Hehe, I'm with you on Hirano Aya :( It seems the studios are as well considering the masses of new anime she's in.

I was laughing at the other parodies in Hayate as well. Wonder if they'll have one in every episode. ^_^ As for Darker than Black, it seems a really interesting series. Reminds me a bit of Big O. The animation is top notch as well.

I'm just as glad they didn't really. I can't see how they'd get a completely new set of characters with different personalities to work in it without them being compared to the first series.

Yeah, the Hayate parodies/mentions are pretty great, the one piece reference and the EVA (semi) reprise made me laugh a lot. Still not gotten round to Darker than Black, I've watched a LOT of FMP today! In fact, I've just plain watched a lot of anime today.. this is what happens when the libraries are closed and I have to revise...

I'm finding there arequite a few similarities to EVA in FMP, especially in the Behemoth arc,

well, mainly the idea of 'special kids' and the behemoth itself. But also the relationship between the behemoth pilot and his big sister, which reminded me a lot of the Gendo/Shinji dynamic. I'm still undecided on which character I like more though with regards to the tessa/kana question

I'm another one for the ChidoriXSousuke pairing and personally I do hope there is some closure on whoever he ends up (providing he does that is).

As for Lucky Star, the reception so far to the first episode has not been too good. I watched it raw and really if you're expecting animation and general prettiness on the level of some of their other shows I would tone down those expectations. Barring the OP and maybe one or two scenes in the show (the one right after the OP really), the animation and general presentation (i.e. stuff like the background art and so on) is functional rather than spectacular. I didn't really understand that much of what was said but I'd say it was a tad disappointing. Perhaps it becomes awesome and funny with full knowledge of what they are saying so I'll reserve full judgement on it until the subs are out. It does seem similar to Azumanga in some respects and I didn't get on with some episodes of that whereas I found others hilarious. Perhaps this is just one of the weaker episodes for this show, plus I hear things become better in later volumes of the Lucky Star manga so perhaps that will be mirrored in the anime if/when they get round to animating it.

I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt because I have loved their previous stuff, so I will definitely give the series a fair go. It certainly falls into the category of stuff I usually like e.g. slice of life/comedy. May well be the first series from them that I don't love straight off the bat, though I must admit the circumstances are very different what with me watching the first episode without subs. Something I probably wouldn't have contemplated a couple of years back.

Oh well... I didn't mean to put a dampener on things. I guess don't expect the next haruhi(not that I did mind you, but reading around the blogs that's what some people expected and some were crushed to say the least...) and you should be fine.

I can see why people have been getting disappointed if they're treating it like it's going to be Haruhi all over again. I gave in earlier today and picked up and read the first 4 chapters of the manga(since that's all i could find :( ) and it reminds me more Azumanga than Haruhi like you said. What I did read I enjoyed though so I'm looking forward to it. Even if it's disappointing, at least I can pick up the words for the opening theme. ^_^

I've picked up a similar sentiment from a couple of blogs, and a few comparisons to Azumanga as well. I find that the comedy in those sort of shows comes from familiarity with the characters and a fuller understanding of the 'premise', since the comedy is pretty slow burning... well, it took me 3 or 4 episodes to start fully appreciating Azumanga, so I'm hoping if I don't 'get' lucky star straight away, I will after a few of them...

Curse you and my mega-slow torrents, haven't seen ep. 2 of Hayate OR Darker Than Black yet :( . And looks like my ports won't open for love nor money.

As for the dampner on Lucky Star, hopefully it'll look up once we start understanding the dialogue. I mean I could watch that series so I could see that OP over and over and over again... the ED looks pretty boring though :(.

Oh, and Tessa> Chidori, a vote for Chidori is a vote for domestic abuse, most of it uncalled for :( !

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I'm hoping that's what happens with Lucky Star, and it's also one of the reasons why I'm always hesitant to drop shows after a disappointing first episode or two.

And Mr. Jeff, if you enjoyed the manga I think you'll probably like what you see from the show. The general trend I've noticed is that those who appreciate the manga have found the anime to be a worthy adaptation. I haven't checked it out for myself so I couldn't say personally.

Well, the first episode of Lucky Star is out so you can all see how you like it. No words to the opening song unfortunately since the group didn't have time for it.

Also, kicking around is the first episode of Seirei no Moribito.

Edit: If someone could let me know whether it's allowed to put links up or not I'd appreciate it. ^_^

Brilliant, thanks very much!

Xei, can we EVER meet up at a con? How many times have we missed each other now?

I am trying so hard to get excited about Amecon but it doesn't seem to be happening. I just know I am going to want to kill the people there!

Still...should be a laugh!

Oh gawd, sorry, I've been pretty much away from the internet for the past week. But...

YES! We definatly have to, we keep missing each other at the cons and such, even though I have seen you walking by every now and then. I'm just looking forward to it as a nice weekend break at the moment. Not really fussed about the anime community barr the glasgow bunch at the moment. Making sure I have some good friends up there for when I make the big move come september.

Speaking of which, I claimed my parents sofa after they mentioned they were getting a new one soon, RESULT!

And of course you'll want to kill some of the people, it's a con for crying out loud! ^^;;;

Oh, and Tessa> Chidori

o/\o

Although if Souske was thinking properly he'd be trying to get both of them... :(

That's an idea for a killer episode right there :( . Of course, Kurz is directing him and got him into in the first place.

Anyone heading to the London Expo next month? Anyone been previously?

http://www.londonexpo.com/

Japanex arrives in July also at Excel.

All you Naruto cosplayers in Manchester and London might want to free up your calenders on Monday May 21st for a party

with prizes to be won.

There are some pretty good cosplayers out there (Note: Opinions will vary greatly).

There are also many bad ones but as this thread is mostly positive, The link above'll do.

(Above link is a one-off. Don't mean to turn this into a cosplay thread. I'll let someone else start that one.)

Just watched the second episode of Hayate no Gotoku, good stuff!

I'm still awaiting the A.f.k. sub of Lucky Star though as I've heard some rather negative things about the release from SleepingForest-Sub... why won't they hurry up ;).

Wait for AFK as the current sub sucks.

Seirei no Moribito posted here earlier looks to be good, might well follow the series!

Me too... ;) I have the S-F sub, and yeah, I can't watch it because the encoding is bad or something.

Have you watched the first ep of Darker than Black yet? I thought it was really interesting, and the animation was superb, as pointed out. Excellent quality sub Mr. Jeff posted as well.

I just watched the second episode of Claymore, I'm still not impressed, I'll give it another couple of chances though...

Finished FMP, and I wasn't particularly fond of it.

I'm halfway through Fumoffu though, and really enjoying it. I think I'm going to watch Kanon (2006) next. Man, I've been watching a lot of anime lately.

2 more series if you're interested have also been subbed:

Sola has all the makings of something like Kanon where it's 1 male character and a number of female ones but from what I've seen there's also something else involved.

Bokurano, I've not seen yet but I was impressed by what I saw in the promo and from what I can tell seems to be an Eva style plot with a bunch of kids piloting mechs? to save the world or something. Not entirely clear on it. ;) Heard good things about the manga though.

What didn't you like out of the original FMP out of interest imp?

Edit:After seeing the first episode, bokurano seems fairly like what I described. Interesting though.

What didn't you like out of the original FMP out of interest imp?

Um, well, first I'll say what I did like, I really liked the central characters, I thought they were all interesting and funny, and I thought this made for good comedy in the non-combat parts of the show. Except Gauron, I didn't like him as a villain, I didn't really understand his motivation, especially in the final arc of the show. Some of the plotlines were quite interessting too, I think I enjoyed the behemoth arc the most, up until the finale.

My biggest gripe is probably with the mech combat, which I found totally underwhelming. I'm not really into mech stuff, the only other mecha anime I've watched is EVA, so I don't have much material for comparison, but I found the actual combat to be quite static, and a bit random. It felt like the 'good guys' could stand around and not get shot (with the exception of the american pilots), but the bad guys were instantly blown up, unless they were a named character. Maybe I just didn't 'get it', but the whole lamda thing confused me,

I don't understand why sousuke didn't just use it all the time and deflect bullets etc, instead of only saving it for confrontations with Gauron. I mean, he could have easily used it to take out Zaied... I also don't understand why neither Gauron nor Sousuke used the Lamda driver in their final battle.

Anyway, I didn't really like the aesthetic design of the mechs, but as I say, I'm not really a mech person. The main problem was that I felt the mech stuff far outweighed the comedy and character development sections. I thought there was probably enough charcater development for Sousuke, but I would have liked more for the others.

Other than that, I vehemently disliked the music...

I think the show's pretty decent, it's just not really what I'm into. oh, and I'm totally in the tessaXsousuke camp!

cheers for the links though, I'll probably check them out tomorrow!

That's a central subplot in The Second Raid.

I would have watched the first ep. except nothing I've got will play the .mkv file I got from the Mai-Waifu subs... I've dled the CCCP from the Matroska website, and tried VLC and WMP Classic, nothing works ;) ...

Shame you didn't enjoy FMP!, but at least you're having fun with Fumoffu ^__^.

As for Kanon... it was nice, but didn't really live up to my expectations (AIR tbh) when I watched it, but not bad nevertheless.

Have you got the latest version of VLC? That's what I used to play the MaiWaifu sub of DTB, it's version 8.5 if that helps.

I've not watched air, I'll probably give that a go soon enough, at the rate I'm going at the moment. ;)

I liked Air although it was probably too short to full contain what the arse was going on in it. I think it had a bit more emotional punch in it than Kanon did but I gotta say I prefer the characters from Kanon. Worth a look definitely. ;)

I don't know how I'm going to last this season though; I currently have 13 series that I'll be downloading every week with luck and they've still not subbed everything that's new out in japan. Still another 5 series at least I'm interested in. ;)

Hmm, thanks I'll look into it. Perhaps it's better to watch Kanon and then AIR, it'll be less of a disappointment then ;).

More emotional punch > Characters for me at least. Also, I tend to find that things have more of an emotional impact when I relate to the characters more, so I probably related quite a lot to those AIR ones... *sniffles*.

I get all of my episodes from Tokyotosho. I'm rather persistent so I tend to keep the page open and refresh it every so often to see if there's any new releases around. :D

Favourited, looks like a useful site to have ;).

Oh, and the first episode of Darker Than Black looked quite nice... next it'll be Lucky Star! So much anime to get through
