give me some suggestions of what I should be watching anyway.

Cheers. :)

I don't know what series you're describing there, JFK, but you should grab some Azumanga Daioh. It's very funny. Few clips here:

Yeh it was a bit of a long shot really, a friend at school had it but that was about 15 years ago and I can only remember a few screenshots.

But Azumanga Daioh, the artwork is :).

Whats the general plot with this then? Is it worth trying to 'find' some?

//edit

Don't worry, watching the first episode now. :)

You are me, and so I'm sure you're aware of the common bond these films share. Anyway, I'd add to those with one more reccomendation: Royal Space Force (aka the wings of Honneamise) is a fantastic film. Its not overtly dark, but it is thought-provoking and brilliantly done. The english dub is also exceptional.

There is no general plot. It's basically insanity with a fuck off huge floating cat thing and a paedophile teacher.

Sounds like Project A-ko to me.

JFK, give Azumanga Daioh a few episodes if it doesn't immediately click, it took me a few to get into it and now I love it dearly.

As for other recommendations, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a wonderful film and really should be watched. School Rumble is a very funny high school comedy, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a bizarre (and utterly brilliant) tale of an endearingly bossy schoolgirl who's obsessed with the paranormal and Nodame Cantabile and Honey and Clover are emotionally involving (and funny) tales of fine music and art students respectively.

Awesome choice, loving it.

For a minute I thought you were right, but then checked some clips and it seems not. Very similar in style and colours though. It's almost a cross between this and Azumanga Daioh, and it was definitely dubbed in English on video around the early 90s.

Close, but not the one.

I'm on the third episode and love it, not sure why but I just do.

I'll definitely give the others a look once I've ploughed through Azumanga Daioh. :D

Cheers guys.

Gundam 00 20:

They really keep shitting all over Saji, don't they? First his girlfriend, then his sister. Poor bastard's going to go insane. The GN-X suits are awesome though, looks like Patrick might actually get one over the Gundams next week.

How many episodes is it? I've also heard comparisons with Ghibli, is that fair?

It's 26 iirc, and yes, I think it's a fairly good comparison in that it has a family friendly aesthetic, great animation and some adorably bizarre creatures in it. It's a very good show, hope you enjoy it.

Opinions on True Tears, please?

Pretty good for the genre. I'm not watching Clannad until it's finished, but I like it more than Sola and Air, but not as much as Kanon (2006). It's better than School Days though. I've watched five episodes of that and I just want it to die. I may be drunk right now but the animation sucks, the characters are all irritating and the VA playing the girl who "doesn't" fancy Makoto sounds like she's 40. And Makoto is a prick with an ill-fitting uniform.

so is Death note any good then? i'm in the mood for some anime and it sounds interesting.

Death Note is better in manga form, but the adaption is pretty decent. In either form the story loses its way about a third of the way in and then is irreparably poor after two thirds have elapsed. The initial third is superb though.

It has some ghibli staff involved, and some of the characterisations are rather ghibli-esque - if renderered differently than what you'd expect.

I'm finding it wildly imaginative and some of the keyframe expressions are extremely funny.
