Nadesico is ridiculously overrated.

Perhaps, but I don't know of any better mecha comedies. Ignoring my irrational love for the Patlabor TV series, of course.

That being said, I've not watched Dai Guard, about which I've heard good things. Must get around to watching it someday!

And if you were to want comedy mecha (with some romance, I s'pose), you could go far better than FMP. Martian Successor Nadesico, for example.

Um. And there's a hell of a lot of good anime without mecha in (just don't tell Cacky!). See the rest of this thread for far too many examples. But, if you want a better headfuck series than Evangelion, you can't go wrong with Serial Experiments Lain.

Nadesico's good, but not for for anime n00bs. You need to have seen a bit of anime to get all the parody.

I wouldn't as they are all confusing and not good.

Download the first lot of Naruto and Bleach episodes.

I want to buy the stuff on DVD, can't be bothered downloading. There are a couple of Naruto sets out that are quite cheap, maybe I'll try them... but there are over 300 episodes aren't there?

Yes, and not all of naruto is good. The first 130ish eps should be though...

If I was you I'd plump for some cowboy bebop or samurai champloo in that case, they're a bit more mature than naruto/bleach.

Akira is well worth watching, but pretty confusing, intially at least.

Be careful with anime DVDs, sometimes they don't have the original sound only the dub.

Oh, and for stuff like One Piece the western version is a hacked up mess, so you really need to download fansubbed versions of everything..

I remember seeing the chobits box set on amazon for something £40 which isn't too bad for 26 part series really. Considerably better than paying 15-20 per 3 episodes like most series force you to do. Not sure if it's your thing or not but y'know, just thought I'd mention it.

You didn't by chance watch along with NGE when it was showing on sci-fi's saturday morning japan orientated programme did you? Saiko something or other? Cause I remember that's how I got started back into anime again. Well that and watching gundam wing and tenchi on cartoon network.

Saiko-Exciting!

Yeah, that's where I watched Eva/Nadesico as well. Except I stopped watching Nadesico when, half way through one of the later episodes, I realised that I didn't actually like it. Plus I hated the character designs.

I've been meaning to watch this for a while, but I can't seem to find torrent of the first series. Help!

When in doubt check Boxtorrents. They usually have batches of most complete series'. Of course they don't have everything since I believe they take down stuff that's licensed by certain companies. However I've checked and there's a couple of torrents on there. From what I can tell the whole series is available including OSTs. You'll probably need to register though

I guess I was lucky to watch Nadesico relatively late into my anime-watching.

Mmm, saucer eyes. Not much of a fan of Gatekeepers either I take it (which would be fair enough, as it's pish)... or did you mean the personalities?

Incidentally, Another Century's Episode 2 is at its most awesome when playing through the missions as Gai. The scale difference between an Aestevalis and most other mecha in the game is amusing enough, but Gai's constant exclamations never cease to amuse me.

This might just mean that I'm easily amused.

Cheers dude. I'll check it out.

Bingo :(

I was a fan of anime movies for a long time before that (Ghibli), and liked Pokemon. First saw NGE there, so bought a dodgy set from ebay to see the rest (no broadband).

Then watched Nadesico when they ran that..

Looking for some advice. I am a reasonably big anime fan looking to dip my toe in the water again after not having much time for a while. The last show I watched religiously was Ergo Proxy and I generally favour sci-fi but with emotive storylines such as NGE but am left a bit cold by Ghost in the Shell. I also enjoyed Elfen Lied a lot.

Hmm, maybe RahXephon? Mecha-style, with many similarities to NGE. Gundam Wing is quite old-school, but again mech, sci-fi with emotive storylines. I've watched some of Chobits, that's sci-fi with emotive developments... but a lot lighter than the stuff you've listed there.

If you don't mind trying something slightly different then there's a whole variety of other things, sci-fi isn't particularly my forte :( , maybe someone else will be able to help you more, I hear PlanetES is good for that sort of thing :(.

RahXephon is utter trash with some nice designs and animation.

Except episode 19.

Good god, I'll never forget that one.

Just looked at the episode list again to check up on Episode 19... Good Lord... ...that episode... powerful stuff.

And yeah, personally I preferred NGE, but RahXephon IS similar in some ways.

I had to look it up as well but when I read the synopsis I should have guessed it was that one. Great stuff.

Never did manage to finish the series but it was fairly Evangelion-ish in it's own way; semi whiny main character, older female interested in the younger male, complex techno-religion babble.

I like to think of it as Eva-lite.

Anyway; got the rest of Full Metal Panic now so I can finally finish it much to Bibly's joy. :D

What's with all the Eva hate on here anyway? I know it kind of screws up the ending - but the character development is some of the best you will ever see. There are some really powerful moments in there, all top notch directed. Whiny main character? He had quite a bit to whine about tbh, or would you prefer the generic perfectly rounded character.

Frankly, I can hardly remember FMP - but there are moments in Evangellion which will follow me to the grave.

For instance Asuka's psychological conflict with angel 15... Really great stuff.
