To give to me, so I can think about doing a Haruhi cosplay, then see sense and never do it.

I think you should try it out, take pix and post 'em here before you jump to any silly conclusions like "Never do it".

Ok, so I'm very new to anime and I'm thinking of buying the complete series of Neon Genesis Evangelion to start me off, so do I get region 1 or 2, is there any difference? R1 seems a lot cheaper but I like the tin for R2.

http://www.amazon.com/Neon-Genesis-Evangel...3039&sr=1-1

Or should I wait for this? I don't think I'd spend this much though.

Not sure about Regions, but I'll echo JohnC's sentiment about End of Evangelion.

Oh, and enjoy NGE! It's a great series, definitely one of the best, if you can 'bear' with the psychological/philosophical overtones (I enjoyed them mostly :) ).

Report back on your experiences :( !

Evangelion's average at the best.

Full Metal Panic's far better (plus it's very funny)

To be fair, they're both a bit 'meh'. Evangelion at least makes some effort to be different.

If you want headfuck mecha, I guess there's nothing better than Evangelion. It also tries to demonstrate the human condition, though it only really realises the Anno condition, which is something I hope most humans don't suffer from. That being said, it'd probably make an interesting introduction to anime.

If you want straight-up intelligent mecha, you'd want the first two Patlabor films. But then, I recommend Patlabor, always, ever.

And if you were to want comedy mecha (with some romance, I s'pose), you could go far better than FMP. Martian Successor Nadesico, for example.

Um. And there's a hell of a lot of good anime without mecha in (just don't tell Cacky!). See the rest of this thread for far too many examples. But, if you want a better headfuck series than Evangelion, you can't go wrong with Serial Experiments Lain.

You're being nice. It's crap.

You know what, I don't know why I've even decided to get NGE as my first anime series, I think it's just because it's one of the few anime series I've heard of.

What's a good introductory anime series then?

I'd say Full Metal Panic! Action/Comedy/School, but mainly the former, and there are some mechs, bit of everything and a very good series to boot. It even has a purely comedy sequel "Fumoffu" which is very highly rated.

NGE is somewhat 'heavy' as an anime, loaded with psychological and philosophical concepts in and around the action sequences. However that's not to say it isn't great (in my opinion), but there's a lot there to think about.

Lots of people like Full Metal Alchemist as an introduction *Awaits Meh's condemnation*. Despite the name similarities this has nothing whatosever to do with Full Metal Panic!

Otherwise it depends what you're looking for, there are plenty of great school/comedy anime if you want:

School Rumble, Azumanga Diaoh, Great Teacher Onizuka, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Ouran High School Host Club.

Or if you want something more 'emotional' and human there's:

AIR, Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, Fruits Basket (Although this probably falls into the above category too :)).

If you want mecha then:

NGE, RahXephon, Patlabor.

Of course genres often mix, but it really depends on your preferences :( (These lists are by no means conclusive, just what I can think up of off of the top of my head).

I'd still go with FMP! as an introductory series :(.

Evangelion got me "into" anime as it were, I still rank it as my favourite. I'd definitely recommend you watch it..as you can see, it tends to be a bit marmite for some but either way it should prove to be interesting at least. If you enjoy the series do not hesitate to buy yourself a copy of The End of Evangelion. That is all.

Is it just me, or has Death Note become a bit rubbish recently, since about episode 15...

God yeah.

It's gone downhill when light became good again after losing his death note. That and the way him and ryuzaki are almost having sex with each other is making it really dull. I liked the attack and counterattack style from nearer the start with ryuzaki and kira. Hopefully it'll pick up soon. Maybe.

Chow, we can never be friends.

But... I love you :)

I'd recommend something like Cowboy Bebop or Trigun. Trigun is IMO one of the best shows ever produced (i.e. not just the anime world), it's well written, well animated and has some of the best characters. There's a lot of depth there and something for everyone. Cowboy Bebop too is awesome for the same reasons as Trigun, but it has a slightly more serious tone overall.

The only problem you'll have with watching these two shows as your first foray into Anime is that everything else will seem quite average in comparison.

If you're looking at standalone films or 'OVAs' then I have to recommend Ninja Scroll and Macross Plus. Akira is another good one, but again it's fairly marmite. It holds a soft spot in my heart because it was the first anime I watched (excluding Castle in the Sky) but I can understand and accept why many people don't rate it as highly as others. Ghost in the Shell is another favourite for many. I'd also like to recommend Patlabor 1 and 2 (like someone else mentioned). Also, Trinity Blood is a pretty good series, but make sure you avoid the last episode, it pretty much ruins the series.

Macross Plus is a real personal favourite of mine and an anime movie that I'll never get tired of watching. It's Top Gun without the homoeroticism, with better music, no crazy Tom Cruise and giant robots beating the crap out of each other.

Thanks for the suggestion guys, I really don't know what to get now. It seems that you can't buy a lot of series in a boxset without paying ludicrous prices, it's a bit of a hassle buying the individual volumes and I like to have my series in a nice boxset rather than individual cases.

I think it'll be easier to buy some films to start with so I'm going for Akira and Ghost in a Shell and maybe Patlabor.

I was intending to get some more Studio Ghibli films but it seems the prices have jumped up massively since last time I checked.

Man, I haven't watched any death note since episode 12. I don't know why, I have all the episodes after, i just can't bring myself to watch them. I think the concept doesn't gain as much from being animated as the adventure/action shonen mangas do.

I was really enjoying Azumanga Daioh, I got up to about episode 7 before circumstances beyond my control forced me to stop...

I really want to get into a few more series but my workload's gotten quite silly since it's near the end of my academic year, and exams are coming up soon. *sigh*
