I'm going to take a stab in the dark and suggest... GTO.

If it isn't, then it should be*

*unless we're counting loose conversions, in which case the Patlabor movies win hard.

Meh, What's the best manga-to-anime transition you've seen? Don't say there aren't any.

Best I've seen? GTO, without a doubt, despite that stupid ending. If that show had kept going... god, it would've been the best thing ever.

GTO was a good conversion up until the point where they murdered it by having a rubbish tacked on ending. If we're looking at it that way, Fruits Basket probably falls under the same banner.

Wahey for Fruits Basket too!

o/\o for all the GTO love. Such a great series.

GTO? An abbreviation for...

...right?

Yup.

GTO/Fruits Basket get my vote as awesome anime which came from manga (not having read the mangas as such, but the series were great :().

Excellent, glad my mad-meh-stalking-skills finally paid off ;)

It is rather good, yes.

Actually, I'd personally consider Planetes as a potential candidate, though it falls under 'loose adaptation', like Patlabor. Also worth noting is the fact that, unlike Patlabor, the manga of Planetes is just as brilliant as the show (whereas the Patlabor manga is simply 'good'. It's the Oshii touch: Urusei Yatsura films (well, the second one): amazing. Manga: alright. GITS film: amazing. Manga: average. Patlabor films (particularly 2): incredible. Manga: good. Imagine what he could do with a great manga...)

What I don't really mind are shows that from the start do things differently from the manga but take the best bits from it.

Stand Alone Complex, for example. Very loosely based on the manga, but god it's brilliant. Then they had to go and ruin it with 2nd GIG, like. What a bag of shit THAT was.

I've got the 2nd GIG on my hardrive and was meaning to watch it when I had the time based on my experience with the first one ... .

Also, someone better be watching Sola, the latest ep. was pretty interesting ^__^. Off to watch Lucky Star and Hayate No Gotoku when I get a moment...

Definitely. Great show. Worth the £30 for the proper 7 disc boxset.

I was looking forward to watching this soon  .

Nah, S.A.C's a crock of shit. But then, I don't like Twelve Kingdoms either, so I'm clearly generally wrong where action series* are concerned.

*if anyone tries to argue that S.A.C is not an action series I will laugh in their face.

Hey, Full Metal Panic is indeed very good. Weirds me out how it's so deadly serious one second and complete jokes the next though. But I like that. Keeps things fresh.

Can't believe I missed this first thread-skim round (must've been too intent on the GTO love).

o/\o for FMP!

Ive been looking at buying 1st Gig from Ebay. Full series is only £15 (yes I know its a pirate). Is it worth watching then?

Yeah, it's great. Bit slow at times, but there's some awesome episodes, especially near the end.

The thing with 2nd gig is that it's just not interesting. The main storyline is very dull, and for some reason it all looks very grey. Then there's Kusanagi offering to shag some kid that looks about 12...

I am. I thought the last episode was a bit... meh? Well, a bit drawn out. I'm enjoying the series though. Waiting for afk lucky star 4, but the last hayate was great, as per usual...

Well, I can usually appreciate character development in lieu of plot progression, so I found this Sola okay ;) .

Now I'm looking forward to Hayate even more, and yet I need to work . I'll lament and work 'twixt the same breath, here but for the grace of God go I:

To work, or not to work - that is the question:

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The work and revision of outrageous fortune

Or to take notes against a sea of exams,

And by opposing pass them?

The whole thing  ?

Blimey, I got about five episodes in and moved onto something I could understand easier...

Yup, all of it. There are a couple of later episodes that are quite gripping.

What really bugged me though, was the way it started off with Chisa killing herself and then branches off into all kinds of weirdness. I was expecting a story about how a dead girl could communicate via email but instead that just got the ball rolling and things soon went weird.

Don't wanna spoil anything in case you give it another chance.

I don't really know how to describe how things are explained other than

it's done with a few fairly long dialogues between main characters, similar to the way a flashback at the end of a film is a bit crap.

There's more that perplexes me but it's probably further on than you got.

Watched the latest Hayate, ditto your remarks  . Special lols go to the other butlers, I wonder how Hayate measures up...

Hmm, maybe I'll try it again when I have absolutely acres of free time and not much to watch...

Must get past episode 8 in Lain. Got about 10 minutes in then sort of gave up. I sorta enjoyed it despite it being a headfuck.

Other than that, I can't believe I'm enjoying an anime about classical music. I would have sworn I would have thought it was rubbish when I watched it but somehow I'm hooked. At this rate, i'll end up downloading that damn series about bread. And the new one about cycling

Nodame Cantabile. It's kind of like Honey & Clover but set in a music school rather than the art stuff from H&C. Very good stuff IMO. I'd recommend to anyone who wants something new to watch if only for them to check out a few episodes of it. It's one of the few shows I have to see as soon as it's out subbed and at the risk of hyping it too much I'll just stop now.

Also concur on Yakitate Japan. It's one of the first few shows I started watching when I first got into this subbed anime malarky at a time when I thought that only the shows like naruto/bleach would interest me but I found it to be great. Unfortunately the subs weren't too regular at the time so my viewing experience was kind of staggered as a result. I thought it was hilarious and that the first half/two thirds of it was very good stuff but the latter stages of the show I found to be disappointing in comparison (perhaps a result of waiting a few weeks or more per episode). One of my favourite comedy animes alongside the likes of Fumoffu and School Rumble. I'd agree it doesn't sound very interesting but give it a try. If you haven't laughed out loud once by the 5th episode I'd say perhaps the series might not do it for you. It was around that point that I got hooked.

I completely concur. The ending was quite rushed, even though the final arc was cut from 25 to 9 locations (as its easier for tv). It could have done with a double episode for the end for a proper epilogue
