Finished watching Last Exile last night. After several good reviews on the web and a few recommendations from here I thought I was onto a sure thing. But afraid to say I thought it was all pretty mundane and boring. They tried to shoehorn some mystery into the whole tale around three quarters of the way through with the Exile bit but it all fell apart in my eyes. Shame as it was really well done with some great animation.

That's the thing with Gonzo productions; they never seem to know where the fuck they're going with the plot. I thought Last Exile was pretty good, though.

Just watched Macross Frontier. Oh my. Utter class.

I though only the first episode was out?

Am I right? I watched the first episode and it was pretty good.

My only complaint with Last Exile was with all the female characters wanting to jump Claus' bones. That aside it's one of the better action/adventure anime series that I've seen.

Yup the action stuff was great but as Meh pointed out the plotline was all over the place. It practically changed gear 3 times throughout with no overall sense of where the series was going.

Even Klaus's sister wanted to jump his bones. Disturbing :P

I'd agree the plot structure is the weak point of the programme. But still, chocobo racing, Skies of Arcadia style battles and Lord Dio make it worth watching.

I'm looking for some more good anime films to see, I would ask for series as well but there are simply too many of them, I am not a pirate (my home net connection simply couldn't handle all those torrents) and they tend to be ridiculously overpriced in the shops so I tend not to bother with those. My experience in the medium never really went much further than studio Ghibli and Ghost in the Shell (I loved them all) and I feel like looking a little beyond that. I'm looking for something that's beautiful, dark and thought provoking. I'm not really one for the more depraved elements of Japanese culture (I'm all for violence provided it serves an artistic purpose, but keep the tentacles to a necessary minimum and no rape please) Also, try and make things as stand alone as possible as I don't want to have to go chasing down entire series of films with reams of tie ins, beyond that, it's all go.

Cheers,

Rory

Jeez. I wonder if Anime really deserves this reputation in the west.

Rent them online. Yes the selection is limited compared to what is in the US or fansubbed, but the stuff you can rent in the uk will keep you going for months

I'm still waiting on 19 to download, but I'd be more than happy with a solid Saji/Louise episode at this point - how could you not want that after the way 18 ended!?

I haven't watched any anime for a while, so I took a chance with Gundam 00 and Persona: Trinity Soul. The latter's ok for an emo show and ought to serve as a backwards-primer for PAL Persona 3, but Gundam's been the shit so far: I've spent the past two days catching up and air-punching whenever they do some sort of significant reveal.

Not as good as Wing, though. There's waaaaay too many characters and factions, and through no fault of their own, it's thick with metaphors that anyone outside their intended audience would quite rightly think laughable.

EDIT: Well the part I fully expected to be decent turned out to be thoroughly shit. The rest, however, rocked. Also,

where the fuck did those GN drives come from? Who do they belong to and who brought representatives of all three continents to Antarctica?
