I thought it might have been, but the setup is fine for everything else I watch softsubbed. Although the subs were ass rather than the other, generally higher quality format (the extension escapes me). It didn't help that the translator thought it fit to leave some lines untranslated as {*} or give alternate translations as {/lit: "whatever"}. Even the timing sucked so loads of lines overlapped, although that's probably a problem with VLC player. Maybe I got a misnamed file if no-one else had a problem with the subs?

How is Death Note still amazing? By the laws of Anime physics it should either have ridiculously bad filler or be spent out already. Every week it manages to make me manically excited about the twists and turns each new episode brings.

I've been disappointed with some of the death note episodes

mostly the section with the uber gay good Light and recently the Mello stuff

but the last couple of episodes were amazing stuff. 32 definitely redeemed itself for me. Only 5 more episodes to go and I still have no idea how they'll wrap it all up. :)

I do, because I've read it, but yeah... there's no filler, it's all straight from the manga. The recent episodes have been so good as they cut out all the boring exposition that bogged down the pacing of the manga in the later chapters. To be fair, the show/manga is just exposition after exposition, but for some reason near the end it seemed a bit dull as the central premise wasn't as tasty or fresh as the original scenario.

I reckon Death Not picked up recently as the last one I watched, episode 31, managed to get through about 7 chapters of the manga whereas shows like one piece and naruto get through about 2 chapters per episode (sometimes only one if they fancy stretching it out - one piece 310...)

I just hope they don't decide on making a second series.

p.s. did anyone notice

Kira

Mello

Near

Hooray for the alphabet!

That nowhere near as bad as some one pointing out that Light's second name spelt in reverese produces "Im a gay Light". (Yagami Light)

Also, fans of ouran may notice that Tamaki(Light) as well as Haruhi and Kyouya and Haruhi

Mikami and Kiyomi respectively

are in the series.

I think it's just the VLC player. It's known to have issues with softsub playback and wherever I've been it's not usually the most highly recommended choice for playing softsubbed files, especially among anime circles. Some of that stuff you're describing seems like VLC is just displaying comments from the subs which aren't supposed to be shown (they're not part of the dialogue) i.e. like little comments in program code which don't do anything, they're just there for reference/pointing something out/etc... and you use the {} brackets to mark those comments in ass files at least. One recent example was gg releasing a sub of a Code Geass episode which purposefully had some stuff in the comments or something that stopped it from playing properly (if at all) on VLC.

Also .ass is genereally regarded as the higher quality forma, unless there's another one I'm unaware of(highly likely as I'm not that much in the know about this kind of stuff). I think it goes .ass > .ssa > .srt

I'd recommend trying out some other solutions because these sorts of problems might pop up again with other files. I personally use CCCP (a codec pack) + media player classic for all my anime watching and I've encountered few problems. Those that I have encountered have been solved by the CCCP guys on IRC. I'm trying to get the file again to see if I can recreate these problems but seriously it seems as if you're one of the few that has had any major issues. You could also hold out for a while longer as I know there are more subs coming for the movie but as before I'd suggest trying to get that file playing without these issues cropping up.

edit:

genuine lol at the "Im a gay Light" :)

Haha, that's genius!

but haven't we had this conversation before...

I've been catching up on Death note the last couple of days (I stopped when Toriyama's World stopped subbing it to wait for a regular group to do it again), and I find it really weird to watch now. Whenever I hear Light speak, I just think of him as Tamaki from Ouran or Riku from Tokimeki Memorial and now I think of Misa as Haruhi Suzumiya. Not that I should complain, they both do an ace job!
I couldn't believe when I read that so I had to go check and I was bloody stunned to find it is the same guy. I didn't get the link at all! I've even been sitting here for the past day talking to a friend on msn about all the links of people I've spotted in the anime we've both seen.

You're right about Misa though; can't think of her as anyone but Haruhi. :)

Hmm, I think I might watch ouran again soon!

Thanks very much for the advice! I find that weird about the soft sub file types though! I always find that the subs on .ass files are bigger and more pixellated than .srt files. Unfortunatley I'm on a mac, and as far as I know, VLC is the best player available for most XviD and h264 encoded stuff, although yeah, I've had problems with overlapping speech and strangely formatted text which appears like this:

This is a sub which you should

read

if you'd like to know what we're saying

I think I'll just hold out for better subs or cross gingers and toes for a DVD release, but thanks anyway :)

Yarr, I know someone mentioned the Light connection before but at that point I hadn't seen Ouran yet 8) Plus I gave the names of 2 more Ouran appearances so there. :)

Watched Dennou Coil 2 today and I'm already loving it even now. Just filled with charm and interesting things.

If you're having trouble with using vlc for something, you may wish to have a look at alternate players which i find sometimes helps. Grabbing the cccp codec pack and using either Media Player Classic or Core media player usually plays most things for me that way.

Ahh... well, I caught the kyouya actor too! :(

In a similar vein, I was quite excited by the Kyouya/Suou reunion in Death Note. :)

I thought I recognised a voice, thanks for placing it, didn't realise it was Haruhi at all!

I liked Dennou Coil 1, I'm waiting for the soft sub for episode 2 though, because Ureshii's hard sub wouldn't play last time.

After some experimentation with the file I've managed to get some of the stuff you were talking about such as stuff like {***} appearing in the subs and that was using VLC. Playing the same bit through on my normal setup, CCCP + Media Player Classic, and there's no problems. So definitely looks like a problem with VLC. I didn't realize you were on a mac (me and my stupid assumptions) but I hear that mplayer is a good alternative and has good softsub support.

So I suppose you could give that a shot and see if it works better for you. Hope that helps

Claymore 8 is superb.

Wasn't it just!

Can't say it exactly went as I'd hoped it would, but all the same, to borrow a phrase, I'm lovin' it!

Except now that I'm finally up to date with Claymore I've got to wait ages for the next episode  .

I've watched the latest Darker Than Black, a nice little bit of comedy to help the story move along, and I've got the latest Hayate No Gotoku sitting on my HD. Also awaiting FB subs for Nodame Cantabile and Doremi subs for Sola.

I'm basically waiting for specific subbing groups as an excuse not to download/watch 'em. Reason one, to stop me from watching everything available immediately; Reason two, leaves more time for revision which I really need to do to go to university :) ;;.

Ah well, I'll be able to go all-out in a month's time!

It's like a total reversal from me; I'm downloading everything and watching it imeediately to stop me studying for my exams to get out of university.

That ends this week since my first exam's on monday though... Ah well, 2 weeks then I'm free again.

For future reference, Lunar's subs for sola are well on par with doremi's so don't feel you need to wait for them.

Edit: Just thought I'd say, I haven't enjoyed an anime season this much in ages. So much good stuff. :)

You devil!

Well, I hear university's well worth it once you get there, while 'real-life' requires jobs 'n stuff :D .

I think this is the first time I've ever paid any attention to a 'season' of anime before, and it's definitely looking good! Is there anything big I'm missing out in your opinion, I'm following:

Hayate No Gotoku

Lucky Star

Darker Than Black

Sola

Nodame Cantabile

Claymore

Not to say I'd necessarily pick up anything recommended, just wondering what else is awesome from this season's stuff.

Hmm, I'd say you're only missing out on 2/3 series really: Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann which is a fantastic comedy mech-series and Dennou Coil which is a series looking at a group of children living in a city of technlogical advances. There's also Bokurano but since I know you hate scary stuff, I wouldn't really recommend it to you. It's a rather disturbing look on what really happens when you give a group of teenagers control of a giant robot.

All the other series are quite reasonable as well but the stuff you've got is basically the cream of the crop.

I remember seeing a trailer for that, the drill-mech-boy one, maybe I'll get round to that.

As for Dennou Coil, its genre is ominously left blank on the AniDB entry... I'll probably wait for a bit more anecdotal evidence before proceeding with that one.

Bokurano sounds like a Battle Royale of sorts. Maybe I'll watch that one from under the covers :D .

Hmmm.

Only two episodes subbed so far eh?

Maybe I will give this a spin. I've done a lot of revision today... I can justify it... the other series aren't being subbed by my gr...

...oh, who am I kidding, it just sounds cool from what you've all said  .

Off to pick a fansub group! TV-Japan, Ureshii or Lunar...

I've have good experiences with the latter, but they've only subbed one episode, hmm...

EDIT: TV-Japan are a Japanese release group xD, I guess that narrows down the field to two ;P.

usually, but the hard sub for dennou coil uses COMIC SANS as the font! MY EYES! Sola 8 is out.. can't wait to see what happens! Also, I downloaded the four claymore episodes I've missed... will watch up soon...

Doremi subs have still only managed ep.6 of Sola :wub: . You're in for a treat with the latest eps of Claymore, it gets good!

Also, I just watched the latest episode of Hayate No Gotoku... there's definitely some wrongness going around there.

When I give myself some free time It'll be onto Dennou Coil. And sounds like I dodged a veritable bullet by avoiding the Lunar subs, comic sans eh? Fortunately I chose to download the Ureshii subs in the end.

They use the same font for most of their shows it seems, having just looked at my ep 8 of sola (must catch up with that series sometime soon).

Personally I think Ureshii's is quite good. It seems like they've put a lot of effort in to Dennou Coil and they're usually okay with other shows. I rate them about the same as Lunar anyway (whatever that's worth).

That font is Marker Felt, which I think is actually quite a good font for subs, easy to read, doesn't look too shabby. I think Lunar are usually pretty good. Haven't checked out the Ureshii Dennou Coil yet, but I will when episode 2 comes out I think (unless I've unwittingly missed it already!)

But yeah, things get really interesting in Sola 7 & 8, I think it's my most anticipated series at the moment.

Ureshii released episode 2 three days ago, go get!

I'm still at ep.6 of Sola when I run out of Dennou Coil I'm so giving up on Doremi's subs if they haven't even reached 7 by then...
