Gundam 00 is actually interesting, it's approach Legend of Galactic Heroes in places in terms of the quality in regards to real world politics. Curious to see how it pans out.

I was disappointed to see they'd resisted the temptation to have Graham's custom Flag painted red.

Two episodes into Clannad and I'm definitely enjoying it:

I like the way the main character's relationship with his father, and his own seeming weakness seems to give him more depth. The dango-making is really the work of someone who cares/wants to help. However it does seem like the interactions with the various girls take place in a very sequential visual-novel type way, one after another randomly.

1.

Cowboy Bebop

get the fuck out

Why on earth do people enjoy this show? I've tried watching it twice and all I think is " why am I even watching this"

I must say, I'm very surprised galaxy Express 999 is so high for a 50% western panel. As far as I know it's never had a western release (apart from maybe the film), and even the fansubs got no further then a couple of episodes

It's fun. That's why.

Also, the music's fucking awesome.

Like in anything Yoko Kanno does the music for.

Except GitS:SAC 2nd GIG. Her music sounded as bored as I was.

That list is clearly fucked, Patlabor 2 should be number one.

It's not as good as Bebop. Completely different, really, but still not as good.

:)

If this was a list of the most enjoyable animes, i wouldn't be too pleased with quite a lot of some of the top 20 got ranked if this was a popularity ranking. I agree with you, if this was a "enjoyability" anime list, then number 1 shouldnt be number 1, however, i do agree with the number 1 on that list being at the very least very impacting on the anime industry and community.

Hell, number 1 even has it's own meme.

One day I'm going to have to make a concerted effort to watch series #1 and also series #17. Most of that list I've not touched really and a couple I've never even heard of.

i'm pretty bold to say this but i do think that number 1 has the best soundtrack to any anime, ever. And i do think that opinion is universal to all who have watched it :)

I preferred the soundtrack to 27 myself! Still, it is a pretty great show.

It's a pretty dodgy list though, mainly for pitting TV shows against movies, but I'm partially just bitter most of my favourites didn't show up. I take it these were all titles released in the US?

19 episodes looking at my files on my HDD. Not a bad count when it's a 100+ episode series. I am stupidly waiting for a day when all the episodes are subbed so I can marathon the show (yeah, yeah, not likely at the current rate, but one can always hope).

It was 11 tops when I tried last and that was about 3 years ago. It's a shame that all the 70's-80's shows that people try and start end up silently dieing. Lupin, GE999, some other Matsumoto stuff, Cat's eye, etc. And we know that no American company is going to license these shows. Well, Pioneer/geneon did with lupin, but they missed they skipped the first season and would never say how much they were planning on doing (it was licensed chunk by chunk iirc). Actually I just looked on dvdpacific for Lupin and it seemed they got to vol16 and haven't released anything in 18months (and now they've folded the division iirc).

I couldn't care about most newer shows, I want some damm classics that actually last more then a few eps. There are a few like City Hunter (which I owned due to it's crazily low price per episode*), Maison Ikkoku (which I forget where I got to, making it unlikely I'll carry on with it) and urusei yatsura (50volumes :)) but those are conversions of old licenses (Maison from vhs and UY from vhs/ld). City hunter only got its dvd release because the license was running out and ADV could make a relatively quick and easy buck on it

*Each boxset was about £16 for 26eps. That was ridiculous at the time because they had never had a dvd pressing before, and were 5-6 dvds a boxset. The entire 4 seasons in 6 boxsets (140eps) cost about £110 including shipping from the states.

I'm so out of touch with current anime it's quite ridiculous. It's at the point where I've not heard of some of the stuff coming out on dvd recently - not even in this thread

After learning some Love Hina tracks on guitar today, I've added Love Hina to my rental list. It's been something like 6 1/2 years since I first watched it (twice in the same week!) and it was what got me into anime properly. Given my previous exposure was badly dubbed manga bollocks on sci-fi, it was a revelation (Slapstick anime ftw). Quite amazing really since I just picked a random title that was on someones trade list when i used to trade cds and dvds through the post via forums and I knew nothing about it whatsoever. Those were the days.

I've not seen it for 4 or 5 years now, although I watched it a bunch at the start, and I didn't even watch it when I bought the dvds  (long since sold). looking forward to seeing it again, so hopefully it doesn't take long to be sent out. Now to track dsown the Vocal albums I managed to delete a few days ago :(

I gave up some months ago on legitimate releases. These days I buy all my anime on DVD boxsets from Singapore via Ebay. They always come with great subtitles, in a proper box are excellent quality and have full english voice casting. Even better is that a standard show of 26 episodes is always split over 3 dvd's. No need to buy 7 or 8 volumes anymore. Whats even better is that the standard price is around £16, compare that to the £10 or so that you pay for each official volume and your laughing.

It also allows me to see some shows that I wouldnt bother with if I had to buy from the shops. Full Metal Alchemist is a good example as the entire series plus movie cost me less than £40 from Singapore. It's one of my favourite series now and was discovered after taking a risk.

What is Samurai X? What's it's relationship with Rurouni Kenshin? (I'm up to volume 9 of the manga)

Samurai X is the American title for Rurouni Kenshin.

Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (or Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen) is the prequel to the Rurouni Kenshin series and generally accepted to be better than the 94 episode anime series.

The manga of the actual rurouni kenshin series is better than the anime adaptation, with the second half of the manga steering towards a more "favourable" ending.

Good luck with the manga, only another 19 tankubon left to go :)

Thanks! Why didn't they just call it Rurouni Kenshin?

Not true at all. This is jut the branding given to the non Tv stuff due to different licensors. The tv series was released in the states as Rurouni kenshin by AnimeWorks, but the OVA's and the movie were released as Samurai X by ADV.
