I hope this doesn't take the thread wildly off course but I started collecting the Manga Force magasine. It's a shameless marketing ploy by the infamous Manga company but it seemed a good way for me to expose myself to a bit more of what I like... in the purely cultural sense of the word... :D

So far I've caught up with Ninja Scroll (seven years after I was told I really should watch it), Heat Guy, Makross Plus, Evangelion (I enjoyed this more than I predicted) and finally have Akira and Ghost in the Shell on my shelf, both of which I've seen before but never bought. The accompanying brochure thing with each release isn't a complete waste of time; very handy for background references made in Ninja Scroll regarding the Shogun conflicts of Japan.

The great thing about a decent DVD anime release is the subtitle/dubbing options. I prefer english subtitles with original soundtrack. I also get curious enough to try that damn awful American dubbing with english subtitles just to see if the translations are distinct. An example is the first Ghost In The Shell movie. The first scene with the major, after Batô states the major's mind is full of interference, the major's dubbing says "Must be a loose wire" and the subtitles say "Must be my time of the month". I suspect the subtitles are more accurate, maybe the USA wasn't ready for such honesty. :(

Or, 'must be a loose wire' contains five syllables, while 'must be my time of the month' has seven - dubs are constrained by the lip movements of the characters from the original japanese dialogue. Which is part of the reason why some lines are said really fast/strangely/completely different/crap/whatever. :D

Anybody watched the speed subs for Zombie Loan or Higurashi season 2?

EDIT: Zombie loan is pretty bad.

One thing Ive been doing is purchasing complete Singapore import series sets from Ebay. Granted they are copies but I havent come across a single set that has been anything less than excellent quality. The dubbing and subtitles are always selectable and of good quality. Has meant that Ive been able to watch some great series I would never have considered forking out £100 for over here to collect.

I've been loving Stage 6 for anime. Loads of stuff, it seems, and all of it's identical to whatever you'd download. Hell, it even has HD Lucky Star for you FREAKS that love it so much :)

Oh, and has anyone ever watched Green Green? Watched it about... four years ago, and I genuinely lolled in massive amounts.

I hear the sequel OVA is pretty much hentai, though >_>

Don't tell me they gave away the Death and Rebirth/End of Eva film with the magazine. They can't have released any of the series as ADV has those.

Yes, Death and Rebirth, and End of Evangelion have been sold in the Manga Force series... though there's no point watching 'Death' cos it makes no sense whatsoever.

Wait... you mean you've not actually seen the series? And dived straight into End of?

OH MY LOLLING CHRIST.

For some weird reason Manga released those 2 before the actual series. Im sorry to say I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I watched them both. Absolute mind fuck that made no sense whatsoever until I saw the series.

I watched that a few years back. It was basically a rubbish plotline filled with some creepy teenage kids as I remember. One with a rice fetish and the other with a wanking habit I think. Bits were funny though.

Still, it was adapted from a hentai series so it's to be expected. It was alright though, nothing amazing.

 Oh god, I'd forgotten that. It's been so long since I last saw it and I've seen so much since. All I could remember from it was that one of the guys kept trying to chat up one of the female students using various forms of rice or something. Or when he got turned on he had to eat rice or something. Argh! It's been ages.

Currently ploughing through Simoun. It's a lot less yuri filled than it was made out to be. I still have no idea what the hell's going on with the plot though. 9 more episodes for it to make sense.

Jesusss. "Death" is a bunch of clips from the series mashed together with something like 10 seconds of new footage. "Rebirth" is just the first bit of The End of Evangelion. The End of Evangelion is a remake of the last two episodes of the series in the form of a film.

So basically you've just watched the final episodes of an excellent series without having any back story, knowledge of who the characters are and what on Earth's going on.

THANKYOU MANGA FORCE

THANKYOU FOR RUINING EVERYTHING

I was about to watch Death Note, but I hear the story changes from the manga at some point? If so, don't think I'll bother.

I heard they skip some very minor stuff in the final chapters and the ending is changed ever so slightly but not enough to make any difference.

I think I read there's a Death Note special going to happen at some point, I hope that's good. They should animate some alternate endings.

In other news, I like Keroro Gunso. It's pretty cute.

all they do is move some elements of the plot around. All the content of the manga and the anime is the same. Actually the live action movies are the same as well.

My ex used to read Keroro Gunso, it is quite funny in places.

As for the Death Note anime: I have a question. I started watching it, and the first few episodes seemed great, apart from the weird set up of the hero being a completely twisted killer, the whole face off with L seemed pretty good. But just as it seemed to be heading to a tightly scripted and interesting conclusion (I forget when, maybe around episode 20?) it suffered from what every single series I've ever watched (admittedly not many) suffers from. This is when the creators decide, instead of finishing the story in a natural way and leaving a tightly written and exected series, they'd rather milk it for as much money as they can and to hell with the quality. When the thing started with that weird coroporation, it went horribly, horribly wrong. The first episode of that saga was so poor, crappy jokes like it had just become a comedy, cliched evil laughter from the bad guys - what? So my question is does it get better again? I've watched up until Light gets the book back again in the helicopter (I think that's obscure enough not to be a spoiler.) Does it ever get back to how it was at the beginning?

Except the live action movies add characters, change scenarios and alter the ending by finishing the story half way through the manga.

L wins!

Other than that, yeah, it's the same.

[/sarcasm] sorry, couldn't resist.

umm... so, anybody like the films?

EDIT for lau: Sort of. It returns to the original dynamic, but it never really feels as meticulously planned or as tense. Actually, all the back and forth planning and counter planning is probably just as good, it just loses impact as you're probably expecting it. The set of charcaters in the latter stages aren't really as strong either. I dunno about the plot being spun out or not, I thought it was a bit spun out too, but the author claims that he planned the whole thing from the start.

What??

They still have that corporation in the anime?? That was the worst part of the manga....it does pick up for the ending though....

As for the film, I really liked it, it was a good conversion

still wished Light won though ;_;
