So revised impressions with the subs of Lucky Star. Slightly less disappointed and I even enjoyed parts of that episode. My favourite bit would probably be the Lucky Channel at the end. A bit more optimistic about the series after that.

Rejoice patient people for I bring you the first episode of Lucky Star as subbed by a.f.k. Enjoy!

I knew I shouldn't have gone to bed early last night! at least the upstairs neighbours woke me up earlier than usual today... ;) cheers, as usual, Mr. Jeff!

I hope you don't mind if I trouble you lot for recommendations again? I've watched School Rumble and most of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suziyama now and just wondered if there's anything out there, not necessarily in any particular genre, but makes you smile on the inside in the same way, if you know what I mean? Clearly there's not going to be much that can measure up but maybe there's something I've overlooked and I'd hate to miss out having initially dismissed both SR and TMoHS as "not my kinda thing" after not getting on with Azumanga Daioh.

And is Full Metal Panic worth bothering with if I won't get most of the references?

Erm, I ended up quite attached to the charcaters of Paradise Kiss and Ouran High School Host Club, but they're both really camp animes, so they're probably not everyone's idea of a good time...

References? I don't think Full Metal Panic! was filled with references if I remember correctly.... .

I'd put up another vote for Ouran High School Host Club, quite entertaining and will hopefully make you smile. You know there's a second season of School Rumble if you really feel attached to the characters y'know ;) .

This thread is nearly 3 years old now.

I second the Planetes recommendation. Anyone seen Moonlight Mile? Apparently it's a similar type of show to Planetes or set in space at least.

Bokurano episode 1 was a pretty good. Similar to the manga yet managing to flesh out the characters more before the shit goes down. Disappointed that they are saving the introduction of Dung Beetle till the next episode though.

Hmm, first episode of Lucky Star wasn't that amazing. The OP and the "Lucky Channel" were the highlights. It seems to linger on scenes for ages at times and then jump between them rather quickly, reminiscient of a manga actually :D . I would've liked a bit more character introduction than we were presented with too, unless they expect you to have read the manga already.

It's definitely more in the vein of Azumanga than TMOHS, which I hope means it'll improve over time as you get to know the characters better.

I thought it was pretty decent, pretty much what I was expecting. Made me openly chuckle a couple of times too, but I agree, it could have done with more character introduction.

Finished Fumoffu today, which I thought was superb! I'm considering watching second raid since it's by Kyoto as well. I know it goes back to the 'proper' storyline, but I've had a look at wikipedia, and it's only a short series... what's the general verdict on it?

Oh, and anybody watched Sola?

They don't give you any character introduction in the manga either matey. Straight into the story almost exactly as the anime. :D Besides, it's not that hard to pick up what each of the 4 main characters are called and what their personalities are like is it? :D

I did. Looks quite good I thought. Reminds me a lot of Kanon in that it's one guy and the events that happens between him and various girls. I'm having an inkling about the girl with the beret already.

Also had a watch of Romeo x Juliet and as the name it implies it seems to be an anime take on the story of the shakespeare play. (I can't comment since I've not read it). Surprisingly enough, I like it. The way it's set makes it relatively easy to understand the actual plot rather than having to concern yourself with ye olde english.

Pretty much what Hackign said. More character development and action, less comedy. I loved the characters themselves so I rather enjoyed it, but if you didn't like FMP! so much then maybe you should think about it. That said Kyoto Animation didn't make FMP!, just Fumoffu and The Second Raid, so there's still a link there.

I guess it's not that hard to work out their personalities per se... but I didn't manage to figure out if the 'other' sister was older or younger, or by how much :D . I also can't remember their names at all, but maybe that's just me :D .

I hadn't looked into Romeo x Juliet, if you still think it's good after you've gone a few more eps into it I'll think about giving it a watch, I just don't want to subscribe to too many of the new animes, Hayate No Gotoku, Lucky Star and Darker Than Black already 8) . Is there much/any deviation from the basic plot? Because I'm normally more interested in stories as they unfold, as opposed to already knowing what happens/how it ends etc.

Yeah, Kyoto's the main reason I'm considering it, after Fumoffu, just because I'd like to know what happens to the characters. (p.s. Did anyone else notice that Koizumi's attacks in the Cave Cricket episode of Haruhi Suzumiya were called 'fumoffu' and 'second raid'?) I probably will watch it, just not right away.

I think I'll start watching Sola some time after Kanon and Air then!

I've been toying with the idea of watching Romeo X Juliet, but, like Bibly, I'm already watching a loooot of stuff at the moment! Actually, I'm kind of interested in Lovely Complex as well, but no-one's subbed that yet. And I'm checking out Nagasarete Airantou, it's supposed to be superb!

Err I don't really know much of the plot of Romeo and Juliet beyond the lines of "Romeo, romeo, wherefor art thou Romeo?" and that they liked each other a lot. :D

I think it'll obviously having the same basic plot-line as the play but with more of a human element to it than what you'd get from reading the original. It has more of a fantasy setting though being set on a flying island and having pegasuses(pegasi?) instead of horses so in all it's more the story retold in an anime way. You could always try the first ep only to get a feel for it? I mean, it's only 1 episode. 8)

Don't know why you're complaining about too many series. I have Bokurano, Claymore, Darker than Black, El Cazador, Hayate no Gotoku, Heroic Age, Hitohira, Idolmaster Xenoglossia, Lucky Star, Nagasrete Airantou, Seirei no Morbito, Sola, Touka Gettan and Romeo x Juliet all listed as a "will watch the second episode newt week" status. I think I'm possibly the easiest person to please with anime... :D

You uncultured swines *Shakes fist*

Anyhoo, I have to put forward a strong reccomendation for Romeo x Juliet, the bare bones plot is the same, but the characters are given the freedom to be fleshed out alot more than in the original and the art is absolutly sublime.

I can't wait to see how they handle Act 3 Scene 1 though :3

Can someone (Bibly probably :() remind me who made the first FMP series? Was it Gonzo? I didn't even realise at first when I watched Fumoffu that they had even changed (few animes change company after all - only Rurouni Kenshin springs to mind iirc)

Yeah, it was Gonzo.

Nagasarete Airantou had a pretty funny first episode - a boy from modern day japan gets shipwrecked and ends up on an island which is stuck in the feudal japan era. The twist is that the island is populated only by women, ninja-like women at that! The first episode was a pretty decent introduction to the premise, I'll be interested to see how the regular series pans out. It's adapted from a manga that was serialised in Square-Enix magazine.

Oh, I got the idea that FMP was basically a satire on the mecha stuff for some reason. Tried season 2 of School Rumble up to when whatever group it was stopped the fansubs but it seemed to lack direction and the relentless wit of the first series. I'll try the various suggestions though so thanks a bundle everyone

News to me if it was satire of the mecha series  . Plenty of people didn't like the second season of School Rumble as much, it definitely doesn't have as much critical acclaim.

Oh, and Dandy_Sephy, imp's answered your question, Gonzo made the original FMP!.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya on PAL DVD, 29th of May!

Special edition too!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Melancholy-Haruhi-...3362&sr=8-2

best news ever if this isn't just amazon dicking around!

I wouldn't get too excited. Firstly they give a US rating, it's published by Bandai (who don't have a official uk presence - or the last I checked at least)) and the BBFC site doesn't have any mention of it (which is odd considering its out in 5 weeks and should be rated by now). The 29th of May is a Tuesday not a monday (Tuesday being the release date of US dvds) and how many uk discs get special editions with art boxes for a first print? It looks like they have made a typo regarding the pal status and are selling the R1 (which sounds right to me)

You made me search Animeondvd (which i've not visted for at least a year, if not 2!), and all the info fits the us release details there. Sorry to burst the bubble ;)

The special limited edition comes with a custom series artbox, a Haruhi~ism iron-on, a double-sided pencil board, a Haruhi Cosplay Ribbon/Headband, and the Hare Hare Yukai CD Soundtrack.

That artbox looks like its a proper 6 sided box, with a drawer for the goodies o.O

There'll probably be a TMoHS Complete Collection for the U.K in the future. It would be great if the company that licenses TMoHS here would do the same for U.K anime fans as they're doing for the U.S.

Here's a Haruhi AMV for those that are looking forward to its eventual release:

http://www.japanator.com/fun-friday-amv-41307-skittles-amv

(Yeah, I know. This is the Anime thread, not an AMV thread but the creator of this AMV did some great work so it's a link worth posting.)

I hope they do the special edition for R2 releases(which granted, will take about another year or 2 the way we get releases  ). Something that nice would definitely be worth the price paid for it. Not like the usual "3 episodes per disc, no extras, 20 quid per installment for the next 50 discs".

Just thought I'd bring to everyone's attention the fact that Darker Than Black ep.2, Lucky Star ep.2, and Hayate No Gotoku ep.3 have all been subbed and are 'out there'.

I've watched the second episode of Darker Than Black and I'm definitely liking what I'm seeing.

The switch from innocuous student to cold-hearted contractor really is delightful to watch, although not entirely unanticipated.

Yep, Darker than Black is looking to be something mighty fine. I wonder what Li's(can't remember his real name) price for being a contractor is?

Maybe it's having to eat a lot like he was doing in the restaurant?

Also really enjoying where sola is heading as well. It reminds me so much of Kanon but in a good way. Hopefully it continues on with it's interesting story.

Second ep of Lucky star to watch now.

Hmm, i've been waiting for the MaiWaifu release of DTB because the first one was HD, and the afk release of lucky star because I think the group are pretty good... I can't find any information on MaiWaifu anywhere though.

I'm downloading the Hayate no Gotoku episode now though! :)
