And then you pay out all that money for a series too find the subtitles are gash either due to poor english or because they use a stupid font that is too small or illegible.

I wouldn't mind paying out for reasonabley priced box sets but they insist on wasting years by putting them out on individual discs. Look at Azumanga Daioh; only now has it gotten a boxset release :(

30 - 40 bucks in the USA for the same amount of episodes.

Several months/years after the individual releases yes. The only time complete or partial boxsets for larger series have been that price on their debut is when they've been done on the cheap and/or have been available for years on vhs (City Hunter being an example that fits both as it was hardsubbed from vhs and had no bonus features or dub)

to be honest, as far as fansubbing of TV shows is concerned, i'm a tad sceptical about all this, as they must make a profit of the airing of the show with TV commercials (fuck, lagann had mcdonalds as a sponsor!) , otherwise they wouldn't be airing on TV in japan at all!.. TV stations aren't charities, and anime as a whole can be troublesome for them because of the content.

They get shitloads from merchandising too. I suspect rising costs are to blame. Certainly a lot of Anime a few years ago (think 3-6yrs) used to be funded by western companies (Pioneer/Geneon for example). I suspect a lot of that has stopped - especially given Geneon's withdrawal from the market

about £20 for 3-4 episodes on the high street. :)

It's shit, but to be fair, the standard rrp of dvds that sell far far more, isn't always much cheaper. Solution is, don't buy from the high street. They won't drop the prices while it's considered a niche market, and it will never be mainstream enough in dvd's lifetime.

Its meant to be well expensive in Japan isnt it? Like £40 for 2 episodes (once you work it out) ? They probably think we're getting a bargain.

Last I looked japanese dvd's tended to be £25-35, so I don't think you are far off. We are getting a bargain compared to the japanese, but obviously not compared to the yanks ;)

When compared to Western TV - 24, Simpsons, Red Dwarf - they're nailing you for Anime. Heck, you can buy all 10 series of Friends or X-Files for £100, then you should be able to buy complete sets of the big series for a similar amount.

See that this is "International" person from Gonzo talking. Then he should realize that people want to see the series FAST and they want GOOD QUALITY SUBS. Both of which the fansub scene provide, and he doesn't.

..and I'm a little skeptical of this whole 'loosing lots of money' thing. Are they REALLY loosing money, or is this a case of them not making quite as much money as they did before?

Coz if they were loosing out, then we'd have seen them embrace the community by now. Or at the very least try a subscription streaming service.

Basically, I don't buy anime on DVD because it's 1) wildly expensive. I've seen like £30 for 2 episodes a few times. 2) The subtitles are frequently atrocious, especially compared to the quality of some of the really best fansubbers. The quality of them now is insane, it's frequently easy not to even notice translations for writing now they are so well synced. Whereas on a DVD you'll be lucky if they bother to translate writing at all. 3) You obviously have to wait an age for DVDs to come out, especially in the UK.

But the answer is simple - hire the best fansubbers to work on shows preferably while they are still in production. Then set up a stage6-style website (at least of the same visual quality) and either put up episodes for free with advertising (which could be targeted and everything of course) or for a small fee (in the range of £1 an episode). They'd probably end up with money coming out of their noses.

Anyone seen Ghost Hound? It's a bit of a spiritual anime with outer body experiences and all but I really like the way it focuses on how people are coping after horrendous events that have happened to them. It starts to get a tiny bit silly in episode 4 and falls into the team of 3 adventuring cliché but I reckon the psychiatrist's involvement in the story gives it a bit more reality.

Missed this. I've been watching it. It really is quite wierd. It's a bit hard to know where the boundary between Kotaro(?)'s traumatic delusions and reality is. Not too keen on the out of body stuff though. Very interesing mind. That and it looks absolutely fucking stunning in hd. Nicest looking series of the season.

Im lazy

I'm still only a few episodes in really.

Having some problems with nyoro~n subs I downloaded for episodes 5+7... subtitles just don't appear :(

How do I enable them? (filetype: Matroska File)

Honestly, I'd avoid the nyoro~n subs. Personally I'd get the black-order episodes up to episode 18 (what they've released) and then get the anon subs for the remainder of the series. Having said that the AiA-IZ subs are good too but they only have about up to ep 12 available publically.

As to showing the subtitles it depends what player you use. I normally use media player classic for my anime viewing and they usually have shortcut keys for enabling subtitles etc... IIRC for mpc you use the "S" key on the keyboard to toggle between the subtitles. You should be able to turn them on from the menu at the top though or by right clicking anywhere on the video and going to Navigate --> Subtitle Language --> and then picking one of the options here. If this doesn't work e.g. I knew someone who couldn't turn on the subtitles for ep 7 of nyoro~n's release in the menus because the option was greyed out, then revert to using the shortcut keys.

The other players should be similar I imagine, though again I'd recommend sticking with MPC or Zoom player, whichever one tickles your fancy.

As I said before, these will sell shitloads and cost minimal amounts to release in comparison to anime (although I was thinking movie releases not tv releases :P). Simply put, ADV Uk, Manga and MVM are all relatively small companies selling a few thousand dvds per release. After licensing costs and BBFC costs, the profit is going to be a lot smaller then Fox etc selling a couple of hundred thousand + of each release.

Why am I defending them? Don't get me wrong, I think the prices should be lower and there needs to be better offers. But when I was still an active participant in the Anime communit,y I had some chats with the guy who runs (ran?) ADV uk, so I got to know the ins and outs to an extent (as much as he could share without risking his job anyway - for example he couldn't give any clues as to their average print run).

At the end of the day the price for each volume is determined by market conditions more then them being greedy bastards

Thing is, the costs don't need to be high. I'm pretty sure they could get the fan subbing community to do it for almost free.

There is absolutely no need for any anime to be dubbed, unless for TV.

Fiver says dub is the majority choice of anime dvd buyers in the uk. Also theres no way in hell most fansubbers would do the subbing work if offered.

I'm really enjoying Ghost Hound so far. The soundtrack's great and it looks wonderful too so I'm sticking with it for the moment. The fact that Shirow Masamune was involved in the production is also another good reason to stick with it if you ask me.

And, as silly as it is, I'm absolutely loving Moyashimon at the moment. Any show about the adventures of bacteria is worth a watch in my opinion.

No one would buy the individual discs if the wait for a cheaper and shelf space saving box set was only a few extra months. I say this from experience as one of those suckers that bought the individual volumes of GITS:SAC 1stgig. :(

Still, can't complain too much as I've just bought the entirety of Twelve Kingdoms for £40. :D

If they let them continue subbing in exchange for being able to use their subs for the DVD release and/or giving them really unique freebies, then there'd be fansub groups lining up to do it.

They can happily put their own ads in it too, for the downloads I mean.

Why on earth would they do that? Who would buy the dvds if the companys supported fansubs? The industry isn't going to start asking fansubbers if they want a job unless they can end fansubbing at the same time. Supporting the fansubs is hardly going to create booming business for the people releasing at retail

Sorry, but you're not going to convince me with that sort of idea.
