I've read all but the last 4-5 chapters of Gantz, and in all that time they've not explained anything about what it's all about. Instead of that they show people raping dead aliens. That's my problem with it - there are some interesting fights, but the actual story doesn't progress.

Berserk, I've read the first volume of and it felt very much link Gantz (i.e. no substance). Seen the anime, of course.

The story is progressing, but at a ridiculously slow pace. We got some snippets of info when that detective bloke started asking Kei about stuff.

But, of course, Kei

got 100 points and decided to get the fuck out of there, which means his memory was gone.

The last 4-5 chapters are pretty cool. You can tell this'll be one of the last fights for a while, that's for sure.

Which is kinda good, as I always enjoy the inbetween bits.

Episode eight of Myself; Yourself

Things are really getting traumatic/weird. The shots of the watch are really quite blatant now, we have the creepy old lady and the weird box, did she kill the cat? Nanaka is what we always suspected, screwed up, and the twins hate their father and their step-mother...

.

Now for some nice, well-adjusted Clannad, if anything strikes me I'll probably edit it here.

EDIT:

Clannad 7...

The similarities with other Key productions is really quite apparent, the girl being forgotten etc... still there's hope for some of the other 'paths' concerning the other girls. The violent one applying for student president should provide for some entertainment.

Seems that Naruto is turning itself around from a fairly average last arc, I'm looking forward to the next episode, the first time I've felt that in quite a while now, it's just a shame it's taken two episodes for them to sort themselves out and get out of the village when it could so easy have been one.

Compared with the other 2 series though I'd say it's a step above them. Although there's a similarity between the forgotten girl and probably Ayu from Kanon, I think the overall interaction is better as all the characters meet and talk to each other and not just Okazaki plus the humour element has been ramped up too. I miss Nayuki though. :D Next episode is out already! Go fetch!

The Seed movie will be a massive relief when it arrives

Yeah, I can't wait for half of the film to be filled with flashbacks to shit that happened ten minutes before. I have a real love-hate relationship with the SEED shows - when they're good, they're good, but when they're shit, they're like being anally raped with a beam saber.

Gundam 00 is a bit too "talky" and preachy to be honest...

The Seed movie will be a massive relief when it arrives

as for macross, anyone hear anything good about macross zero?

Watched a few eps of Zero, and it's totally ace, though rather different from stuff like Plus. And not as good.

But nothing beats Macross Plus in my eyes.

The pace was been very fast last episode - It covered about 2 chapters , whereas the rescue gaara arc covered about 1.2 chap per ep

If anyone feels like being helpful, where can I download The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (is there a widely used abbreviation for that?), Gurren Lagann, Claymore, and Clannad from?

Anyone seen Ghost Hound? It's a bit of a spiritual anime with outer body experiences and all but I really like the way it focuses on how people are coping after horrendous events that have happened to them. It starts to get a tiny bit silly in episode 4 and falls into the team of 3 adventuring cliché but I reckon the psychiatrist's involvement in the story gives it a bit more reality.

Time for another fansub vs anime industry debate.

The President of GDH International (Gonzo) kicked the current discussion off with this:

Internet piracy is the single biggest global threat to the anime industry and fansubbing is at the heart of the piracy problem. Fansubbed versions of programs recorded in Japan make their way to every illegal outlet for video content, these illegal outlets damage the ability of Japanese producers to sell DVDs and sell into Television in local markets and make it increasingly difficult for the studios to pay the animators, voice actors and actresses, writers, original creators, and everyone else who makes the anime that some fans enjoy responsibly and legally and that some fans pirate illegally...

...We understand that fans are really keen to see our shows as soon as possible (and that is really appreciated!!) but illegal file sharing and postings on streaming sites like YouTube are destroying our industry – and the starting point of file sharing is fan subbing. In order to try to protect our livelihood, we must do something and the whole industry in Japan is beginning to realise that we can’t stand by…otherwise the entire industry will disappear….that’s how bad things are!!

Read the whole Q&A here:

http://www.activeanime.com/html/content/view/2171/36/

A well-written counter argument in the form of an open letter to the anime industry can be found here:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/editorial/2007-11-25

Excerpt:

I do not blame the fans who download with impunity and don't buy a thing. Their attitudes, while damaging, are simply a reflection of the value of anime, which these days, is about $0.00.

That's right. Anime that has been fansubbed is effectively worthless. It's being given away for free. In terms of supply and demand, there is an infinite supply, and therefore the product is worthless regardless of how many people want it – it's like trying to sell buckets of sea water to people on a beach. The only people who would pay for it are either older fans who are attached to the old ways of consuming media, or worse, are doing so out of charity.

That is the state of this industry. And the companies who depend on anime for their livelihood let this happen.

Even Shinichi Watanabe made some time to voice his opinion on the matter:

intriguing.. in the eighties and early nineties most anime production houses didn't give a shit about the west, but now they can't survive without us...

to be honest, as far as fansubbing of TV shows is concerned, i'm a tad sceptical about all this, as they must make a profit of the airing of the show with TV commercials (fuck, lagann had mcdonalds as a sponsor!) , otherwise they wouldn't be airing on TV in japan at all!.. TV stations aren't charities, and anime as a whole can be troublesome for them because of the content.

I would pay £20 for an entire 26ep fucking series :D

Any particular reason why they don't lower prices?

re-dubbing, soundtrack licensing, or re-soundtracking depending how much of a licensing minefield is involved, apparently.

it's still ridiculous - if I wanted to buy say MONSTER, when it comes out on DVD (eventually) it'd cost me 360 bucks for the full series, but then again it aired in japan a number of years ago, VIZ has sat on it for ages, and if the translation of the manga is anything to go by, I'll stick with my free fansub. :(
