Halo is popular because not many people have played many other console FPS games and those that have, lack the strength of character NOT to jump on the "me too" bandwagon. Admittedly, there are passionately sincere individuals who do love the game but those are pretty few and far between.

Bwhahaha.

It's popular because other console FPSes (anything that's been released on the PS2 for a start) are rubbish.

In particularly they don't tend to allow (I'm going to generalise here, since individual games might do one or the other) more than 4 players to play, don't allow linkup, aren't properly optimised for a gamepad, suffer from appalling framerate drops in multiplayer mode (which is why I can't play goldeneye), don't provide the same degree of customisation of the multiplayer mode, don't contain vehicles, don't support co-op, suffer from obvious clipping/horizon issues, have AI which is even worse than the appalling Halo AI whose response to any given situation can be easily predicted, don't support DDigital 5.1, don't exhibit even Halo's degree of weapon balance (I agree about the pistol being a bit too powerful) etc. etc.

"Me too" and/or "strength of character" has nothing to do with it.

Indeed if displaying a complete disregard for others opinions is your definition of "strength of character"...

I await my flaming for being an obvious Edge-fanboy for daring to disagree with you.

Wrong again I'm afraid. Halo is popular cos we love playing it. It's really that simple.

(jumping on the 'that quote' bandwagon).

I've seen some incredible statements in my lifetime, but.....

No.

You're wrong.

You love playing it because you haven't experienced the undoubted delights of the Medal of Honour* series using the incomparable DualShock analogue sticks.

Please, everyone, keep it civil - I'd hate for anyone to get overwrought over this and end up slamming their hands down on their keyboard and storming off in sulk with real, salty tears in their eyes.

Overwrought?

Surely we jest?

Yes, the cover was shit. I kind-of liked the feature about jumping on the technical innovation bandwagon. Thought the boxouts were much more entertaining that the body copy.

Found the reviews a bit 'meh'. Only game I fancy is Transformers.

That Chernobyl game hit a nerve because I followed a Deloreoned link in OT yesterday to pics of the town.

Making of… was as good as ever. Columns were decent, but Redye was too heavyhanded and clumsy.

Not read the rest.

I quite like Halo.

This thread rules!

But not as much as Halo does.

I look forward to getting home tonight and reading my newly arrived copy of Halo Monthly... sorry, Edge and seeing what all the fuss is about.

Do you honestly believe, Cacky, and I mean honestly that all these people on here, Spritey, Uncle Clive, Kerraig, Uncle Nasty, Harlen, me etc etc are all so easily duped by Edge to cloud our judgement on a game and that we are incapable of making up our own minds? I find that assumption, which seems to be the assumption running through all your posts, quite astounding.

Edge should give the new armoured core game 10 for a laugh.

I think Ollie's brain would explode.

It was meant as a windup in part, simply because I know many people do greatly care about the game, but I do get concerned about the whole group empowerment thing via certain games (such as Halo). It undermines the enthusiasm others have for both the game in question and the medium as a whole. It's also pretty boring if everyone only talks about a few games (even though there is bucket loads of great gaming out there).

That's my individual taste, though I do play almost everything anyway (I did make a comment on the recent Katamari Damashii review in EDGE, though nobody noticed obviously). We need to see more honest individuality, rather than unwittingly endorsing the gaming equivalent of Eddy and Patsy.

Didn't you once make a similar suggestion about people who liked KOTOR? :o

Just don't bother. It's irritating.

Well, I think we're all pretty bored of talking about Halo.

Look Ollie, you know a bunch about a whole load of games that we know a lot less about than many of the people on NTSC. You've got a lot to offer a gaming forum. We are interested, honestly. So enthuse about them, only using words you actually understand, and nobody will call you a mentalist. In fact we'll listen to you respectfully, (even if we disagree), I promise. If you drop the Edge obsession (hwoever you try to disguise it) and don't try and wind us up and we'll all get along very nicely. Look on this as a Bin Laden style truce offer, or a Cacky-RLLMUK peace process, if you will.

That people fell for the hype and just liked the game because certain magazines did? Find the thread, point it out to me and I'll hold my hand up and say yes. I recall saying I don't see what people see in it, as it's broken and ugly and I still stand by that. I also think people fell for the Star Wars hype and tag that came with it as I don't think it would have fared so well had it not had these. But that's for another thread, I would imagine.

This topic just turned around and everyone's happy.

There's something wrong with that. Never would've happened in my day, ooooh no, we'd argue until at least five people were banned. Biased mods, that's what the kids need today...

Here's the thread I was thinking of: http://www.rllmukforum.com/index.php?showt...0&hl=malak&st=0

Don't want to turn this (even more) off topic or create an argument though. What you said just reminded me of how I felt reading that old thread of yours.

Aaaanyway...I also like Halo. And Edge 136 is excellent.

Why thankyou. First time I ever received such a response. Should I have prepared an acceptance speech or something?

I saw ya looking in that thread. Don't think I didn't... ;)

Did I say people were just saying they liked it because of magazine reviews?
